THE ELECTIONS.

The only State where national issues were involved was in Ohio. From the start to tlie finish the candidates for Governor discussed the tariff in all its phases, while the silver question received due attention, especially from Republican speakers. The result is that Major Mclvinley. who stood as the representative of protection to American industry as embodied in what is known as the McKinley law. aud of the present silver law, is elected by nt least 20,000 plurality, while the Legislature is Keptiblican by a majority on joint ballot of from 30 to 3f. This is certainly a triumph of Republican principles and a vindication of the wisdom of the Fiftyfirst Congress in the enactment of the best tariff law over enacted. Il is a signal and emphatic victory.

In New York the issues involved were purely local. Ry the Republicans the war was made on the Tnmamany tiger, one of the most corrupt political organizations that ever existed on earth. The Democrats on the other hand parried the blows of the lienublieaus by charging that the World's Fair was taken from New York because of the opposition of the latter. National issues were not discussed. Tho result is vhat with the help of Flowe.'s barrel which was tapped at both ends the Democrats carried the State by from 30,000 to -10,000 majority. The Legislature, however, is probably Republican.

In .Massachusetts tho Republican seemed to have elected everything on the State ticket except their candidate for Governor, Allen, who is defeated by Russell, the incumbent of that office. The personal popularity of tho Governor probably had as much or more to do with tho result tlirai any issue involved.

In Iowa the issue was mainly local, that of sustaining tho present prohibitory liijuor law. The Republicans championed the law while the Democrats represented the opposition. The result is the probable re-election of Bois, though tho remainder of tho State ticket, is Republican, with Republican Legislature. It shows tnat public sentiment, even in Iowa, is rapidly changing in regard to the methods of regulating the liquor traffic.

Pennsylvania come3 up with a major ity of from 10,000 to 50,000 for tho Re? publican candidates, though but two State officers were voted for.

Maryland, of cou:.-e is Democratic by about 20,000.

Local elections were held in Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado where the A1 liance was tho strongest last year. Tho result shows that the Alliance lil not hold its own and that the Kopnliiie.ms made substantial gains.

Republicans made almost cle sweep of Chicago, as they did also at Detroit, while a Republican Congressman was elected in South Dakota and another in Michigan.

Summing up the results or yesterday elections there is much to encourage Republicans and not much to encourage Democrats.' ,' If they show anything they show that protection and honest money are here and are hero to stay.

fonght the battle on national issues instead of local issues they would have fared better. In Ohio the questions were the tariff and tho free coinage of silver. The Republicans won.

Fred McClure, of the firm of McClnro & Wilson, has sold his interest in said store to Wilson, who will heretofore conduct it alone. Win. It is said that McCluro will go to California and go in busiue-s with John Bittle, his father-in-law.

Wesley Pierson took warning and has crossed the State line in order to escape the just punishment that awaits him for selling intoxicating drinks to those who are in the habit of getting drunk, and to minors. The Bowers brothers are in possession of the saloon now and claim they are selling for Pierson, but the general impression is that they have bought the stock back and are acting agents for him onlv to avoid taking out new license. It should be investigated.

Hallowe'en was duly observed by our young people Saturday evening. Ignite a number kept open house and dealt out refreshments to their mauy callers, besides entertaining them in various other ways. The boys at a later hour, as usual, had to gather up all of the old wagons and buggies, gates, barrels, boxes, etc., and pile them up in front of the doors of those to whom they wanted to pay their compliments. We are glad that there was no destruction of property this time as heretofore.

Rev. Norman Carr, secretary of Franklin college, was here Monday night and preached nt the Baptist church. He says a man by the name of Rocker Fellow, or better known as the oil king of the world, has proposed to donate 838,000 to Franklin college, on the condition tlmt tho Baptists of the State will raise $42,000 which will make 880.000 of an endowment. That was his mission here, to raise funds to help make up the required amount. This church responded quite liberally.

Brandreth's Pills are tho best medicine known. First—They are purely vegetable, iu fact a medicated food.

Sronntl—The same dose always produces the same effoct—other purgatives require increased doses and finally cease acting.

Thml—They purify the blood. Fourth—They invigorate tho digestion and cleanse the stomach and bowels.

Fifth— They stimulate the liver and carry off vitiated bile and other depraved secretions.

Tho first two or three doses tell the story. -Tho skin becomes clear, the eyes bright, the mind active, digestion is restored, costiveuess cured, tho animal vigor is recruited and all decay arrested.

Mnny old soldiers, who contracted chronic diarrlio .'- while in the service, have since been permanently cured of it by Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera anil Diarrhoea Remedy, l'nr sain by Xye A- Co.

An honest Swede tells his story in plain but unmistakable language for the benefit of tho public. -:"One of my children took a severe cold and got the croup. I gave her a teaspoonfnl of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, and in five minutes later I gave her one more. By this time she had to cough up the gathering in her throat. Then she went to sleep and slept good for fifleen minuted. Then she got up and vomited then she went back to bed and slept good for tho remainder of the night. She got the croup the second night and I gave her the same remedy with the same good results. I write tiii« because thought there might be some one in tho same need and not know the true merits of this wonderful medicine."
