The Patriotic Sons.

There were live persons received tho White degree last evening at tho 1'. O. S. of A. The interest is being kept up and this order is making rapid progress. An invitation from Rev. W. H. Brown was accepted to attend services at the Christian church on the evening of Nov.

They are Wearing Over-alls Now, Howard Sergent and George Watkins are two well known Crawfordsville boys who are working in Chicago and rooming together. Both have a ponchant for good cloth.'S and get themselves up regardless. Their many friends hoie will bi pained to learn that they are wearing overalls now when they go to hear i)r. Swing lecture of Sundays. The other day, while tiiey were at work, a burglar bad and bold entered their snug suite of rooms and took every dud thoy had from Howard's patent leather pumps to Goorgo's turkish smoking cap. The stolen clothes were worth S175 and there is groat sorrow in Israel's camp jnst at presont.

Two Old OronieB.

Frank Wills company of comedians, singers and dancers will make their first appearance here Saturday, November 14th, when that very amusing three act farce "Two Old Cronies" will bo given. The piece is full of action from start to finish. Tho musical numbers are numerous and new.. The singors and dancers are all tried and true farco comedy artists, each person being selected with great care to give their respective parts the best interpretation that could be given.. Frank Wills, the bright and shining star of the company, is one of the cleverest and most amusing of tho farce comedians. He spoaks English as German to whom our tongue will forover remain a stranger, tries to speak it. His dialect consequently haB an air of genuineness about it that is most refreshing. Little Genevra Gibson, tho most clever child eight years of age, will astonish every one by her wonderful ability as atuimic. Her imitation of. prominent actors is a prominent treat in itself.

A Harrow Escape.

Yestorday afternoon Tice Liter, who liyes north of this city, purchased two calves near Yountsvillo and as ho was going back home, and near tho "Nich olson Crossing" on the Monon, north of this city, ho stopped his team to talk with a man on business matters. When he started up his team ho was sure that there was no train coming, but in this he was mistaken. Just as he drove on tho crossing tho passenger was not a dozen feet away. Ho whipped up his team but the engine struck the liind wheels of the wngon and throw tlia vehicle and calves into the ditch with Mr. Liter. The train was stopped and backed up to see what daniago "was done. Mr..Liter escaped with a few bruises, but the two calves wore dead and the wagon demolished. Tho conductor and passengers did what thoy could to help Mr. Liter straighten out the wreck and after taking his name and tho amount of damage done the train proceeded on toward Lafayette. It is learned that tho train whistled for the crossing, though Mr. Liter did not Lear tho warning.

A VENERABLE TEAM.

Dr. Stowe Detchon, of New Richmond, and His Thirty-five Year Old Team, Out at New Richmond in tho classic p.ecinets of Coal Creek township, far I faimd for Brittle Ridge and Ben Swank, l.ves l)r. Stowe Detchon. Dr. Detchon is one of the oldest practitioners in

Montgomery county and in his day and generation has dosed out pills and paregoric by tho ton and gallon to tho ailing denizens of glorious old Coal Creek. Of material assistance to the good old doctor in his labor has been a match toi of bay horses which are as familiar to every man. woman and child in the township as tho somewhat portly figure of tho aforementioned Beu Swank, These horscB have been "comrades ever since they were colts," away back in the fifties, and to-day as they lean complacently over the pasture fence rubbing noses and making sarcastic remarks in regard to the high stepping young three-year-olds that go Hilling along the pike, they present a picture indicative both of contentment and good health. Dr. Detchon purchased the horses twenty-five years ago and they were then ten years old. It was a rattling good team too and many a dark night they went slashing through the muddy roads bearing the doctor to some farm house where tho baby had the colic or grandma the senile degeneration. Never was either of them known to stumble or refuse to eat, especially tho latter. For the last few years they have been a little stiff in the joints and within the past few months they have been retired on full feed and allowed to roam over tho pasture recounting the good old days when Coal Creek township could come up smiling from the "Rako Pocket" precinct, where a dozen families resided, with a round Democratic majority of 100. Dr. Detchon very proud of his thirty-live-year-old horses and has taught them many cunning tricks. Both are very fond of sugar and since tho passage of the McICinley bill have almost wavered in their idherence to the party of Andrew Jackson and Silas Jones. They bid fair to live several years yet and are now undoubtedly the oldest team in the State if not tho United States.

The Farmers' Iustitute.

The Farmers' Institute season is beginning with increased interest. J. A. Mount, of this county, was in Southern Indiana last week engaged in addressing theso meetings. This week ho is accompanied by Mrs. Mount, and yesterday they took the train for New Albany and will go from there to Harrison. county. The farmers are beginning to realize the value of improved methods of farming to insure better success financially, and for organized system of reading for intellectual growth. Court houses and halls are being filled with ntorested citizens from the towns and country. Theso by their presence en courage and show their appreciation of efforts to elevate agriculture and advance tho welfare of the State in generi.l. In many counties the court ad journs and all the citizenB contribute to make the Farmers' Institute a success Let Montgomery county be found in the lead, let the people of Crawfords ville and tho adjoining towns and conn try fill the court house and mako our Institute tho best ever hold in tho State

At Music Hall Last Night. A fair sized audienco assembled at Music Hall last night, notwithstanding tho inclemency of the weather, and howl ed and whistled in a most ecstatic manner at tho buffoonery perpetrated on tho stage. "McCarthy's Mishaps" is a mis nomor as the accomplished Mr. McCarthy was tho only member of the troupe who seemed to bo at all "in it." To be sure a sharp hatchet was occasionally stuck in the polished woodon dome of his head by some ontorprising female or a "largo brick thrown heavily against his heavily padded ribs, but for all that he always came up smiling and returned all little favors of the kind with compound interest. Some of the specialties were good and some indifferent, but tho play soemed to tickle the good poople present immensely.
