Fire at New Ross.
At S o'clock this morning the-'bak-ery at New Ross was discovered to be in (lames. The whole town turned out and by hard work the fire was soon extinguished. Had it not been for this hard work, however, the whole business portion of the town would have gone up as the wind was blowing briskly in the right direction, and the town has no fire department.

High-Handed Proceedings. I There is a pretty how-de-do in the Whitosville schools. Robert Weeks is the teachor and yesterday exercised a somewhat doubtful prerogative. An eighteen-year-old girl named Nicholson appeared at the school and applied for admittance. Weeks refused to admit her on the ground ihat she was a "tuff" and if she came in a majority of the other pupils would leave. The girl went home in tears and her father at once started on the war path. He raised snch a row altout the affair that A. L. Byers, the school director, came hustling in to see Supt. Zuck. That gentleman stated that the girl had a perfect right in school oven if the charges against her character were true, and sent word to Weeks to ndmit her. It is stated that most of the pupils in the Whitesville schools will leave if Miss Nicholson enters, bnt as long as she bemeans herself propt -iy she can stay and Bhonld stay, as the schools are really to reform.
The World's Fair Celebration. We would again direct the attentii of our citizens to the approaching Exposition Day to be celebrated in the schools of the State '''hanksgiving week. The day offers an excellent opportunity to give to the schoolchildren of Indiana not only a mass of valuable information concerning their native State, but to strengthen their love for the State and to plant in their hearts a sense of pi rsonal responsibility concerning the welfare of her people. On this day i* is hoped that every child will make ix?rsnnal contribution to an important public .enterprise, the preparation of a full and creditable exhibit of the educational work of the State to l»e made at tl.e World's Fair. Every child is expected to bring a penny, to tie used for the purpose indicated. Let every citizcn respond cheerfully to this call, so that the result of the contribution may in the aggregate count the school population of the State.
