When the nail was first protected it was supplied by an imported wrought Dail which cost the consumer in this country 20 cents per pound. By the tariff act of l.S"2-l he duty was made 5 cents per pound.at which it remained until 1833. I5v the year 18:28 the price of nails had declined from 8 and 0 cents. In 1830 a better nail than England over had furnished it -~i cents, when there was no tariff, could be purchased at 5 to 7 cents. In 1833 the tariff was reduced to 3 cents. Ttiat Everlasting Tracy Board Bill Again. To lu I'Mi tor The oiirnal. Well it does last pretty well when you come to think of it. I fully realize now that it is good to be advised even by the weaker vessels. Wheu 1 began to got a little out of patieneo about that unpaid board bill I spoke of gently hinting at tho matter through Tuv: Joi'UN.Mi. Wife .nd daughter seriously objected saying it would only prove an annoyance s'ud do no good but of course I, like all other lords of tli- land, knew better than a woman. Now I s.'e my folly but 1 am now in it and must get out the best I can. The ar'.iele in Tun .lontN.u, of yesterday evening now says that no one except Tracy is responsible, that there was no contract of the kind with him. 1 am not an apostle of Tracy nor even an admirer of him as an evangelist. But I jbelieve in the doctrine of giving tho devil his dues.
Now permit me to tell what I know of this, and what I know I know as well as anybody.
Our first knowledge of Dr. Tiaey or his meeting was wheu Rev. Mr. (Hover came to my house and told my folks that such a meeting was to be held here and that those interested had agreed to pay their board bill, lie said committees hail been appointed to make all arrangements and that lie, the Rev. Mr. liarnhill and Mr. Shue were appointed a committee to secure board, ami he came to see if my folks would board them and at what price, there being six of them besides tho big dog. My daughter told him she would keep them for S'2'2 week. He said he would consult the rest of the committee. All the others agreed and lio closed tho contract with her telling her to make out the bill when done and hand it into the finance committe, giving the name of the chairman of that commitE tee. The company staid just two weeks but one of the hands not occupying the bed all the time, she in making out the bill threw off S2, making the bill $12, which was handed to the chairman of the finance committee. He said it would be paid soon, but it ran on and it began to apiiear each time it was mentioned to any connected with it that it was but recollect. No one hinted that it was not all straight and right. It was told me time and again that part of tlumoney had been collected, some in the
Methodist church and some in the Christian church, but my folks never received a dime until just before Dr. Cunningham started on his vacation. There was a meeting called and it .s reported to mo that the matter had been divided among the different ministers to collect from their different churches. Dr. Cnnningham said they asked him to raise §15 as his share. I being a member of his church concluded 1 ought to pay one-fifteenth of that which I handed to him the next day. lie said he was hurried getting ready to start East lmd collected all but three dollars and the other would be paid when he returned but supposo those promising have forgotten it he handed it to me. The $12
I gave to the chairman of the finance committee, and he paid it over to HIT daughter, and thero tho matter rests. I beg pardon for saying so much but must add that in all this time I never heard a hint such as Dr. Tracy's bill not being vouched for. There has been good bit pf kicking because they made such a contract, but it was made with Tracy's brother before the doctor agreed to come, for he was sharp enough to look out for that whether made with the ministers or others I don't know, or whether there was a wiitten contract with him I don't know. I know there was no written contract with my family, nor did they or I think it necessary. \Ve consider our word as good as our bond nnd
rupposed
Now 1 am done: we boarded the Tracy gang, dog and all, for two weeks, for which wo ought to have had 850 but agreed to do it for $12. Of this wo have received S12, and if the good people say that is enough wo can't help ourselves and will grin and bear it.

Now I beg only to add that tho idea advanced in tho article of yesterday evening that while the ministers are in no way responsible yet they will eventually havo to pay it. 2^—Tho
state Farmers' Alliance closed its anuual meeting Friday afternoon with the adoption of a series of resolutions v.liieh at times caused bitter discussion. One of tho resolutions favored "equal civil rights to all persons regardless of sex" and several members took strong ground against it, declaring that the question of female suffrage, was one with which the alliance should not attempt to deal. Similar opposition developed against a resolution declaring against tlie manufacture and sale of intoxicants, but both were adopted. The other resolutions demanded the abolition of national bank issues of currency nud the issue of legal tender treasury notes in sutlicient volume to transact tlie business of the country, the same to be loaned to the people, at not more than 2 per cent, on non-perishable products as indicated in tho sub-treasury plan denounced tho state legislature and the national congress for their extravagance: demanded the suppression of free railroad passes and denounced the efforts of a partisan press to stir up strife between the north and the south. The effort to secure an expression on the question of forming a third party was abandoned, as the sentiment of the delegates ivas found to be opposed to it. A private canvass of the delegates by several third party advocates resulted in the discovery that fully two-thirds were instructed by the local organizations to oppose such a project. 3
