There has nlways been a belief that it WIIB a bail sign that the young men wore leaving the farm ami Hooking to the towns and cities.f Hut in view of the results obtained by presont day students of political economy, it should be regarded with feelings of satisfaction. It is estimated that under a system of scientific farming, toward which wo are rapidly approaching, not over one-third of the American workers will be required to till the soil. Iu fact, a larger number so engaged will engender a competition ruinous to profit.--'.' At the present timi about forty per cent, are needed to do our farming, owing to wastes caused bj lack of method. So the farmer should not grumble when he sees the young men leaving fertilo fields for crowded streets. It means one less competitor for him and one mora consumer for his products. His only core should be that these young men receive the training necessary to make them good citizens wherover they go.
Is the selection of a new fair site by tho State Board of Agriculture two members of the board were offered bribes by persons interested in the Miller farm. That farm was not chosen and tho bribes were not accepted, but the board for some unknown reason refused toexposethe men who attempted to corrupt it' When a full and free investigation of circuii'stance like this is avoided, it it pretty good evidence of an Ethiopian in the coal bin. Tlie grand jury, however, proposes to investigate.

The Bribery Scmidul,
I.NDIA.NAI'OUS, Ind., Jan. a The state board of agriculture appointed a committee to investigate the charges that II. M. LocUhart, of Do Kalb county, had been corruptly approached by persons interested iu the purchase of the Miller farm as a state fair site, and two hours later submitted a report The committee stated that Lockhart had been so approached by a "person unknown," that $1,000 had been placed in the hands of another person "unknown" and that Loekhart had kept other members of the board advised of his actions. They further found that the written agreement .between Uockhart and the briber had been burned and the money returned. While Lockhart is relieved from all blame by the committee, it is manifest that no effort was made to tind out who the briber was. and the investigation was simply a farce. The action of the board emphasizes the belief that there has been corruption in the matter and that it is anxious to hush it up. All the facts will lie brought to the attcution of the grand jury, and Lockliart will be compelled to'expose the person with whom he entered into the corrupt agreement.

The complaint al leges that twenty years ago John G. Liebrich, intending to go to Germany, bought of Mayer & Haueisen billsof exchange on a Wurtomburg house for2,950 guilders: that l.iebrich died before going and that the bills of exchange were therefore never used. The suit is for the return of tho money paid for the exchange, amounting in American currency to about 82,000. The long delay in demanding the return of the money, the complaint explains, is due to the fact that the bills of exchange were lost and forgotten and only recently discovered.

The operators did not recede from their refusal to continue the system of checking off organiztSion dues in their offices, but they agreed to hold no man accountable for his participation in the strike. What effect this action at Clinton will have on the rest of the miners of the state is problematical. but it. is claimed by the operators that it is the beginning of the end of the check-off system. Without that system in force it would be diflieult to keep up a miners' organization, so they say.

There has been 11 gun standing behind 11 cupboard in a Pine street residence for tho past right years It belonged to tho occupant's lather, and wxs set up there in a loaded cnnditiou. Its presence was always an eyesore to I lie occupant's wife, 1 who shared fully with the sex their fear I of firearms So iho other day. Friday. we think, he induced her husband to take vt down and lire it ofT. He had never fired off a gun that had been load- I ed eight years: in fact, he never fired oil a gun at all. so lie poked it out of window ami took aim into the garden, without the faintest shadow of fear. His wife bem^ afraid of firearms, stood behind his back and looked over his shoulder with her eyes shut tightly He shut his eyes, too,ami then lie pulled the trigger.
What immediately followed, neither appears to have any settled idea. He says he can vaguely remember hearing a noise of some kind, aud has an indistinct impression of passing over something which must have lxen his wife, as she was found between him and the window by the neighbors who drew liitu out of the fireplace The fact that one of his shoulders was set back about two inches, nnd that three of her teeth were imbedded in his scalp, seemed to indicate that in stepping back from the window ho had done so abruptly, an this conclusion. we are glad to say, was verified by both 011 being restored to consciousness
The laws of health are taught in the schools', but not in a way to be of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which iu many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who hud just contracted a cold, was brought before the school, so that all could hoar the dry, loud cough nnd know its significance seo the thin white coating on tho tongue and later, as the cold developed, see tho profuse watery expectoration and thin watery discharge from tho nose, not ono of thorn would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then bo given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might seo that oven a severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup.
