A Freak Loose,

Grant Agnew, deputy sheriff, goes out three miles north every "veiling to hunt a crazy man who is terrorizing the whole community. He is evidently a refugee from some asylnm and is making life a burden to the good people in whoso neighborhood he has taken up bis abode. If Mr. Agnew does not catch him to-night he will organize drive and chase him down like a fox.

Laave Your Orders for Service. The People's Natural Gas Company requests all those persons who contemplate piping for gas even within the next three months to leave their orders for service at once. It is not* necessary that they shouid pipe their houses now. That can be done at any time. The company desires to tap the mains during the mild weathor and thus have all the streets repaired as soon as possible.

Prof. Oumnock Entertains. The Y.

M. C. A. auditorium has held

more people than it held last evening, but for all that the audience was very creditable and what is more was well repaid for its attendance. Prof. Cuinuoek is possessed of rare genius .as an elo cutionist and succeeded in p'.easing an almost hypercritical audienfo. His selections are very good and rendered after the manner of true art rather than the bombast so characteristic of many elocutionists. The entertainment was all that could be asked.

Please notice eliango of time at latter place. Hereafter until further notice the preaching hour will be at night instead of the afternoon. The outlook for success at Gray's Chapel better than for some time post and the intention is to organize and work for victory in the name of the Lord. THE 0ATAEA0T CITY.

Great Falls, Montana—Its Population-Its

Water Power-Its Rapid Growth.

ICorresiwndenco of tlio Journal] Gheat Falus, Montana, Doc. 12.---So many of my friends in old Montgomery, are inquiring shout the progress and prospects of Groat Falls, Montana, that I would fain answer thn.ugh your reliable columns.

The present population of the teven-year-old "Cataract City" is ri,500. The Great Falls Water Power and Townsite company, has a capital of §5,000,000. President Harrison, Phil Armour, and Marshal Field, of Chicago, Broadwater, and other millionaires of Helena, are among its stockholders. Jim J. Hill is president of the Groat Falls company,as well as the Groat Northern railroad. The company has built a dam across the Missouri river, costing over $500,000, which develops 100,000 horse power. Only a short distance below this place are two other falls which are estimated at 120,000 horse-power each and as yet, entirely undeveloped. The Boston Consolidated Mining co upany is now building a smolter and refining works to cost §3,000,000 when completed. This smolter has a contract for 10,000 horse-power from the dam. The Butte .t Boston Mining i:ompany are under contract to come to Groat Falls and put up another $3,000,000 smelter next spring. These two immense smeltors guarantee an increase of 100 per cent. the population of Great Falls next year as in past three years. She bids well to continue this donbling-of-population record till 1900, Fince many factories are availing themselves of the matchless water ]Mwer. Largo quantities of coal lie within five miles of the city, and one mine twelve miles away, is mining 1,20!! tons a day and is able to deliver the same to the smelters of the city at 8" cents per ton. The [lower from the great dam is being utilized rapidly. The electric plant is an elaborate struct ureand the machinery running all tic electric light works and speeding tl 1 cars on the street railways of the wh.li city is run by water power. There an now in operation nine miles of eh etri road and a like distance building

Beautiful building stone is qnarritd

OIM

mile from the city, of two varieties, tli gray and the red. The city has many stone blocks, one built of the white, five stories high and one of the red seven stories high. Great Falls is the central point on the Great Northern Railroad as it branches in all directions to the mines. The car shops of the Great Northern aro now being built in the west part of the city, and when com ploted this will add $5,000 more to the monthly pay roll of the city. The Great Falls & Canada road does a nourishing business for the city, ami the Burling ton Railroad lias surveyed road Great Falls, and will construct the same next spring. The city's lumber null capacity is 120,000 feet per day. It is figured by a government eng'neer that the Giant Spring on tlio east side of city is capable of supplying nine cities like Washington with all the water tlioy could possibly use. The many rich mines in sight, of the cit.v send daily trains heavily laden with precious ore to the Montana Smelter, which runs full blast every hour of the year. The Granite Mountain mine has already paid out in dividends $8,000,000. The "cow-bo sLatutis,'' (as one lawyer termed the laws of Montana,) places the farmers decidedly in the vantage-ground, and this, combined with Undo Sam's free homesteads and free pasture in million acre tracts, makes tbe ranchers the wealthy class. They havo built magnificent blocks in Grea't Falls and rent the same to merchants. Tlio prodigious shipments of grain and stock from the city, convince one that when more of

Montana's mountain rivers are utilized in irrigation, she will hold the front seat in the galaxy of States as an agricultural as well as a mineral State. Even Indiana would have profited much this year by a system of irrigation! Gre:it Falls hiis six banks, seven churches, four school buildings, (one of whieb cost $10,000) public library, $50,000 theater lilding, fair association with heavier premium list than is found east of tho Mississippi two daily and two weekly pajjers second to none west the Mississippi. Tho permanent ocation of State capital is left to the vote of tho people in '92, and Great Falls will bo ta tlia front in the "freo for all race,"' for nature suggests it and her citizen3 push hard and all in the sumo direction.
