The Juvenile Temple.

Oil last Saturday afternoon Silver Spray Temple, No. SO, Juvenile Temple, met in regular session at Good Templars" Hall, and transacted a great deal of business relative to the upbuilding of the temple and the arranging of a programme for Thursday night, Dec. .'5. wherein they are to take part in the literary exercises. Under the superintendency of Miss Emma Buck, the temple is in a flourishing condition, and is constantly growing in membership. She is ably assisted by Miss Minnie Kepler, the efficient and capable secretary. The juveniles are well organized anil welltrained and about Christmas time will give one of their most interesting entertainments.

Ttie Burglar Bold.

"Spike" Hennessey, the famous burg"The Stowaway," completely par-

lar in "Tlie Stowaway,' com alyzed the entire business staff of the Council BlutT (Ilobe the other day by directly walking into their office and requesting the cashier to lock up the safe containing the subscription list nnd other valuables. The cashier cheerfully implied with the singular request and then Mr. Hennessey blithely seated himself in front of the safe and proceeded to turn the combination dial '.tack and rth. In the space of three short luin utes the bolts shot back and the entire plant was exposed to view. Then the merry burglar bowed himself out. and they are talking over the matter still in the prohibition town just over the river from Omaha. An expert burglar is a handy man to have with a show, for if the company is unable to get out of town the cracksman can go ahead an find the "combination."

The Christmas number of Sciilnter's Mai/itzinr contains ten illustrated articles, in which is represented some of ihe best work of well known artists.

Sarah Orme .Tewett's new novelette has been purchased by the Ladies' it

The Scientific Amcricnn, published by Munn .t Co., New York, presents weekly to its readers the best and most reliable record of various improvements machinery, while the scientific proress of the country can in no way Vie gleaned so well as by the regular perusual of its pages.

If yon will bring business talent with your literary ability, says A. Engarde The Inlaifl I'rintcr for December, your chances for success will be rastly augmented. If your care only for the money handed you by the cashier for your work, and never care to hen or interest vourself in the vast work and intricate'machinery which makes the paper and pushes it, and brings iu the money to keep it running, you will stny on the unfortunate side of the be it o|]Krtunities.

It is related bv a writer in the „Yi*ir EIHJIIIIKI Magazine for December that although Hawthorne at college t««k part in the "blows,'' and much as he enjoved being present at these festal scenes, "'he never told a story or sang a song. Ilis voice was never h«ird in any shout of merriment: but the silent 1 (earning smile would testify to his keen appreciation of the scene, nnd to liis enjoyment of the wit. He wonld sit for whole evening with head gently in clined to one side, hreiring every word, seeing everv gesture, and yet scarcely a word would pass his lips."

Anxious About the Ladies.

I L. J. Clark, of Mexico, N. Y., who

1

has been visiting in th city, was an old 'acquaintance of Rev. ,v. vred Pet lit, who is now serving a life sentence in the Northern prison for poisoning his wife. Mr. Clark called at the prison

Wednesday afternoon and was accorded an interview with Pettit. The prisoner I formerly resided in Mexico. N. Y., nnd appeared very much pleased at seeing someone from his old home. Pettit I asked many questions regarding his old friends and acquaintances and was greatly interested in every bit yf inforillation regarding them. He was particularly anxious to know alxmtthe1 ladies and girls he was acquainted with.!

Mr. Clark gave him much information I regarding the place and the jieople and together it was quite a "red letter" day for Pettit. Pettit spent his younger days in Mexico, N. Y„ near where his mother still resides. Mr. Clark and Mr. Pettit were vory closely associated while the latter resided in Mexico. and"j both sang in the same choir for four years. Although Pettit made great religious pretensions he I tore nn unenvia ble reputation. When the statement that Pettit had poisoned his «ife reached Mexico no one who knew him was surprised, nnd everyone believed that ho was guilty of "the charge.—Michigan City Dixpatch.

Fiuney-Heaton.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. James Heaton was the scene of a quiet vet unusually beautiful and impressive wedding last evening. In the presence of ibout forty friends and relatives E.lna Meredith Heaton, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Heaton, became the happy wife of Dr. Everett B. Finney. Promptly at 8 o'clock, almost before the wedding march notes had ceased echoing, the solemn words were pronounced which made the parties man and wife. The ceremony was performed by Kev. H. T. Davis of this city. The parlors where jthe ceremony took place were lecorated with palms, ferns and chrysanthemums and were brilliantly lighted. Immediately following the ceremony ind congratulations an ample wedding supper was served. The bride graduated from the Lincoln high school 111 18S7 and since early girlhood has been one of the most highly esteemed and popular young ladies in this city. The groom has grown to manhood in Lincoln ind is deemed one of the best young physicians and surgeons in the State. Probably no other wedding was so surrounded with happy pros]ects or so many kind wishes. Lincoln (-Veh

Best Acre of Corn.

The l'rairie Chapel Loilge, F. 'il. A., has paiil $5 to N. K. ]51ackfonl for the best acre of corn raised this year. The following is the manner of cultivation used by Mr. Blackford: "The soil was black, underdrained. broken part in February and part the last of March, (i inches deep, dragged with a three-horse drag, followed by spring-tooth harrow, red ragged and planted May lo 31^31 feet with planter, replanted and th nned ultivated twice with two horse corn plow using bull tongues both times, laid by before harvest, would have plowed again after harvest but it was tix dry. This ground had been seven years in cultivation, first and second year corn, third rye, fourth clover pasture, fifth corn, sixth wheat sown to clover nnd broken last spring for corn. The seed was a mixture from several farms, mostly yellow,Loaning and Bloody Butcher va rieties. The earliest breaking was the poorest corn and ail of it cut short bv drv weather. The yield was 82.1 bushels

A Bad Egg.

Some days 6ince a well known young sport of Crawfordsville disappeared and nothing has since been heard of him, except some peculiar actions prior to his sudden leave. It is stated on good authority that he went from Crawfordsville to Lafayette, and there forged his father's name for $500. The money obtained. he left for California where he is uow supposed to be luxuriating. The father paid the fi rged note and the mat'er will probably never get into the courts. The young man is a bad egg and it appears is rapidly "forging to the front."

Why There Wag No Light.

The electric lights were not on last night and the fact mused much comment. The reason is to be found in the scarcity of coal. The city has some coal but so' close is the famine that it was deemed liest not to run last night.as the skv was clear and the ground hard nnd frozen. There may be worse nights and the city wants to be prepared for them.

J. A. Joel,

The laws of health are taught in the schools but not in a way to be of ma 'h practical !etief:t and are never illustrated by living examples, which in many cases might easily be done. If some scholar, who had'just contracted a cold, was brought before the school, so that all could hear the dry. loud cough and know its significance: see the thin white coating on the tongue and later, as the cold developed, see the profuse watery expectoration and thin watery discharge from the nose, not one of them would ever forget what the first symptoms of a cold were. The scholar should then be given Chamberlain's Cough Kemedy freely, that all might see that even a severe cold could be cured in one or two days, or at least greatly mitigated, when projwrlv treated ns soon as the first symptoms apjiear. This remedy is famous for its cures of coughs colds and croup. It is made especially for these diseases and is the most prompt and most reliable medicine known for tho pur]toso.
