llanKin'n "New Fantasma" is as emuploto a trium])h in stage meehanism and transfdnnations as was the old one, so that it is not bmrjrjsiiif that the announcement of its opening jiacked Pupil's Theatre in every part last night. The old "Fantasina," according to tho popular idea, hail exhausted everything possible in stage trickery, imt this idea is scon dissipated with a view of the elaborate stage setting and changes in the "Now Fastasina." Tho .Jules Yen scene, at the bottom of the sea. in tho first act, is a very thrilling one. There are a number or very beautirul elTocts and tableaux, the Pilot's Daughter in particular, calling forth the applause, of the immense audience. Mr. llanlon is ono of the hardest worked men on the stage, as his labor is not confined to that done in the glare of tho footlight". He goes through enough there, and of a very exhausting character, but the work that counts is behind the scenes, in getting everything ready. Fn this respect

Fantasnia" stands almost alone. Thoio a more pieces of scenery, and heavier ones than in any other of its cla 011 t'.ie stage, and each piece must work exintlv so or all will be spoiled. Though has an army of stage hands and asistants and a very competent stage nrinagor, Mr. lFanlon himself looks after this work in detail and never 111 ikes a slip. Hence the perfection of everything last nfglit for a lirst night. The company is a very good one, and presents a number of old familiar faces. -.S7. l.iini.i aiolii'-IJi'iiKji^ritl.

Has tho Judge an Experience? F11 tho cross examination of .Tames Swearingen this morning in the Folliek case, Glodfelter tried to make it appear that Swearingen had urged tho arrest of Alice because of the ill feeling which existed between Fsaac Follicle and himself. A question directly to this effect was objected to by the defense and Judge Hnyder sustained the objection iving: Tho fact that Folliek and Swearingen were enemies does not necessarily imply that Swearingen was an enemy of Alice. Why, 1 have known a man to kick a young gentleman out if his doors and beat him up most cruelly, but at the same time a regard of a most affectionate and lovable nature existed ?etween said young gentleman and tl old man's daughter.''

A Night at theOireus,"

llio most charmingly vivacious comedienne, Nellie MeHonry, will return to Crawfordsville 011 tho 8th in a new and successful play entitled "A Night at tho Circus." It is tho latest work of IF. (Irattan Donnelly, author of •'Ship Ahoy," "Natural (las," and "Later On." It abounds with musical novelties and gems in song. Tt is full of fun and original humor ami is interpreted by a company of strong comedians. Tho graceful Nellie will bo seen on horseback this tinm. Iier winsome face will smile as sweetly as over in this her latest and most distinguished success.

The Diphtheria Scaio.

There are numerous cases of malignant diphtheria boiug reporb.il from around over tho county, although no pronounced cases have as yet been fo.ind in Crawfordsville. Several schools in oho county have been closed and others aro preparing to. It is to be hoped tho disease will not break 01. here as tlio time of year is very unfavorable for it.

1E. IIWHSS t.X HE CURED by local applications, as they cannot reach tho diseased portion of tho oar.

There is only one way to euro deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is causod by an inflamed condition of tho mucous lining of tho Eustachian Tubo. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, ami unless tho inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal conditiou, hearing will bo destroyed forovor nine cases out of ten aro caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of tho mucous surfaces. Wo will give Ono Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (eaurf.il by catarrh) that wo cannot euro by taking Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. 1-'. J. CHENEY CO., Toledo, O.

Ara Such Things Risht?

hero was a little incident in the Fol lick case yesterday which was really pathetic. A young man named Casner

was on the stand for tho defense and had given somo rather immaterial evidence in a straightforward manner.! Whon t-ho examination and cross examination were entirely over as far as the evidence was concerned tho cross examiner asked: "Is your father living, Mr.Casner?"

Tho young man blushed, painfully stammered and finally said: "I don't know." "Do you know who your father is?" '•That is none of your business." "Answer his question," interposed Mr. Seller, of tho defense.

The young man hesitated again ami finally said quite plainly, "I don't know who my father is." "What is your mother's name?" "Lavina Casner." "And you don't know who your father is and whothor ho is living or not?" "No sir."

Tho witness was then excused and with a burning face passed out of the court room. There is but one name for such a cross examination and that is brutality. Tho yi_ung man was in no wise responsible for his parentage and to force liiin to proclaim his mother's shamo in ojen court, when that had not tho most remote bearing on the case at issue, was cruel and inhuman.

Davis, of Dol'aiiw VicePresident, F. M. Erickson, of Wabash: Sjcretary, F. H. Stegmaier, of Indiana University Treasurer. C. M. Bivins, of Purdue University executive committeeman, It. F. Death of Old Tox.

Old Tex, tho famous mocking bird of Capt. J. B. Pence, is dead. The phenomenal bird was known to nearly every one in tho city, and all havo been charmed by liis delightful music. The bird was purchased from a fancier in Kansas. 15 years ago by a lady of this city who afterwards sold him to Captain Pence. Tho fancier said he was tin about, a year old and had been bom in Northern Texas, hence his name. Ho has accompanied Capt. Ponce and wife on all their northern trips and several years with them in California. Six ee years is a green old ago for a bird to attain but Old Tex surely merited it, and passed away full of honors to join the mocking bird choir invisible.
