of association have been
filed for the organization of the American Tin Plate Company with a capital of §300.000 to manufacture tin plate and sheet iron at Elwocxl. this State. This is another addition to the long list of concerns that are manufacturing or getting ready to manufacture tin plate in this country, the result nf theMcKinlev law.
Tnw important admission is from the Manchester (England) Examiner aiul Ti mrs:
"ff the permanency of the MoKinley regime could be depended upon. British capita! and British workmen would follow the trade across the seas. The result of the Ohio election this year will le regard**! everywhere as going far to determine the permanency of the new law. Mr. McKinley's success will encourage the establishment of tin-plate and other new industries, while his de"«t would have a discouraging effect on the friends of the tariff. Foreign manufacturers could well afford under thwse circumstances to contribute the sum named in the Record dispatch to bring about Mr. McKinlev's defeat."'
THE
latest gossip in the newspapers
concerning Cabinet changes is that Attorney General Miller will be appointed to one of the new Judgeships, and that Gen. T,ew Wallaco will be made Secretary of War. Of course the newspaper correspondents have not been let into auy of the President'8 secrets, and what they say is only guesswork. Should the President, however, conclude to make this change it will certainly lie gratifying to Gen 2nd Wallace's friends as well as an honor well deserved. He would be a worthy successor to the distinguished gentleman who has just been transferred to the Senate.

I do not sine for Maidens. They are roses Hlowiug alone the j^athway I pursue: No sweeter tilings the woudrous world di5closej?.
And they are tender as tho morning dew. Bleated be timid* and children: day and night Their holy scent with me as I write. I do not sing for Schoolboys or Schoolmen.
To give them ease I have no languid themo When, weary with the wear of book and pen. They seek their trim poetic Academe Nor can I sinu them amorous ditties, bred Of too much Ovid on an empty head. I do not sing aloud in measured tone
Of those fair paths the easy-souled pursue Nor do I sin? for Luzarus alono. 1 sing for Div&s and the Devi! too. Ah! would tho feeble song I sing might swell As high as Heaven, and as deep as Helli I sing of the stained outcast at Lore's feet—1V" tare, with his wild eyes on the evening light I sing of sad lives trampled dowu like wheat
L'nder the heel of Lust, in Love's despite: glean behind those wretched shapes ye see In the cold harvest fields of Infamy. I sing of deathbeds (let no man rejoice
Till that last piteous tonch of all is given!) I sing of Death and Lifti with cjnal voice. Heaven watching Hell, and Hell illumed by
Heaven.
I have gone deep, far down the infernal stairAmi seen tho spirits congregating there. I sing of Hope, that all tho lost may hear: 1 sing of Light, that all may feel its rav I sing of Souls, that no one man may fear
I sing of («xi, that some perchance may pray. Amrels in hosts have praised him loud aud long But Lucifer !*haU be the harvest song. Oh. hush a space the sonndfe of voices light
Mixed to the music of a lover's lute. Stranger than dream, so luminously bright, The eyes are dazzled and the mouth is mute, Sits Lucifer singing to sweeten care. Twining immiirUiU* iu his hoary hair!

TKKKK HAUTE.
Ind., Sept. 14.--It
seems to be accepted as a matter of fact here that the railroads and some of the other corporations will resist the collection of taxes on the basis of the appraisement made by the state board. It is not understood there has iven any conference between r.-.ilroad officials on the subject, but the opinion i1- expressed by those who would most likely know the purposes of the men in control of the railroads in the state that the courts will be asked to enjoin the collection of taxes. The proceeding's would be in the United Stales courts, and would probably follow the precedent set in Illinois in 1S73, when an attempt was male to enforce a high tax law. wherein the state was eventually a heavy loser, and two successive legislatures modified the act- The chief complaint here, as to other property as well a-s to rail-' road, is the inequality of the appraisement. The state will net SV'O by the increase on the stailiou Axtell by raising him to Sla.uoO. yet there is not another horse in the slate listed above S2O0. although there are dozens that, with Axtell at S15.000, should be appraised as hijfh as SI.000 at least.
Doomsday Due iu Ten Year*. INIIIAX.U-OUS, Ind., Sept. 14. —Rev. Joseph .lenckes, D. II.. rector of £tI'aul's cathedral, one of the most prominent Episcopal ministers in Indiana, has become convinced :from historical research that the world will end in ten years. When he abandoned the lucralive law practice in Louisville in lsOii to enter the ministry it was his belief that the world would end in thirty-five years, and for a long1 time this was the central idea of his preaching', but in time circumstances tended to check the order of his convictions He has now a thorough awakening through the discovery of an error in the accepted system of chronology which had made the time of the judges as governors of Israel 350 years instead of 4')0 years. He warns all persons to put themselves in the line of believers -if they would avoid becoming ashes under the feet of the righteous." and will to-morrow begin a series of sermons on the subject
The AAftOMtuent Too High. INDIAXAI'OLIS, Ind., Sept. 14.—The returns to the board of assessors showed a total assessment for Indianapolis of SOI.000,000, and this, it was contended, was out of proportion to the a-sessinents of other cities. A committee of citizens waited upon the board and asked for a reduction of 10 per cent., but this was refused. It now develops tHfct the assessment is 565,000,000, or 12 per cent higher than was reported by the auditor who claims that a mistake was made in the first figures. Tax Commissioner Walker says that the board will review the assessment of the Eby property and compel the assessor to reduce it to the amount first reported to the board.
