Where Fruit Grows Oat of the aod Frott I» Uuknown. One can easily imagine that in a country like this, where fruit and vines gToxv out of rocks, where frost is unknoxvn and one may go barefooted or bathe in the ocean the year round, tho colored man finds himself in an earthly heaven, writes a Nassau correspondent Df the Chicago Herald. An average negTO family in Nassau pays a dollar a month rent for a one-room house, but what does that matter, since they live prettv much outdoors from Nexv Year's t« New Year's? A few pennies will buy enough com hominy for a meal, and sapedillas. mangoes, cocoanuts and pineapples grow in the yard without cultivation.
As a rule the negro family does not know at supper where its breakfast is coming from, but they do not worry over a Httle thing like that. If nothing else turns up they can go doxvn to the harbor and cstch a fexx* fish or send one of the small boys doxvn to the bot torn of the water for a conk. The children don't need shoes and clothing, excepting only Sunday outfits, is a very small matter for either adults or children.
Sunday is the great day. No matter how poor the family, or how fexv the day's work had during the week at fiftv cents the day. Sabbath morning cverv colored man. woman and child come out with a spick and span goxvn and the adults torture their big. sxvollen feet^ with spreading toes and long, flaring heels, by encasing them in cowhide shoes. The average colored person is proud, even if poor. Those who UTe In the suburbs and have to come some distance to church walk the two or t^ree or four miles to the outskirts of the town carrying their shoes in their hands, and when they r«.-ach the citv they sit doxvn and put on their shoe's and stockings*, hire a carriage at twelve and a half cents per passenger and ride into town in good style, as happy as mortals are permitted to be in this
