THE
signing of the paper of a pro
fessional dead beat and beggar by city and county ollicials who solicit charity from others for the old vampire, is certainly deserving of criticism. For the past two or three years a ridiculous old scalawag has gone about with bundled up limbs plying industriously the trade of a mendicant. He always carries the recommendation of some public man and springs it on the unsuspecting with telling effect until it becomes an old story. Crawfordsville is not a large enough place to enjoy the luxury of professional beggars and has a good poor farm with a brand new superintendent for all who are mendaciously inclined.

Senator Turple Speak..
WASIUNO
IO.V, Dec. 18.—In tlie scnato
Thursday Senator Turpie, of Indiana, made the tirst set speech of the session. It was an argument in support of the proposition to elect United StutcH senators b,v direct vote, of the people, lie said the passage of the proposed amendment would be in accordance with the lav of national growth. It would licstow upon tlia people a gift entirely worthy of their acceptance and of the senate's proffer. In conclusion he said: "We are preparing for the exhibition of splendid international pageant coiiimcnioi'utive of the discovery and settlement of this continent. In the imperial commercial metropolis of the great lakes, that urban miracle of the century, we are to show from our own country, we are to be sent Irotn others, whatever is most excellent in nature, an' or industry. Many a medal will be cast, many a souvenir will bo designed in honor of an event so notable. It would tie most felicitous should we signalize it by the submission aud adoption of this amendment—thus publishing to this grand coniuiercial court of the world's commerce .and exchange that the preat republic of the west had Kiven to its people direct control of the legislative department of the government. Such an act would be a monument of the age worthy of Its Rollins and fortunes, more enduring than the Eiffel tower, more imperishable than the column of Trojan or tho arch of Titus, which havo for centuries marked and adorned the site of the eternal city. Herein the right, truly divine, of self government the sovereign rule and dominion ol the people would b$ proclaimed and gloritled In the eyes of all the earth's inhabitants to the latest posterity.1'

What spectacle is more disgusting than that of a man or woman with a skin disease which shows itself in pimples or blotches on hands, arms, face and nock? It is simply impure blood. See what Brandreth's Pills did for a chronic case: George Chapman, Pincening, Mich., says: "For years I was in the Mounted Infantry in the U. S. Army, residing dur-ing-that time principally in Texas. Almost all of that time I had a chronic skin disease, characterized by an eruption over the entire surface ot my legs and thighs, arms and chest. The doctors termed it eczema. I had given up nil hopes of ever being cured, when Brandreth's Pills were recommended to me. I concluded to try them, and I nave thanked God daily since then that did so I used them for about thr«e months and by that time was completely cured and have never had any trouble since."

Among the thousands of testimonials of cures by Dr. Miles's New Heart Cure, is that of Nathan Allisons, a well known citizen at Glen ltock, Pa., who for years had shortness of breath, sleeplessness, pain in left Bide, shoulders, smothering spells, stc. one bottle of Dr. Miles' New Heart Cure and one box of Nerve and Liver Pills, cured him. Peter Jatjuet, Salem. N. J., is another witness. For twenty years silffered with Heart Disease, was turned away by physicians as incurable, death stared him in the face, could not lay down for fear of smothering to death. Immediately after using New Cure he felt better and could lay down and sleep all night, and is now a well man. The New Cure is sold, also free book, by Nye «fc Co.
The laws of health are taught in the schools but not in a way to bo of much practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted a cold, was brought before tho school, so that all could hear the dry, loud cough and know its significance see the thin .vhite coating on the tongue and later, as the cold developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and thin watery dischargo from the nose, not one of them would over forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then bo given Chamberlain's Cough Remedy freely, that all might see that oven severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup. It is made especially for these diseases and is the most prompt and most reliable medicine known for the purpose..... 50 cent bottles for sale bv Nye & Co.
