THE annual Christmas poultry train from Canada to Boston was smaller than in previous years. It consisted of twelve •s. The value of the poultry at the frontier was 825,000. The duty ounted to S8.750. This is due to tue wage earners' tariff. Our farmers should not forget it.

EVEU since the defeat of Mills for Speaker the Indianapolis Sentinel has had a bad taste in its month. It first denounced Crisp as being the representative of everything disreputable, and now since the nomination by the President of Judge Woods as one of the new Circuit Judges its wrath is without bounds. To have the ill will of tho Sentinel is a "decoration of honor," to use the language of grassburner Bynum, and Judge Woods should feel complimented. -v

THE sudden death of Senator Phi tub, of Kansas, removes one of the conspicuous and prominent figures in tho United States Senate. He was one of tho leading Republicans of the country, and left his impress upon its legislation. He began life as a pi-inter and arose from the caBO to one of the most exalted positions in the Republic through the force of his talent and his strong individuality. Not only his State but hiB country will miss his services. Kansas, hower, is rich in material and his successor. whoever he may be, will doubtless worthily, fill tho dead Senator's place.

Distressing Accident.

A distressing accident occurred at New Ross the other day in tho family of O. M. Eddingfield, the township truftee. A pan of boiling hot water had been left for a moment on the lloor, and one of his infant twins that was just learning to walk toddled up to it. In some way the child lost its balance and fell in on its side. Although quickly rescued, the skin dropped from its 6ide and arm as it was lifted out. It hr.s suffered terribly, and its parents are greatly distressed by the sad accident.

There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of tho Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, aud unless the inflammation can bo taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that we cannot cure by taking Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.

Bok In His Literary Gossip Gives Some ID.terssting 1'igures on Ben iiur, Bok in hiB litorary gossip in the Sunday Journal describes tho literary life of Gen. Wallace to some extent and comments on the General's forthcoming novel. The following in regard to the success of "Ben-Hur" is interesting and will be news to many: "Speaking ot "Ben-Hur,'' I aui perfectly safe iu saying, I think, that no author during the past ten years has made more money out of tho sales of a single book than has Lew Wallace received as his share from the famouB Oriental tale. Only last week I saw some figures which showod authoritatively that more than 470,000 copies of the popular edition of the book had been sold up to date. Tho author, I happen to know, receives a royalty of 15 per cent, and, as the book sells for SI.50, each copy sold means to hitn 22.V ceuts. It is easy to figure out, therefore, that Lew Wallace has made considerably over 8100,000 from tliiB single book. This, too, is entirely apart from the two new holiday editions just issued. And yot few books promised so poorly at the start. The book was first published nine years ago, and failed to attract even a moderate degree of attention. Tho firet six months' royalty statement wa3 hardly gratifying to tho author. A year passed by, and the sale of the lxok was generally considered by the publishers to have reached its limit. I am violating no confidence when I say that the first year's sale of "Ben-Hur" did not reach 3,000 copies. Then something suddenly directod attention to the book. Some say that President Garfield's indorsement of the book gave it a new lease of life, while others claim it took the public a year to find out the real worth of tho story. Be that as it may, the book began to sell, first in moderate quantities, then orders came for hundreds, and soon the publishers scarcely took the plates of the book off the press. Ever since that time, for seven years, the book has kept selling steadily, and there is every indication that, with the two new editions in the market, the book will raach a round half million by the close of the year.

Inferior Goods.

The only safe way for purchasers iB to insist on having the genuine article, and not allow themselves to be swindled by having plasters Baid to be "just as good," or containg superior ingredients" imposed upon them. They are only tricks to sell inferior goods that no more compare with Allcock's Porous Plaster than copper does with gold. One trial of Allcock's Porous Plasters will convince the moBt skeptical of their merits.

The eminent Henry A. Mott, Jr.. Ph. D., F. C. S., late Government Chemist, certifies: "My investigation of Allcock's Porous Plaster shows it to contain valuable ar.d essential ingredients not found in any other plaster, and I find it to superior to and more efficient than any other plaster."

Among the thousands of testimonials of cures by Dr. Miles's New Heart Cure, is that of Nathan Allisons, a well known citizen at Glen Rock, Pa., who for years had shortness of breath, sleeplessness, pain in left side, shoulders, smothering spoils, Btc. one bottle of Dr. Miles' Now Heart Cure and one box of Nerve and Liver Pills, cured him. Peter Jaquet, Salem, N. J., is another witness. For twenty years suffered with Heart Disease, was turned away by physicians as incurable, death stared him in the face, could not lay down for fear or smothering to death. The laws of health are taught in the schools but not in a way to be of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily bo done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold, was brought before tho school, so that all could hear the dry, loud cough and know its significance see tho thin white coating on the tongue -.nd later, as the cold developed, see tho profuse watery exjjectoration and thin watory discharge from the nose, not one of them would over forget what the first symptoms of a cold wero. The scholar should then be given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could bo cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup. It is made especially for these diseases and is tho moBt prompt and most reliable medicine known for the purpose. 50 cent bottles for sale bv Nye & Co.
