THE MONON WRECK.

Never before has such a terrible railroad wreck occurred near CrawfordsviUe as that one on the Monon yesterday. Accustomed to read almost daily in tho newspapers of some awful disaster our senses liuve become blunted to their horror. But yesterday's scenes brought all who witnossed them to a most keen realization of what death and suffering by the wholesale is. Hereafter newspaper accounts of such disasters cannot be passed over with indifference. They will reoall and unite comparison with the wreck of Jnnuary 11, 1892, on the Monon railroad. The occasion, too, was prolific in examples of heroic work on the part of those unhurt and not seriously injured. But we are especially proud to say that citizens of CrawfordsviUe enrne forward 'with unselfish devotion and helped bravely in rescuing and nursing. Martin's ice men no doubt saved many a life by preventing the iproad of fire, while those who carried olT the dead and bleeding are deserving of the highest praise' At tho hotels and houses men left their business and ladies their household duties to spend hours tenderly nursing the victims to life or making dsath as easy as possible. Everything possible to relieve was done and there was no sign of neglect, all of which is much to the credit of our people.

CM,. JOHN S. WILI.IAMS, formerly Third Auditor of the Treasury, is of the opinion that Senator Gorman, of Mary'and, or Governor Russell, of Massachusetts, will be the Democratic candidate for President. The tendenoy of the party seams to bo to avoid New York candidates. Cleveland could not carry that State because Hill absolutely controls the machine and the latter would be defeated the loss of numerous States outside his own.

THE Prohibitionists in Iowa, not content with tho law against liquor passed by the Republicans, have kept up their organization, voted their separate tickets, always to the detriment of the Republicans until now the Democrats have the Governor and Senate. This upper house now in session has passed a law repealing prohibition and substituting high license Tha Prohibitionists may be able to explain their actions to each other, but never to any one else.

MCNCIB is following tho example of CrawfordsviUe by investing in an electric light plant. Municipal ownership of light plants, water works and other public necessities which are almost necessarily monopolies is increasing and is approved by the best political economists.

WHILE we aro all encouraging home industries let us not forget that modest little institution known as the stone pile. The proper authorities should resurrect the one wo had here a year or so ago.

CITY HALL, CINCINNATI.

Cincinnati has recently completed a new city hall which is an extremely modern style and looks very much like a cathedral, with lofty towel's and pointed dome. It cost nearly a million dollars and is a very handsome affair.

A lUltiul of the Leal.

The clouds are dark o'er tho palace towers, Hut more dark the scowl of treason lowers. Thoy throng the hall and tho courtiers all Fly as they view each crucl dirk BarOd for treason's murderous work.

The kiiifc who dared their might to bravo Will llnd this day at their hands a grave. *Tis his last day's dawu, for his sword 1b gone They have stolen the bar from his chamber door Despair is on him and hopo is o'er. But as ho flees, a woman's faco Lights up with the fire of the Douglas race. Sho hears tho shout of tho traitor rout. And swift she bares her arm so white To give her liege lord chance for flight. Now hard against the door's stout oak Resounds tho crash of furious stroke, Till it yiolds at last, and crowding fast Tho murderers all in their murderous might Stand faco to face with tho maiden slight.

Sho stands erect let them strike as they list. As sho braves them all with her broken wrist For leal to trust, her «rm she thrust In place of tho bar to hold them at bay For love of her king on his dyiug day. For love of her king and prido of her race. Sho thrust her arm in tho iron's place Sho held tho oak till the good bar broke, Aud now ns sho stauds, let them strike as they list. For she braves them all with her broken wrist.

SELECTIONS FROM THE WRITINGS OF THE DANBURY NEWS MAN.

CovtUe Doubt, the Carpenter'* Figure* About the Shingles, and Undertakes tu Find Out for Blmielf—Be Doesn't

Make Out Very Well.

(Copyrighted by Lee & Slicpard, Boston, and published by special arrangement with tliem.) There are men who dispute what they do not understand. Mr. Coville Is Buoh a man. When he heard a carpenter say that thero were so many shingles on the roof of his house, because the roof contained so many square feet, Colville doubted the figures, and when the car penter went away he determined to test the matter by going up on the roof aud counting them. And he went up there He squeezed through the scuttle—Colvillo weighs 830—aud then sat down on the roof and worked his way carefully aud deliberately toward the gutter Whoa he got part way down he heard a sound between him and the shingles, and became aware that there was an interference some way in his further locomotion. He tried to turn over and craw) back, but the obstruction held him.

Then he tried to move along a little in hopes that tho trouble would prove bul temporary, hut an increased Bound convinced him that either a nail or a slivoi had hold of his cloth, and that if he would save any of it he must use caution His folks were in the house, but he could not make them hear, and, besides, lie didn't want to attract the attention of the neighbors. So he sat there until after dark and thought. It would have been an excellent opportunity to have counted the shingles, but he neglected to use it. His mind appeared to run in to other channels. He sat there an horn after dark, seeing no one he could notify of his position.

Then he saw two boys approach the gate from the house and, reaching there stop. It was light enough for him to *ee that one of the two was his son, and al

I

though he ohjected to having tho other boy know of his misfortune, yet he had grown tired of holding onto the roof, and concluded he could bribe the strange boy into silence. With this arrangement mapped out he took out his knife and threw it so that it would strike near to the boys and attract their attention Tt struck nearer than he anticipated in fact it struck so close as to hit the strange boy on the head and nearly brain him. As soon ns tho boy recovered his equilibrium lie turned on Coville's boy, who, he was confideut, had attempted to kill him, and introduced some astonishment and bruises into his face. Then he threw him down, and kicked him in tha side, and banged him on the head, and drew hiin over into the gutter, and pounded his legs, .and then hauled him back to the walk again, and knocked his head against the gate. And all the while the elder Coville sat on the roof and screamed for the police, but couldn't get away.

And then Airs. Coville dashed out with a broom and contributed a few novel features to tho affair at the gate, and one of the boarders dashed out with a double barreled gun, and, bearing the cries from the roof, looked up there, and, espying a figure which was undoubtedly a burglar, drove a handful of shot into its legs. With a howl of agony Coville made a plunge to dodge the missiles, freed himself from the nail, lost his hold on the roof and went sailing down the shingles with awful velocity, both legs spread out, his hair on end and his hands making desperate but fruitless efforts to savo himself. He tried to swear, but was so frightened that he lost his power of speech, and when he passed over tho edge of the roof with twenty feet of tin gutter hitched to him, the boarder gave him the contents of the other barrel and then doveinto the house to load up again.

The unfortunate Coville struck into a cherry tree and thence bounded to the ground, where he was recognized, picked up by the assembled neighbors and carried into tho house. A new doctor is making good day wages picking the shot out of his legs. The boarder has gono into the country to spend the summer, and the junior Coville, having sequestered a piece of brick in his handkerchief, is lying low for that other boy. He says that before the calm of another Sabbath rests on New England there will be another boy in Danbury who can't wear a cap.
