The Oldest Oburch Building. The repairs on tho Primitive Baptist, church, on south Walnut street, is nearing completion, and will cost, about •?l,.r)0l). This is tho oldest church building in this city. In 183!) tho church was first erected on a lot near the city electric light works, and about 181!) the three lots where the church now stands were procured of Oen. Manson, who sold the congregation two of tho lots and gave the other one. Tho brick church was then torn down, removed and re-erected on its present location. There is preaching there on the first and third Sundays of each month. On Sunday, Nov. 1, Rev. Samuel Potter, of Perry Creek, will preach.

All the old patrons and as many new ones as feel so inclined can have their milk nianufrcturpd into butter on and after tho 13th of October. A Joke on the Court,

In making out tho blanks for the jury in tho case against the Misses Kenyon and Alloy yesterday Judge Snyder wrote ''confined in tho State prison orth," instead of "confined in tho •oman's reformatory." The jury accordingly in returning its verdict sentenced the ladies to imprisonment in tho State prison, north. This is unauthorized by tho statutes atid there is a good show, so some of tho lawyers think, for tho jolly girls to get anew trial on this ground.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE.

A Timoly Article Upon the Oattle Discaso Raging in This, County. Dr. John N. Taylor, President, of tho State Board of Health, lias prepared tho following articlo in reforonco to tho disease with which many cattle in this county aro affected, makes plain the duty of owners of sick cattlo in reporting tho fact to tho County Health Ollieer, and gives the symptoms of the disease:

Epizootic nptha, or what is more commonly known as "Foot and Mouth Disease" is now prevailing to a considerable extent in this county. It may bo well, under the circumstances, to calf attention to certain sections of the law under which tho State Live Stock Commission is organized. Also to others relating and to tho public health, and governing the Boards of' Health of tho State:

Act of 1889, page 381, Sec. G, reads as follows: "It Bhallbo the duty of any person who discovers, or has reasons to believe, thafany domestic animal belonging to hirii or her, in his care, or that may como under his observation belonging toother parties, is affected with any disease supposed to bo dangorous, contagious or infectious, to immediately report such fact to tho Secretary of tho Board ot Health of the county whore such animal is situated, whoso duty it wil. bo to report the fact to said Sanitary Commission."

Section 7 provides for the inspection, reports and record by tho Secretary of tho County Board of Health, who will immediately put in operation such measures for preventing, tho further spread of tho disorder as ho may doom advisable until such timo as the Livo Stock Commission may tako chargo of tho mat ter.

Section 13 provides as follows: "Any person who shall have in his possession any domestic animal nffccted with any contagious or infections disease, knowing such animal to bo affected, or after receiving notice that such animal is so affected, who shall permit such animal to run at largo, or who shall keep such animal where other domestic animals not affected by or previously reposed to such disease may be exposed to its contagion or infection, or who shall sell, ship, drive, trade, or give away such diseased animal or animals which have been exposed to such infection or contagion, or who shall move or drive, any domestic animal in violation of any direction, rule, or order establishing or regulating uny quarantine, shall be deemed guilty of misdemeanor, and shall upon conviction thereof, bo fined in any Bum not less than ten dollars, nor more than five hundred dollars for each of snoh diseased or exposed domestic initnals which ho shall have thus permitted to run nt large, sell, ship, drive, trade or givo away in violation of the provisions of this act,

I'mriilnl,

that

any owner of any domestic animal which has been with or exposed to any contagious or infectious disease may dispose of the same after having obtained from tho State Veterinarian a certificate of health for such animal or animals."

Section 2,070, Revised Statutes, 1881. providos as follows: "Whoever kills for purpose of sale any sick, diseased, or injured animal, or who has in his possession within intent to sell the meat of any Buch sick, diseased or injured nnimnl, shall be fined not more than five hundred dollars, nor less than fifty dollars, to which mny be added imprisonment in the county jail not more than six months.""

Section 2,652 provided that all domestic animals dying from any cause, shall be burned or buried immediately, under penalty for non-compliance on the part of owner or one having in chargo such domestic animal. Tho rules of tho State Board of Health requires that not less than two feet of earth shall bo doomed a sufficient covering for dead animals.

Section 2071 providos that there shall bo imposed a fine of not less than fifty dollars, nor more than five hundred dollars for selling the milk or other products of any sick, diseased or injured animal.

Epizootic Aptha. so far as is known, first made its appearance in England in tho spring of 1839, and spread rapidly over that country, Ireland and Scotland, prevailed for about two years and then gradually disappeared. Since that time it has appeared in various localities at longer or shorter intervals.

It is in its essential character a contngious eruptive fovor that attaoks all warm-blooded animals, including man liimsolf, under certain circumstances. It consists of an inflammation of tho mucous membranes of the mouth, tioso and throat, of tho conjunction of tho eye, the hairless portions of tho skin, the coronet and clefts of the horns. In a period varying from twonty-four iiotirrto four days after oxiwsuro to tho contagion, cow will exhibit symptoms of shivering, followed by fovor^ the hair will lose its lustor, lntuoness will appear, tho eyes weep, tho nostrils run and saliva Jwill drop from tho mouth. Tho animal then ceases to eat, and an examination of tho inouth will show the cause. Tho insido of tho lips and chooks are covered with vessicles, if examined within eighteen hours, aftor which tune there appoar shallow ulcers with intensely reddened margris. An examination of the feet will show that in tho clefts ot the hooves are tho same vessiclos and ulcers, cansing groat apparent pain and lameness.

Usually, in favorable casos, at the end of the fourth day tho animal begins to improve, and soon all symptoms disappear. It sometimes happens, however, thiit the ulcers become very deep, blood poisoning sets in and the animal either dies or recovers very slowly.

As soon as it is discovered that one of a herd is so attacked it should be separated from the others, and a veterinarian sent for who will institute such measures of cure and preventive ns aro needed.
