W or a a pi a W as 1. N. VanSickle, a Moll known business man of Crawfordsvillo, Jnd., who has spent, with his family, three or four winters in the South, was in tlio city yesterday and said to a reporter for the AVFRX: "Speaking of Mia removal of tho capital of Georgia recalls lo my mind a hit of unpublished history al t:iat transaction. I got it from the sheriff of Milledgovilie, Oa„ and he is a truthful, reliable man. Tho capital was removed from Milledgovilie to Atlanta soon after (he war for the reason that the residents of the former place refused 11 board the members of the Legislature. it being composed of persons then known as "carjR't baggers." and negroes. Cn account of this inability to get board, some members of the legislature offered a resolution tha'. tho capital be removed to Atlanta, which :s adopted with scarcely a dissenting voice. ''Millodgevillo," continued Mr. VanSiekle," is now about such a place as Covington, fnd.,though it hasn't as much push and vigor as that quiet hamli-t on the banks of the Wabash. M.lk-dgoville is situated on a tri weekly railroad.—Daiirillr, (III..) AYTRX.

KENTUCKY COLONELS, EVERYONE.
Representatives of the State of line Workman, Fine Horses and fine Whiskey Dacorato the Police Court.
It was principally fine whisky yestoiday and horses and women had little to do with the ease. Col. W. J. Davis is a largo slock raiser of near Maysville, Ky., and is a rare old Ken tucky gentleman who knows tho pedigree of every horse and woman that ever trod tho aristocratic soil of tho Blue Grass Stato. Ho also knows what good whisky is and can throw off the customary

and graco that Sue Burney sold memberships. It seems that ho throw off a few too many iingors yesterday, and peradvotiture a few thumbs for luck. As tho case may be, he was gloriously full about nine o'clock, reposing on a straw pile in one of the livery stables. AN liile ho reclined Col. Jesse Clayton, another scion of a chivalrio race, who at present is acting Mr. Davis' secretary of State and chaperon of a car load of his horses, drifted in almost as full as Col. Davis. Col. Clayt on, in a sportive manner, went through Col. Davis' pockets and, merely as a joke, took his fine gold watch. II th got out Col. Davis' horse and started out for a drive. As ho gaily sped about town became suddenly upon Col. .Jack Peebles, also from Maysville an 1 a Kentucky dude on whom aro no fl or discount. Tho two old cronirs in the colonelcy drove about for several inrs and as a pledge of good will Col. Clayton sold Col. Davis' gol watch to Col. Peebles for tho magnificent sum of So. Tn tho meantime Col. Davis had sobered off and had the whole police fonv 'arcliing Tor Col. Clin ton and the watch. Col. Clayton was overhauled about, six o'clock but Col. 1'cobles was not with him. lie was found later on, however, and it is gravely insinuated th several of the colonels passed tho night in jail. The watch was found and Cots. Davis and Clayton fined for intoxication. Justly outraged at being beaten oiit of a good bargain Col. Peebles took his beautiful bangs out of his poetic eyes long enough to swear out a warrant against Bob Pettit for soiling him whiskey on Sanday. Col. Peebles is bound to get even with someone or havo "blood, Bah."
A Great Attraction.
Robert Downing, tho talented young American tragedian, who appears at Music Hall on next Thursday evening in his great representation of Virginins, was born in Washington, D. C., and commenced his theatrical caroer at tho age of sixteen with a stock company under tho management of John T. Ford, of Baltimore, Md. And to-day, but a tritlo over thirty-two years of age, he ranks among the greatost stars.
In tho history of tho American stage there cannot bo found another instance where an actor has so suddenly become pre-eminent as hnB Robert Downing. Perseverance has done much for him, but all tho perseverance in the world would havo amounted to nothing had he not the true histrionic gonitis to support it. Mr. Downing has stood sido by side, and shared honors with Edwin Booth, Charles Fechter, Josoph Jefferson, Miss Mary Anderson, an 3 others of eminence in most of tho legitimate dramas. By talent and inspiration, tho soul of dramatic! art, sincere devot'on and hurd study, ho has reached -J.be top, nnd holds a place among American actors that tho country can be justly proud of. Ho boing the only man to day capable of filling tho place made vacant by our lato lamented John McCnllough.
Don't Want the Governorship. The Commercial Club of Oklahoma City held a mooting last week and decided to recommend to tho President a suitablo person to bo appointed Governor to succeed Steele, resigned. There was quite a talk over the matter and finally nominations were' declarod in order. Tho Oklahoma Times-Journal says. "Judge Btirford was nominated and Secretary Donovan was abont to put the motion, when tho Judge gained the floor, and urged tho withdrawal of his name, stating that ho would not a copt tho position if it wore tendered him—that in justice to himself nnd family ho could not afford to accept it." After considerable debmto tho club consented to tho withdrawal of his name and A. C. Scott was recommended for tho position. •••?.

A prominent and strangely attractive foaturo of Harper's Magazine for several months past has boon Georgo du Mnurier's romance* of "Peter Ibbetson," with the numerous striking illustrations, by tho saino hand, which accompany it. Tho concluding instalment will appear in tho November number of tho Magazine, und is no less fascinating than thoso which preceded it. Tho Btory is written on entirely original lines, and occupies nn ossentially now field in the department of prose fiction.
Ab tho time approaches for tho World's Fair, greater interest is boing felt in tho marvellous City of tho Lakes Tho Cosmopolitan Magazine has dovotod 28 pngos of tue November number to most interesting and exhaustive article upon Chicago from the pen of tho famous novelist, Col. Thoso two articles together make a complete review of the prosent European situation, and give a clear understanding of the status of each of the great powers-

and tho eminence of tho writer, this is one of tho most important contributions recently made to Amorican periodical literature. "All tho world loves a lover," and though thio may depend somewhnt upon who tho lover is, it is certain that all tho world is interested in the love affairs of man like the author of "Homo Sweet Home." Miss Laura Speor, a connection of the family to which Miss Harden, the lady who won John Hownrd Payne's love, belonged, has written an interesting nrticlo called "John Howard Payne's Southern Sweetheart" for tho November Now England Magazine. ltudyard Kipling's now novel, writton in collaboration with Woloott Balestier for 'Jhe Century, is entitled "Tho Naulahka, a 1'alo of West and East." It is a story of America and India. The principal characters live in a "booming"' Colorado town, where tho story opens, but the scone quickly shifts to tho oourt of an Indian inaharajah, whither the horo and tho lioroiuo journey to moet with most varied experience.
