IS COMPETITION A FAILURE! The supposition that eom]etition is the life of trade has, since the time of •Vdani .Smith, been an axiom and a proverb. We have believed in the doctrine that competition is the life of trc 'e as implicitly perhaps as we have believed in any economic doctrine. In spite of this, every observii"? man knows that competition has very ofun proved to be the death of trade. In fact, one of the trongest forces that has caused the organization of monopolies and trusts is the demonstration by competing firms tuat competition would end in disaster. The inability to withstand competition what has caused combinations. Mr. Aldace F. Walker, who was for a ioug me one of the Inter-State Commerce Commissioners and is now the chairirfan of the Western Tratlic Association, has ride a thorough historical study of the rise, growth, and application of this loctrine of ••competition the life of trade," and he shows in thoughtful contribution to the December numlmr of The Fontm how competition is just as often the death ot trade as it is the ife of trade. He shows how the old doctrine that we have so long believed in has utterly broken down. 11a shows that by the development of modern commerce competition can no longer be trusted in all cases to bring or to mainlin a healthful sort of industry. He concludes his study of this subject by expressing himself in favor of a regulated competition. Mr. Walker's historical treatment of the subject and the pertinent examples with which he fortifies his arguments, make this one of the most original anil important contributions to economic science that has been presented incur current literature for many a day.
