DEMOCRACY AND FREE SUGAR. Tlio immense popularity of free sugar has tempted tlio Democratic party into lyiiift about its record on tlio subject. Major MoKinloy drew tho record ou tlio Democratic liars and demonstrated in his great Bpeecli at Cincinnati Saturday evening that that party has always been agaiust freo sugar. IIo said:
I appeal to this audience to-night whether Tree sugar is a fraud. Those of you who think it is get out. (Laughter.) It has brought blessings to every household in the land, bnt tho Democrats say of courso it is cheaper because it is free, and wo have always been for free sugar. There is not a Democratic tariff law upon tho statute books from 1803 down to the last one they ever made in 1^37 that has not got a tariff on su^ar, raw and refined. Even the Kobert J. Walker tariff, which was regarded as tho best expression of Democratic tariff reform, had a tariff on sugar, raw and reiined of 30 per cent. That is the record of Democratic tariff laws. What is the record of Democratic tariff laws proposed by that party? They commenced proposing them in 187(5. Fernando Wood was tho author of the first, lie had a tariff on sugar from two to three cents per pound. Then came the two Morrison hills, and they had a tariff from a cent and a quarter to three and a quarter, and then came the Mills bill, the very last and final embodiment of Democratic purpose, and he put a tariff of two and a half to three and a quarter cents por pound, and every Democrat in both branches voted for it* That is not all. When I brought this now tariff law in the House with its freo sugar clause in it, every Democrat in the House voted against, it, moved to strike it out. It went to tho Senate and every Democrat in the Senate voted to strike it out, and justified his vote ou the ground that it was a Democratic revenue tariff within tho line of Democratic purpose and Democratic policy, and that you have freo sugar to-dav in spite of the Democratic party.
MOST of the provisions of tho so-called Mclvinley taritl law have now been in force for a year. Tho principal exceptions are tho transfer of raw sugars to the froo list, in forco April 1, and tho increaso of duty on tin plates, in force July 1, 18!(1. Short as has been the life of this measure, and temporary as its influence must necessarily havo been, it has already secured a nicho in the country's history vouchsafed to few Congressional enactments. Passed in the face of such opposition, tho law went into effect under an avalancho of invective and misrepresentation, calcu-
I a tod and designed to blind public sentiment to tho wisdom of its provisions and to i..barrass thoso oflicials chargod with its enforcement. IT IS roally amusing to see tho Indianapolis Sentinel and tho Indianapolis Xetm, the twin Democratic papers of tho Capital city, defending salary grab ordinance recently passed by tho council of that town. If thoro iB anything dear to the Democratic hoart it is a salary grab. Tho only wondor is that
nflor the court ilealnreil it illegal—a court composed of two Democrats and one Republican—tho Sentinel did not "damn thoir cownrdlv souls."
SF.OHKTAHY RUSK savs that the new inspection law has increased tho price of American cattle in ICuropo S18 to $19 jier head. This is another conclusive reason why tho farmers ought to stand by tho Republican party.
TIIE fact that 350,000 pension certificates are to issued during tho curront fiscal yonr goes to show that tho prosont Administration is taking good care of tho interests of the Union veterans.
THE Mclvinley prices please tho farmers. They aro getting much more than they did last year for what they sell and paying less for what they buy.

A Mad Aiiarehltit'n Work.
LOQANSPORT, Ind., Sept. 22.—Lewis York, an insane anarchist of this city, attempted to commit wholesale murder Sunday. Several young women wero visiting at York's and in the afternoon two gentlemen called upou them. York admitted them, bidding them a sullen welcome. lie then went into his cellar and Ignited a fuse attached to a jug containing dynamite. A terrible explosion followed, which broke the window glass, tore off the weather boarding and demolished the llooring. Tho greater portion of the force of the explosion spent Itself outward instoiul of ascending, and as there were large crcvices in the foundation the lives of the occupants of the liouso were saved. On labor day York wrote and circulated blood-curdling anarchist circulars, and for this tlio trades assembly condemned him Saturday night. It is thought this action wrought York into a frenzy and caused his mad act. York's house is the rendezvous where local anarchists hold their meetings and are addressed by foreign orators. A sear for bombs will be made and York will probably bo placed behind bars or in on asylum. He has for many years loudly proclaimed his doctrines here, but as he is undoubtedly insane he wos never Interfered with. Ever since the execution of the Chicago anarchists Yorlt has publicly nsserted that wholesale revenge would be had.

Curtis, alias Jimmy It ice, of Celina, O., accompanied by a score of sports, arrived. Arrangements were immediately made for a match 50 yards run for a purse of $400 at the fair grounds. The runners made fast time, but Curtis was the first to reach the string by a yard. As the contestants were slacking up a pistol shot rang out, quickly followed by another, and the leaden pellets wero seen to throw up the dust in close proximity to Krelder's feet. The latter took down the track at his bebt speed and Curtis, jumping the fence, broke for the woods. The shooter was put under arrest. He claims to bo W. A. Reid, deputy marshal of Eltvood, and says that three weeks ago he backed Kreider for S400 at Tipton, but the latter threw it lie afterward came to Reid and said that if he would back him in a race here he would win it. Reid did so to the tune of 6000 and at the same time told Kreider that if he fooled him again he would shoot him. Reid was placed in jail to await his trial.

Artistic Advertising.
Undoubtedly tho Ivory Soap people deserve credit for tho best grade of illustrations now being used for advertising purposes. The sories of full-page drawings which have been appearing 011 the list page of the Century represents somo of the most copable book'and tnagnzine artists in the country. Tho series must have cost no small figuro. As yet tho "way up" artists do not sign the work they do for advertisers, but I apprehend that it will not be long ere we shall see in the advertising columns such names as George Wharton Edwards, E. W. Ivomble, oto. Such men as theso bring to thoir work, besides more mechanical skill, a trained imagination and an artistic concoption of things. These qualities, when used in connection with advertisements, command scarcely loss interest than when used in the ordinary literary way.—Printer'* Ink, Auauat L% J8!)l.
