THE PITY COUNCIL.
A Lone: Session -fioport of the Cost of the Elcctric Licht Plant. Thoro was a full attendance of tho Council last evening, and tho session proved to bo very interesting. It was thought best that no tnoro work bo done on tho streets, except what was absolutely necessary, until tho natural gas mains wore laid. Tho usual complaint about bog-pons and smells was made, and tho street commissioner was instructed to abate tho nuisance. Tho committee on Schools and Public Buildings was instructed to pipo for natural gas fuel all buildings under tho control of the city, this includes tho school buildings, ongino houses, electric light building, etc. Tho management of tho electric light plant was given in charge of tho electric light committee. The following is the summary of the report or the special oloctric light committee, who had charge the erection of tho electric light system:
Buildings and prounils. Sionni plant Smoko stack Kloctrlc apparatus
Total
Cri dlls
Wm. Richmond was given permission to go on with his contract and paint the electric light polos. Tho firo horses were ordered insured against firo and lightning, and firo insurance to be placed on the electric light- building. Also, S10.000 boiler insurance is to bo placed on tho boilers at electric light building. Tho final ordinance was passed for boulovarding east Wabash avenue, and an ordinance was passed for tho protection of tho electric light system.
Resolutions were passed for the extension of Plum and Piko street through Elstou grovo.
Sidewalks wero ordered in front of Reuben Smith's wagon shoj) and Foreman's blacksmith shop, on Main streot, and on tho wost sido of Plnm street from College to Franklin. Grade stakes are to bo sot for a sidowalk in front of tho property of Capt. Munhall.
Tho city commissioners were instructed to report in the matter of opening and extending tho alloy from John street to Plum, between Collego and Jofforson. Those commissioners are also to report the benefits and damagss on tho proposed widening of south Groon streot from Collego street to the railroad.
Mayor Carr and Councilman Vaivirsdall wero authorized to consult with Prof. Eddy as to tho probable cost of making a capacity tost of the electric light systom, and if in their judgment tho cost is roasonablo thoy woro au thorized to employ bun for that purpose.
During Septombor the total receipts woro $22,071 expenses, $14,254.13. The treasurer reported a balance on hand of $7,8] 7.11. Tho sum of $1,250 was derived from liquor licenses. The council adjourned at 10 o'clock.
It Was, and Then it Was Not. There sooms to have been considerable fun in the council last night at the oxponso of City Attorney Brush. He had taken great pains to proparo an ordinance to prevent the painting of tho oloctric light polos and placing advertisements thoreon, which would put a quietus to the prospects of Win. Richmond to make a few pennies. The ordinance, however, fell into the hands of some person who favored tho painting project, and it was altered to suit his ideas. In this revisod shape it was duly passed while Mr. Brush was otherwise engaged. When the proposition was introduced to givo Mr. Richmond the exclusive right to paint the poles, etc., Mr. Brush qnickly informed the council men that it could not be done, bocauso tho ordinance jn6t passed boiled it. Ono of tho councilman informed him that he whs mistaken and Mr. Brush was willing to bet 85 that ho "surely know what ho was talking about becauso ho had written the ordinance himself." Whoronpon the ordinance was handed to him £and he was soon awaro that his work had been so changed that even tho author thereof did not recognize it.
Taking Tableaux.
1). W. Cox arrived in the city from Evansvillo last night wheiohis Bon Hur tableaux aro now being presented. At Louisville tho immense opera houso was packed every night and the combination did a land office business. At Memphis tho business dono was also ontirely satisfactory, while tho prospects in Evansville are most flattering. Mr. Cox has one of the best paying shows on the road and is working it inn thorough and business like manner.
