DUN'S weekly review of trade is to the effect that a season of general ptosperity is promised. Business in nearly nil branches is good, and improvement is reported from many points.

The periodical appearance of that most dangerous of all diseases, diph theria, should be an admonition and a warning to our city council. A good system of sowerage for the city should be the next great improvement inaugurated. What is the cost compared with the lives of tho loved ones of the family circle? the list of wheat producing counties of the State. Gibson stands at the head with 2.000.00(1 bushels, followed bv Madison with 1.S00.000, Knox with 1.700,000, Posey with 1,093,000, Clinton with 1,000,000, Hush with 1,000,000, Grant with l.o'io.OOO, and then Montgomery with 1,500.000. The total yield of the State is estimated nt 03,441,019 bushels, against 27.928,000 hist venr. The largest yield ever before was in 1S79 when it was 51,140,053 bushels. This is a bail year for the calamity howler.

Tiik Boston Hi'vultl says that the 1'resbmon class at Smith's College contains 241 yout women, and that the whole number of students is 700, where sixteen years ago the whole number of students entering the first class was twelve. Nothing, says the Jlerahl. could better illustrate the determination to give young women advantages equal to those which are allowed to young men, and nothing could bo done which will have ntore to do with the future elevation of society or the building up of homes in which Mr. Frederick Harrison declares that women are more and more to have supremacy and influence.

The reunion of the 80th regiment will take place in this city on Thursday, October 8. The indications are that from seventy-five to one hundred will be present, among tho number itt gallant and beloved Colonel, Georgo F. Dick, of Bloomington, 111. The meeting of the veterans will beheld commencing at 9:30 o'clock in the Y. M. C. A. hall. A luncheon hill be spread at noon and the remainder of tho day spent in renewing the friendships formed and cemented nearly a third of a century ago. The deepening pathos of these annual gath erings of old soldiers is beyond the power of language to describe. Their worn, enfeebled or shattered forms are the costly sacrifices of tho flower of tho manhood of tlio loyal North to savo the best government on tho earth. Lot our citizens hang out their banners and givo tl'o boys a royal welcome.

HERE^TA TREAT,

Beeves' Successful English Opera BoufTe Company at Music Hall To-nicht. Perhaps tho most brilliantly success fill opera bonfTo or musical comedy of the present season is given by tho well known Beeves company which appears nt Music Hall to-night. As if there were no truth in the aphorism, "nothing succeeds like success," with utter disregard for tho oxcollont reputation of prior seasons, tho management has completely rejuvenated the production by securing an array of talent seldom found together, and this together with tho magnificent now Parisian wardrobe and spccial scenery prompts Mr. Alan Dale, of the Now York Evenimj World to unbosom himself thus: "For good, honest, fine, entrancing music and elegant costumes commend tne to tho management of tho Reovt English Opora BoulTe Company."

The cast contains names which need no introduction to tho theatre-going public of Crawfordsvillo, prominent among them being Miss May Duryea, Miss Mao Sylvester, Miss Clara Cheesman, Chas. B. Ward, Frank Cloud and Clias. A. Bradloy.

Tho season's novelty is tho introduction of Signor William Martini, the grotesque king of two hemispheres. His entrance in the second act is littlo short of a miracle. Imagine, if you can, a man standing six foot two inchesomorg ing from a two foot hollow sphero in full view of tho audience. This is but one of tho startling feats performed by Martini. See "Fnust" anu be happy.

Make a guess on the gold watch to bo drawn Saturday night at 213 east Main street.

Mrs. Emily Bishop tenches nnd lectures at Chautauqua upon the so called "delsnrto system," which is a sort of psychic nnd physical culture combined. To most people the "'ilelsnrteau view" Dn first presentation seems an absurd jumble, but Mrs. Bishop has made a very orderly science of it. She illustrates the beauty of the system by wearing artistic gowns in graceful manner and being extremely winning in her general style. Her great doctrine is that most women wnste their nervous energy needlessly, nnd that the lean may become plump, the weak strong nnd tlio awkward graceful by proper conservation.

Arguing tho Hank Case*.

Indianai'oi.18, hid., Sept SO. in the tax commissioners' bank case A. C. Harris, representing tlio banks, concluded his argument at 10 o'clock Tuesday forenoon. Mr. Harris devoted most of liis argument to the eleventh enumeration in the bill of {rights in tho constitution of this state, which says: "Tho rights of the people to be secure In their persons, houses, papers and effects against unreasonable search or seizure shall not be violated." Mr. Harris contended that the order issued by the state board of .tax commissioners contemplated an "unreasonable search and seizure," and was not according to "due process of law." Attorney General Smith maintained that the tax board has judicial powers vested in it by the legislature, and hna not only the power of swearing witnesses, but to flue and commit for contempt Whatever Judge Taylor's decision, the case will be appealed to tho supreme court

A sallow fiiceil liinn. ihvssod in failed and insufficient garments, with a knotted, sandy Ixtard, skipped lightly into a Danbury dry goods store yi :iterd.!v afternoon. He had hugged uj. rioso to him in one arm a glass jar with bit of dingy muslin over it. He wanted to see, tlio proprietor, and a cleric obligingly pointed out that gentleman to him, who was then engaged in the herculean task of selling a lady half a yard of linen. Tne stranger stalked np to him. "Bo you the boss, mister?" ho asked, with a seductive smile. "Yes. sir. Anything 1 can do for vou?" "Yes," said the straueer, carefully depositing the jar on the counter, and with an air as if the counter had been erected with this object specially in viow. "I've got a prime article of horseradish here that I want to sell you." "1 don't want to buy any," said the merchant, with a tinge of pettishness in his tone. "It's a prime article, I can tell) "I don't want it." "But yon ain't looked at it, you ain't tried it," argued the vender. "1 tell you 1 don't want it." "Yon can havo it for fifty cents, although it's worth seventy-five. I'll dump it right out in a paper, or I'll leave the jar and you kin bring it back tomorrow." "1 don't want it. I say. Take it away," demanded the merchant, flushing slightly in tho face. "Don't you git in a hurry, boss," persuasively urged tho proprietor of the condiment-. "You don't git such horseradish as this everyday, I kin inform ye. I growed the roots that came from myself, by jickey I I growed'em back of a barn, an I took as much care of their cultivation as if they had been my own flesh and blood. Why, I've got upiu the dead of night with a lantern, and went out back of that barn an tucked them up, as it were. An I said toiny ole woman, sez I, 'Ole woman, them roots will go to make glad the heart of a merchant prince,' sez I, an here they be, grated up an ready for the table. What do yon say?" "1 say, as 1 said before, that 1 don't want your stuff, and 1 want you to take it away from hero at ouce," said tho merchant, who had now become very red in the face. "Stuff!" ejaculated the man, with a start, while bis eyes watered and his under lip trembled. "Stuff! You call that stuff—that which grew right behind my own barn, an which lias had a lantern above it in the dead of nightgrated up by mj- own hands, an with a pint of the best cider vinegar in the country dancing through its wins—yon call it stuff, do you? an yon stand right here an in the b.-oad light of day declare that none of fiat horseradish will fresco your cold meat, an set np before vonr children like a thing of beauty? All light." (He gathered the jar up in his arm again.) "You can't have this horseradish now. You needn't whimper for it. Not a word from you." he added, with as mnch earnestness as if the merchant had dropped on his knees and w:ia agonizingly begging for a hopeless favor. "Yon ain't got money enough in your hull store to buy a grain of it. You shouldn't git as much as a sinell of it-if you was to git right down on your snoot an howl till you wero cracked open. Gosh dum mo!" he suddenly shouted, "111 go out on the boundless prairie an eat every bit of it myself, if it burns a hole clean through mo as big sis a tunnel, an sets the prairie afire an devastates tho land."
