This question is suggested by a pamphlet before as on 'he rights of laymen in the Methodist Episcopal chnrch. It is a paper read by K-v. T. A. Goodwin, D. D.. of Indianapolis, before amass meeting of Methodist laymen at Washington, Ind.. a few weeks ago. It appeared in the news department of the Indianapolis Journal the next day, and has been published in pamphlet form to meet a demand for it by those who did not see it in that form. Besides there is no concealing the fact that the late discussion of the woman question in that church, and the little regard paid to it by the preachers, has awakened a spirit of inquiry as to the real state of laymen that chnrch. that this paper will not purposely allay. It is a vigorous presentation of ihe author's conclusions after more than a half centnrv's study from the standpoint of a loyal Methodist. It states historic and current facts that will not only interest Methodist laymen, but preachers also, and cannot fail to attract other readers. He concludes that the. government of the church is a pure ministerial oligarchy in which laymen have not a word to say. His treatment of the woman question is unique and must lie despised by all anti-womanists in church and State. In short the pamphlet is verv readable and a man need not le a Methodist to be interested in it. It can be had of the author by mail at 10 cents ngie copy or a dollar a dozen or dollars a hundred.

THE New ork .Su a Democratic newspapei. of standing in journalism in this country is not a free trade advocate by any means. Recently it addressed the following very suggestive inquiries to th* calamity howk-rs in it's own party:
1. W tiy nas the depression in agriculture been so severe, and why does it promise to be lasting in Great Britain, a free trade country 2. Is it the Morrill tariiT or the McKmley tariff that is the cans*1 of short crops in Enrope this year? 3. Why do trusts and monopolies exist and riourish under the regime of fre-e trade, as in Great Britain 4. Why haTe the greatest fortunes made in the T. nited States been made outside of the great protected industries:
To what feature of the tariiT would our Democratic free trade advocate ascribe the depressed condition of the agricultural business of the free trade countries on the other side of the Atlantic. The Siin ^ery clearly sees the senseless cry Democratic papers and orators are making when thev prate about the condition of t' American farmer.
SAYS the Inaianapoiis .WIRS: A decision has jnst been rendered bv the Supreme Court of Minnesota which if it should 1? affirmed by the Supreme Court of the United Stat*s would strike such a blow at gambling in "futures" as would put it in sympathetic relation with the Louisiana Lotterv.

EVAN'SVILLE, Ind., Oct 10.—William Lee v..u: sentenced Friday to the peuitentiary for five years for housebreakinp here in March. He assumes several aliases—William Connell, William McNallv and Frank Lade. After his theft here he was captured In Indianapolis and brought back. After receiving sentence Lee walked over to the bench and handed Judpe Richardson a written history of his life. He said in the paper that he was a Virg-inian by birth. At the age of 14 years he entered the confederate army, in which he served until Lee's surrender, being discharged as a physical as well as a financial wreck, lie was employed as a bartender and soon found himself out of work on account of intemperance. He soon took to roving, associating among thieves who led him to disgrace. After traveling several years he was arrested and convicted of burglary at Cleveland, for which he was sent to the Columbus penitentiary for a term of nine years, which expired last February. Two years and a half ago Lee. alias McNallv. was the best known criminal in the country. It was in connection with the famous tally-sheet forgery, in which Allen 0. Meyer, the noted Cincinnati Enquirer correspondent, narrowly escaped the penitentiary. Lee charges that several attempts were majW to take bis life, and at one time, fearing that he would lose his life anyhow, he attempted to oommit suieide, and shows a scar on his throat as the effect of a knife wound. He charges Superintendent Cnarrington, foreman of the cigar department of the Columbus penitentiary, with the incendiarism which destroyed the building and cost the insurance companies SS,000.
Fa*t Time at Terre Haute. TERRE HAITE, Ind., Oct. 10.—The races ended Friday with darkness and vrith the best event of the week. The great event of the day was the free-for-all pace carried over from Thursday, in which the fastest seven heats ever gone in a race were made. Grant's Abdallah. who on Thursday showed phenomenal speed, was* a hot favorite, but Roy Wilkes took the first heat, and Guy. a 16 to 0 shot, won the three last heats and the race, making a dashing finish in the first heat he won. In the unfinished 2:21 trot Tosa von as she pleased: best time, 2:19'-^. Free-for-all pace—Guy: best time, 2:12. The 2:1S trot—Waiter E.: best time, 4:20 s,'. The 2:24 trot—Addie Hayes best time, 2:19-4,'. Free-for-all trot—Charleston: best time. 2:15^.
After the second heat of the 2:24 trot. Delmareh went against his record— 2:12—made last week in the third heat of a race. Budd Doble was up behind the handsome bay horse, and at the second attempt nodded for the word. It was a beautifully rated mile. The quarter was done in 33 seconds, the. half in 1:06. three-quarters in l:35,-i and the mile in 2:11 *'. There was lustv cheering when the time was hung out, there having been little hope that with so cold a day and soj hard a track the stallion could equal his record.

Oct. 10.—As the Hanover freshman class passed through the streets Thursday night to the residence of a respected citizen who gave a partv in their honor they were greatly annoyed by several juniors and sophomores. After the party the juniors and sophomores, who were waiting outside. seized Bowman, and, putting a rope around his neck, hastened to a neighboring tree, over a limb of which the rope was thrown and the victim was being pulled up. and was only saved from serious if not fatal injuries by Rev. Mr. Chamberlain, who appeared on ihv scene, dispersed the rioters and released younir Bowman.

The showers this week have only laid the dust and soaking rains are badly needed. In central Indiana the drought has not been so severe. The usual amount of wheat has been seeded and wheat is coming up and making a good .stand. Farmers are generallv holding their wheat for a dollar a bushel. The drought has been broken in southern Indiana by good rains. No bad effects are seen, although it will cause seeding to be later than usual, which may or may not prove injurious, 'according to the season later OR.
