Arrests have beeu made and one of the men ar rested has made a confesion that he was hired to do the burning for $500. Great is Democratic reform.
THE value of imports freo of duty for the fiscal year 1890 was SI G5,008,029, the largest in any year in the history of our commerce. The value of free imports for the first eleven months under the new tariff was §98,992,707 greater than for tho year 1890, and 3107,171,258 greater than for 1889. It should also be considered that sugar, a principal article of import both in quantities and in value, was not admitted freo until April 1, 1891, and from that date the val"0 as well as the percentage of mer eliandise admitted free of duty haB been greatly increased.

PEOPLE are scarce who go to church praying that the preaehcr will take a dead aim at them.

Samuel Harbine, a day laborer living here, was arrested Tuesday night, charged with complicity In the burning of the records. After being arrested Harbine confessed the crime and implicated several prominent people in it, and as a result Auditor James H. Lavelle and I. B. Ilawes, a prominent citizen of Steele township, have been arrested and placed in jail also a man by the name of Basil Ledgcrwood. Tho officers aro now out after Michael Lavelle, a brother of the auditor. Ilarbine's story is that Lavelle hired him to burn the courthouse for ?500, only five dollars of which has been paid. It is reported that
Ledgerwood is also anxious to turn stato's evidence. He claims to have been given a house and lot for his part in the crime. Auditor Lavalte's bondsmen, becoming frightened at the turn affairs were taking, required him to turn all his property over to them. Lavelle has been auditor of the county for eight years and the fact that the people had confidence in him makes his arrest and accusation of the courthouse fire the sensation of the hour. From present circumstances it is supposed he is short in his accounts, but no one knows the amount. Experts are now at work on his books.
Hawes lives on a farm of 500 acres, owned by him, and is in good circumstances. He is a desperate character and was brought in at the muzzle of a Winchester. The city is full of people already from the country and business is practically suspended. The four parties in jail were taken before Judge Hefron. They waived a preliminary bail and Lavelle's and Hawes' were fixed at 85,000 each, and Harbine's and Ledgerwood's at 82,000 each. They are now in jail, not having given bond. Ledgerwood and
Harbine have pleaded guilty in court Sentence has been suspended by Judge Hefron, as they will be used as witnesses.
3
James Padgett was arrested Wednesday night, but was released. He is said to have been present when the conspiracy to burn the courthouse was concocted and to have refused to have anything to do with the plot.
Returns from Indianapolis* I.VDIAN'APOI.is, Ind., Oct. 15.—The official returns show that tho democratic candidates for city officers in Indianapolis were elected Tuesday by the following pluralities: Mayor, Thomas L. Sullivan, 2,728 clerk, R. J. Abrams, 937 police judge, E. C. Busk irk, 1,303. In addition to the sweeping victory of the general ticket the democrats also elected nine out of fifteen council men. The discrepancies in the vote for the different candidates indicate that many ballots were not stamped in accordance with the requirement of the Australian law, and the votes were therefore not counted except on the head of the ticket, where a mark was made opposite the name of the candidate for mayor. The total vote, however, was over 4,000 larger than ever before cast in a municipal election in Indianapolis.

More than 700 soldiers were surprised and slaughtered by the Indians in this battle, and part of the exei cises consisted in removing their remains from their old resting place to the new plot purchased for that purpose. Most of tho soldiers were from New Jersey,
