The People's party carried only five out of eighty-eight counties In Kansas this year, and they were not very lnrge comities either.

.Since the charge of hearesy has been dismissed by the New York Presbytery against Dr. Briggs the Presbyterians will now get a rest and give them time to recuperate the church.

The proper way to settle the coal miner's strike is to increase the wages of the men, even if it increases the cost of coal to consumers. There is such a thing as coal being too cheap.

The Democrats are not wholly satisfied with the way Republicans conducted the campaign in Ohio. Had it been •onducted on sido issues its in Iowa it would have been more satisfactory.

Mit. Mc"Gkath, the late president of the Kansas Farmers' Alliance, reports that its membership has been reduced from 140,000 in 1890 to 60,000 in 1891. Such a decline as that betokens a speedy dissolution,

Is the States where the Australian ballot law was tried far the first time last Tuesday, the result was entirely satisfactory to the Republicans. If New Tork had had such a law it would have been Flower and not Fnssett that would have fallen outside the breast works.

The cost of striking is pretty clearly set forth in a dispatch from Pittsburg, which says that 10,000 railroad miners, who for five weeks have been standing out for an advance in wages, have returned to work at the old rate, miners and operators losing 83,000,000 by t^e diversion.

The evidence is conclusive that the State of New York was 1 Knight by Tammany Hall. Not only in New York City but throughout the State corruption ran riot, and every man in need of a del la got his price, either to vote for Flower or not to vote at all. It is estimated that a half a million was expended in New York City, two wards in Brooklyn had S30,000 each, and that a million was doled out in the remainder of the SUite. Flower's success is the result of the most brazen and ope handed corruption that ever attended an election in that State. New York it sadly in need of the Ahstralian system of voting.

The sad story of Col. John F. Mines whose tragic death occurred in New York the othor day as the result of ten days' drunken debauch is proof though not conclusive, that it is the will power alone that can stop men from be earning drunkards. Col. Mines had tried the Keeley treatment ot Dwight, 111., and believed that ho had been cured. So much faith had ho in the bichloride of gold cure that ho had tak en up his pen in its favor. The A'nrth American Review for last month contained an article written by him which was convincing that tliero 'was efficacy in tho remedy. That ho should lapse and at last die from tho effects of alcoholism is indeed a sad story. There may lie virtue in tho cure, but it only goes to show that the patient should make frequent visits to the institute after his dismissal from tho physician hands.

A gorgeous costume flashed beneath the brilliant lights of a ball-room a queen of society is radiant to-nl^ht." The nervous hands of a weak woman have toiled day and niylit. the weary frame and aching head have known no rest for the dress must be tlnished in time."

Y. Copious Shower* at T.nnt. Indianaroi.is, Ind., Nov.

-l.—The

se

vere drought that has prevailed in Indiana for several months was partially relieved Saturday night and Sunday by showers that have been general over the state. The outlook is for more rain still, and the gloomy prospect that presented itself to tite agricultural classed has been largely abated. The effects of the prolonged dry spell were especially damaging to the southern portion of the state, where there has been no rain of any account in three months. Much of the wheat sown is still lying on the ground, having never sprouted, while that which came up was badly stunted. The effect on late fruits, the prospects for which early in the season were bright, was also ruinous. Aside from the effects on crops, the drought also involved much hardship, as wells and streams dried up and farmers were compelled to haul water for domestic uses aud drive their cattle from 5 to 10 miles.

The Coul Miners' Strtko

Brazil, Ind., Nov. 9.—A mass meeting was held here Saturday to consider the* report of the meeting of the bituminous miners. George Rohri^f wus chosen chairman and Samuel Anderson secretary. State President Michael Comtnisky said that he had done all he could do to prevent a strike, but as one was declared ho intended to stay with the men. lie spoke at length regarding the harmony and good feeling existing between the bituminous and bl()ck miners, and said that he believed that their efforts would be crowned with success, considering the scarcity of coal and the large contracts the operators have entered into. A motion was made to censure the national officers for Iheir conduct in this struggle and indorse the action of the stato president. After a considerable discussion the motion was voted down. A vote of con Hdence was tendered President Comtnisky. The strike is now on in full force.

Tried to Kill HimM'lf In Court. IndiaNAfoi.is, Ind., Xov. 9.—Charles Lynch, ageil 21, was sentenced Saturday night to serve five years in prison for attempting to kill his young wife in a fit of jealousy. The prisoner broke out in loud sobs when the verdict was read, declaring he would kill himself and never go to the penitentiary. Insanity was the plea of the defense. He suddenly left his chair and rushed headlong at a big iron knob on the end of the railing of the jury-box to crush his skull. Ilis foot slipped, his head missed the knob, and he fell flat at the feet of the jury. The sheriff and several of the jurors
