INMAXAPOMS, Ind., Dec. *J. The trustees of the state soldiers' orphans' home at Knightstown met recently. Iu the regtflar appropriation bill the legislature gave '.1.1,000 as a fund to maintain the home, but in a subsequent special law an appropriation of $15 per month per capita was made. The minds of the trustees are confused as to how they shall be guided in spending either appropriation, and the state auditor will recognize neither fund until the mntter is legally settled. Tlie trustees say that the appropriation of 505,000 is not enough to maintain the home, which now has nearly 700 inmates and officers, but that with £15 per capita it can be done. Tho report shows that the school is a success. Only two deaths occurred in it during the year.

DR. HALL'S CALISTHENICS.

IIotT (ho Theory Te*tml by a Vont| Mutt. (Copyrighted by Let) & Shcpnrd, Boston* and {.uhllshed by 6pccinl arrangomout with thera.|

Dr. Hall says those people who are troubUnl with cold f'eot at bedtime ehotild bend over and smartly slap the calves of their legs for about five minutes. This struck a young man who board8 on Essex street to be about as sensible a piece of advice as he ever heard. So he put it to tho test after disrobing himself on Saturday night. Efe bent ovqr and pounded away at himself, and nil tho time made a noise with Ilia

mouth, like the hiss of escaping steam. This noise attracted the attention of one of tlie boarders, and he told the laudlady that there must bo a fire in that room, because he could hear it siz, and could hear an allired snapping and popping going on in there.

The landlady didn't pause to argue. She caught up a pail and plunged for tho place at once. Tho boarder followed with a gigantic clothes brush. Both of them precipitated themselves into the room together. The advent was so sudden that tho boarder who was warming himself had no chance to dodge. And there was too much momentum to the landlady and the other boarder to permit them to recover themselves in time. So there was a collision. The landlady saw it coming and instinctively held the pail in front of her. But the disciple of Hall didn't see it, as his back was to the door and his head nearly to the floor, and before he could look up on hearing the door fly open the visitors were on him, and the contents of the pail over him, and the three, with pail and clothes brush, came down in a crash together. How the landlady extricated herself and got out of that room as quick aa she did will always remain a mystery to the two men who stood there and glared ai each other for some fifteen minutes.

An Abased Roy.

You can always tell a boy whose mother cuts his hair. Not because the edges of it IOOK as if it had been chewed off by an absentrainded horse, but you tell it by the way he stops on the street and wriggles his shoulders. When a fond mother has to cut her boy's hair, she is careful to guard against any annoyance and muss by laying a sheet on the carpet. It has never yet occurred to her to sit over bare floor and put the sheet around his neck. Then 6he draws the front hair over his eyes, and leaves it there while she cuts that which is at the back. The hair which lies over his eyes appears to be surcharged with electric needles, and that which is silently droppiug down under his shirtband appears to be on fire. She has unconsciously continued to push his head forward until his nose presses his breast, and is too busily engaged to notice the snuffling sound that is becoming alarmingly frequent.

In the meantime he is seized with an irresistible desire to blow his nose, but recollects that his handkerchief is in the other room. Then a fly lights on his nose and does it so unexpectedly that he involuntarily dodges and catches the points of the shears in his left ear. At

this he commences to cry and wish he was a man. But his mother doesn't notice him. She merely hits him on the other ear to inspire him with confidence and goes on with the work. When she is through, she holds his jacket collar back from his neck and with her mouth blows the short bits of hair from the top of his head down his back. He calls her attention to this fact, but she looks for anew place on his head and hits him there, and asks him why he didn't use his hatldkerchief. Then he takes his awfully disfigured head to the mirror and looks at it, and, young as ho is, shudders as he thinks of what the boys on the street will say.

Locating an Evil.

A Danbury auctioneer writing a lettor of advice to a young friend, closed up with'the following astonishing information: "The evil that yon do through life will come back to plague you on the day of your death, or, if stormy, on the first fair day thereafter."

A Lingering Joy.

The reason an urchin gave for being late at school Monday was that the boy in the next house was going to have a dressing down with a bedcord and he waited to hear him howl.

Lawyer and Patent Solicitor.

Joel Block, South Washington St., Crawfordsville, ind.

The laws of health are taught in tho schools but not in a way to be of muck practical benefit and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who had just contracted cold, was brought before tho school, so that all could hear the dry, loud cough and know its significance see tlie thin white coating on the tongue and later, as tho cold developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then bo given Chamberlain's Cough Kjniedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or nt least greatly mitigab d, when properly treated as soon as the first symptoms appear. -This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup. It is made especially for these diseases and iB the most prompt and most reliable medicine known for the purpose. 50 cent bottles for sale bv Nye Co/
