A smv base ball league hns been gauized anil Indianapolis is "not in it." That city will not bo in tho contest for the Democratic National convention either unless it does some lively liustli ng.
JfiHip. A. J. LEAY, the new governor of Oklahoma, is resident of that territory, very popular with the people and man of unquestioned integrity and ability. Von can bank on all of President Harrison's appointees being imp iblo and honest.

SKNATOK PKITE:: has introduced bill to inflate the currency by issuing 8100,000,000 worth of paper money to Indiana land owners in thoshap ofloans at two percent, interest. The preamble of tho bill is an arraignment of the re cent Democratic legislatures,as it sayi tho people of tho State are suffering from a hick of money, the direct result, of laws made to favorite tho rich cap italist.
Rehearing Denied.
The case of tho city of Crawfordsvillo vs. Hector S. IJraden came up in the supreme court yesterday on a motion for a rehearing. The motion was over ruled and a rehearing denied. Xr.w A MIA NY, Ind., .Ian. 8. Another lifumons, case of white capping occurred at 2 o'clock Wednesday morning in Crawford county. 4.1 miles west of. this city. A half-mile west, to the little town of English, in that county, resides rcspcctable farmer named Henry !•'. Taylor, and quarter of a mile from his home lives a woman named Miry Hawkins. was suspected that too great, an intimacy existed between Taylor and this woman, and so the virtuous Crawford county white caps determined to set a guard on the conduct of the pair. At o'clock Tuesday night half a dozen of the gang were sent to lay ill wait at Mrs. Hawkins' place, and they saw Taylor enter

door and entered. The white caps took both Taylor and Mrs. Hawkins and mounted them upon horses. Hiding half a mile away they took Taylor from the horse, tied him to a tree, and stripping off his shirt gave him sixtylive lashes on the bare lmelc with long hickory switches. The man fainted twice during the whipping. Mrs. Hawkins was compelled to stand by and witness the torture. Leaving Taylor, more dead than alive, still tied to the tree, the white caps took Mrs. llawkins to a creek near by, where they ducked her until she was so exhausted she could neither stand nor make an outcry. They then carried her to her home, where she lay
Wednesday afternoon near death's door. Taylor managed to crawl to his home, going most of the way on his hands and knees. He may die from the torture.
Miners In More Trouble.
TKRKK 11AI:TK, Ind., .Ian. S.—The bituminous miners are having more trouble with the operators. National Vice President Penna, of the miners' organization, lias notified the slate oflicers of the Miners' union who live here that in the l.int in district the operators are doing tlieii utmost to destroy the miners' organization, aud suggesting that the slate olticers take measures to combat this opposition. President Coinmisky left Thursday for the scene of the trouble and will also visit ltlacklmrn.l'ikc eounty, where the operators are reducing their employes. The operators at Dagger have refused toallow the'vheck-olV" system, which was in existence before the strike, and the millers, being helpless, resumed work in spite of the refusal. What is helping the operators is that there arc dissensions among the miners, owing to the ill-feeling toward the National Miners' union for its failure to properly relieve the strikers, as promised. The operators an utilizing this dissension among the miners. The trouble at Clinton over the "chcck-off"' system is not settled yet. and the !!00 miners are idle.
Coal Mill in Demand.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., .Ian. 8. The cold weather caused many comfortless houses oil the south side of the city. The well-to-do and working people alike suffered, as natural gas in its short supply made no distinction. Some homes hud small supplies of coal to draw on. but these were shared with the less unfortunate. Notwithstanding this there were many hundreds of places without fires. Cold breakfasts and dinners were the rule. .Several of the schools were closed, the pupils going to their homes only to find them without warmth, aud worse, if anything, than the school buildings. There was such a demand on the few coal dealers that it was impossible to get enough teams and men lo lilt orders.
