This announcement will serve to bring out other candidates, and notice is given that Mr. Brookshire must fight for a reuomination. Washington Post reporter, saiil the fol lowing of the late Thomas B. Ward •'His memory deserveB more than a passing notice. Nature had blessed him with a rich dower of all the qualities that fascinate men. In amiability of character he was the peer of tho best of earth, and all that was lovable in human nature was exemplilie.d in Tom Ward. Though an uncompromising Democrat, ho was elected Judge in a county easily controlled by the opposition, and won a seat iti Congress over that distinguished Republican, (iodlove S. Ortli, overcoming a large Republican majority by the sheer force of personal popularity. IIis ability on the bench, before a jury, and in the House of Representatives was unquestioned. No better lawyer than Ward ever lived in the Wabash region, tho bar of which would stand comparison with any in "the Union. liis great ability as an advocate was clearly shown in several intricate contested election cases during his Congressional career. But his learning was not confined to his pro fession. Ho was a superb scholar, familiar with many languages, and a more omnivorous reader never lived, actually believe ho had read nearly every book in the Congressional Library. His style of oratory was ingersollian liis speeches wore prose poems shining with epigrams and of lofty strain. Hon. Thomas A. Hendricks loved him devot edly and often spoke of his wonderful intellect. In fact, he was beloved by everybody, and many an eyo moistened and many a heart befit sadly when the news camo that Tom Ward was no

Will Go to Plainfield.

John Cox is a well known street boy who more than once has beeu detected in pilfering. His parents are very excellent people aud resido in the south end. They supposed that Johnny was a regular attendant at school, but Johnny isn't built that way. Ho played hookey every day and ran loose on the streets, getting into mischief and shady company. Yesterday John R. Robinson saw him steul a deck of fancy cards from the corner In.ok store and followed him to (ieorge Fitchey's saloon, where ihe lad sold them to barkeeper Bob Pettit. Tho police soon had little Fohnny in tho lock-up where he is still taking his chocolate and buttered toast. His mother was greatly distressed when she heard of Johnny's whereabouts and called on Officer Brothers beseeching him with many tears that this olteuse also bo excused. When, however, the nature of the Plainfield school "was explained to her she was much relieved aud consented that Johnny bo sent there for his own good. There is precious little good left in him but his relatives hope that there is enough left for seed.

The laws of health are taught in the schools but not in a way to be of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily bo done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold, was bronght before the' school, sa that all could hear tho dry, loud cough and know its significance see the thin white uting on the tongue and later, as tho

Id developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and tliin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then bo given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that ull might see that even a sovero cold could bo cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as tho first symptoms appear. This Temedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup.' llrilw Money hocked I'p.

Indianapolis, Ind., Jan. 6.—An ugly scandal lias grown out of the purchase of a new site for the state fair by the state board of agriculture. The charge is that an effort was made to bribe at least two members of the board to vote for a certain farm as a site for the state fair. As the story is currently related a person or persons interested in the sale of a certain farm to the board offered two members S500 each to vote for that farm. Tho would-be purchaser of the votes went so far as to place the .?1,U00 where it could be received by the two members of the board. After the money had been placed within reach of the members they voted for another site, and the money was never called for. This is tho SI,000 now locked up in the state board's safe. Neither the members of tho board for whom it was intended nor the would-be purchasers of votes will call for it.

A Mi*j)l u:tnl Judgment.

Some one living on tho second floor of the double tenement on Nelson street placed a pan of baked beans in a window to cool A few minutes later the horse attached to a coal cart backed in front of the place and refused to go. The driver laid on tho lash, but the animal would not move on. It winced and jumped about in the agony from tho blows, but it would not advance. A portly gentleman passing on the walk

saw the trouble and stopped. He was in sympathy with tho animal and indignant with tho man. He expostulated with him. told him to use mild means, to try suasion, that he ought to bo ashamed of himself for treating a dumb beast in that manner that if he did not relent and cease his brutal conduct a fearful judgment would overtake him.

At this juncture a little girl came to the window to see what was the matter, and she must have hit against the pan of beans, for almost immediately it slid from the window, and while the benevolent gentleman was telling tlie coal man of the judgmeut to come the pan descended bottom upward on his own devoted head, deluging him with its contents. taking his breath and knocking him down on his hands and knees. The shock was so great and so unexpected that the unfortunate man was completely bewildered, and crawled away as fast is be could, knowing not where he was going, but instinctively seeking to get Dut of danger. He was a dreadful looking spectacle when ho got up. He was beans the entire length of his pereou. They streamed down his back and legs, md the oily substance dripped from the brim of his hat, while riding securely on the crown \v:is a pound piece of pork, slotted with beans.

The driver silently watched him until he got on his feet, and then shouted at him: "If yon hadn't stuck your nose in other people's business I'd come there an help scrape you off, but now. cuss you, you can 6crape yonrself."

A woman who saw the accident invited the unhappy victim into her yard, where she helped him get off his coat, removed his hat and emptied it and gave him a shingle to scrape off his pants with, and performed other kind offices luggested by her sweet, womanly nature.

It is pleasant to see such things, to find those whose hearts are full of tender lympatliy, and whose bands turn to helpful acts.

The little girl didu't come down after Ihe pan nntil the portly gentleman had lot ont of the neighborhood.
