Tin- McKinley law was not framed to please the people of England, and the people of that country are as opposed to it as the Democrats are. Speaking of competition in America reducing the profits of the Welsh tin manufacturers, the London Times says:
A year or two, however, will certainly intervene before the competition can be really dangerous. Long ere that time it is to be hoped that the American people will have ten up tho McKinley law root and branch, or al least have pruned it judiciously. SignE are not wanting that this will come about. The Welsh manufacturers have some strong-siding •hampions in Chicago and elsewhere. The Amer'ean people will not be fooled, however, by these strong-siding champions. .'

There is still no more prospect of rain than there was two months ajro, and everybody views the situation with alarm. WVUs, streams and ponds are completely dry in entire sections, navigation on the Ohio river is impossible, and since 1S50 nothing like this has been known. The worst aspect is the damage to wheat and meaflows. In many inland towns like Charleston water is being sold. The cement factories near here are being supplied by the railways. This state of things prevails over much of southern Indiana forest and fence fires are of frequent occurrence, and streams are drying up.
lnd., Nov. 0.—William
Van Arsdel, the Monon saloon keeper charged with the murder of Dora Thorpe, was held, after a preliminary hearing, to the circuit court to answer the charge of murder in the first degree. Ilis attorneys have presented a petition for a writ of habeas corpus and the writ has been made returnable to-day.

—Tho
state delegate convention of bituminous miners on Thursday evening dccided to join the block coal miners in striking for an Increase in the 6cale of wages. The block coal miners had asked for S5 cents a ton instead of 75, and it hod been refused. They (juit work November 1, but did not formally declare for a strike, waiting the action of the bituminous miners. The block coal men said they would not strike unless joined by the bituminous men asking 75 cents instead of 70. the present scale, as bituminous eoal could be used in place of block. The action will be reported to the block coal miners' convention at Baa/.il to-day, when the strike will be formally declared on. It involves about S.000 bituminous and 3,000 block coat miners. The national otlicers of the United Mine Workers' union are opposed to the strike, and the question is raised whether the strikers will get any money from the strike fund. The operators say they will do nothing, but will quietly await developments.

The clerk refused to take it back so did tho proprietor, who was called to decide the matter.
The lady said there were nits in the hair, and she did not want any In exchange for It'from that shop.
The tone and manner of the dealer were not conciliating. The lady was already angry, and she grew more so in the osciting dialogue that ensued. Finally she picked up a hand glass and threw it at tho man. lie missed tho missile, but it did not miss some of his valuable property, and, moreover, it shivered itself to pieces on tho floor. "Go for an otlicor!" shouted the man to a clerk. "Yes! go for an otlicor!" cried tho Infuriated woman.
When the policeman put in his appearance the dealer said: "Oflidcr, arrest this woman!" "Oftieer, nrrest this -nan!" commanded she. in a tone of authority. "She broke my looking glass!" he said. "lie is an Englishman:" said the lady, who saw at a glance that the policeman was an Irishman.
The officer at (irst looked from ooe to tho other, but when the lady responded: "Oflicor, arrest this Englishman!" ho replied, in a rich brogue and with a hearty good will: "Take out a warrant, lad}-, and I'll take him down—I'll take him down with pleasure."
Uy this time she began to surmise, so she said afterward, what her husband would think of such an affair, and so she resumed her dignity and left the shop, leaving her unfortunate purchase of human hair to make up the loss of the mirror.—St. Louis Chronicle.
