BEET SUGAR.

Tho beet sugar crop of Germain" last your amounted to one 1.300.000 tons that of France to 750,000 tons Hint of Austria to 730,000 tons that of Russia to 430,000 tons, and that of Belgium to 200,000—total 3.000,000 tons. Had the foolish theory that "the tariff is a tax," deteered those countries from aiding the beet sugar business it is jrobable that not a pound of beet sugar would have been made in the world today. Cannot the people of the United States learn a valuable lesson from those countries, and continue the Republican policy of attempting to develop our own sugar-producing resources, and thereby soon add three or four million tons to the world's production of sugar': We are making a good start, and who will be so foolish as to advocate an abandonment of the sugar bounty?

AMONG all the carols that have been handed down to us through the mist of years there is ono that should be nover forgotten. It was uttered near where the Sea of Galileo rolls its silent way. And it was made by Ilitn who made Christinas possible. This was what He said: "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good-will to men." There may be many Christmas carols and songs and texts, but this is the best of .hem all.

vKi- Will Have a Hard Winter. •nh.v7.ii., I mi., Dec. 26. —In spite of the fact that the strikers have given up the tig-lit and agreed to return to work the outlook for them is uot bright Some of the operators say that owing to the lonjr strike they lost many' of their contracts, and besides the mildness of the winter has greatly reduced the demand for coal. The general superintendent of one of the largest coal corporntions'iu the district said that from the present indioations the miners would do well if they worked threo days in a week. For almost three months the miners have done no work and many are three months beliiud with their rent. Those who could have been buying their provisions on credit, so that financially they are in a terrible plight To pay their debts and clothe and feed their families on three days' work a week will he an onerous task indeed. The scene in and around Urazil Friday was one of enjoyment for the first time since the strike became a settled fact One merchant said he made more sales Thursday night than he had iu the two weeks previous. In the mining hamlets the saloons did a thriving trade.

TKKIIE IIAT'TK, Ind., Deo. 00.—State President Commiskey was seen at his home and requested to give his opinion of the outlook, lie had been slightly under the weather and had not felt like considering the question carefully, he said, but from appearances he was inclined to judge that the men would be able to get to work that matters would settle down and that all would be running smoothly within a short time. Conservative estimates place the loss resulting from the strike at 51,750,000. Nearly one-half of this enormous sum comes out of the pockets of the men.

llnmniiHiil'i Mysterious Trujrodr. HAMMOND, Ind., Dec. 20.—The mutilated body of an unknown man was found lying in J. M. Bradford's store Thursday. He had been murdered. The safe in the store was open and bore the appearance of having been ransacked, perhaps by the man whose body lay on the lloor before it The body of the murdered man was found when r. Itradford came down to the store. The safe had been opened during the night and examination showed that SlSS in cash had bei'U taken. The head pf the unknown had been crushed in and the instrument of death, a hammer, lay near by covered with blood. Ko one in town who saw the body was able to identify the man, and it is the belief that he did not live in this town. There was not a scrap of paper in his pockets, nor was there any mark on his clothing to oft'er a clew as to his indentity. Tbi burglary evidently had been committed by old hands at the business and no clew whatever was left behind, unless, perhaps, there is one in the murdered body. It is the general belief that the dead man was one of the cracksmen. The supposition is that he and others of the gang quarreled over the booty secured in Bradford's store and that he was struck a terrific blow with the hammer.

Indiana a Trotting fell I nr. CincAoo, Dec. 'JO. —Illinois has more race tracks than iny state in the country. Indiana is second in point ol total number of courses for the development of equine speed, but the lloosier state is absolutely first in full mile racing tracks. Ten years age there was not a mile track in the state and it has only been during the past five years that most of them were built. They are constructed on the plans und specifications laid down by the American Trotting association, aud are,.therefore, known as regulation tracks. They are such as attract any horse, of whatever speed or value, and this accounts for the noted horses that have in recent years been seen in that state. These mile tracks are nine in number, and sire at Richmond, l'ort Wayne, Cambridge City, Terre Haute, Evansville, Elkhart, l'crn. Rushville and Columbus. The last named was finished recently, and will next season he a member of the

Indiana Trotting association. .Several other mile tracks are in course of coo struction in Indiana.
