the People Assured That They "Will be Burning Gas by the First of December.
Last evening nt 7 o'clock A. F. KamBOV received the following telegram: PHILADELPHIA, Sopt. 11.—A. F. limn. sey: Matters me all closed up. Will commence shipment of pipe Tor People's Natural Uas Company to Crawfordsville to-morrow. Crawfordsville people can bo burning natural gas December 1. J. H. Dn.Ki.s.
The above cheering telcgr.ni) removes the least possible doubt of Crawfordsville not getting gas this Winter. It is with a most gestulating humor that THE .TOIUXAL publishes the above and the people who have been croakin" about the projcct failing would now do well to draw in their horns. Natural gas is secured and Crawfordsville is now in possession of another convenience which places it right at the head of In. diami cities.
COLUMBUS EXPLAINS.
The Reason That Oity's Officials Did Not Attead Our Late Banquet. Kveryone is wondering why the Columbus people who were particularly urged to attend the banquet here last Wednesday evening, did not materialize. The following from the Columbus Herald explains the matter: "A gentleman from Crawfordsville, Mr. .J. \V. Scott, made a brief visit to Columbus on Saturday last, and his visit was explained in the Herald of that date:
Mr. Scott's object in coming was to invite our city and county ollicinls together with a large number of citizens to join with the citizens of Crawfords ville in a grand demonstration on Wednesday evening next, on the occasion of the introduction ofolectric light in that progressive town. Mr. Scott had been especially sent here by the Crawfordsville people to extend this invitation in return for the magnificent manner in which the citizens of that city were enjtertained some eighteen months ago.
It became apparent, on Tuesday that no stir was being made by those vh 1 were naturally expected to tc of tlie party in the way of attending this afI'tir, and the question at once arose why Inquiry at once revi a od the fact tliat very lew had received invitations to go. The city officers were not in- I vited, the members of the council had no formal invitation, one only receiving a verbal tip as to the matter. .Several business men were favored with invite.-! tions. but it happened that none of them could mako it convenient to attend. Hence between the very few who were invited and could not go, snd the large numler who could and would have gone but who got ho invitation to go, nobody went.
It is stated that a large number of invitations still remain in Mr. Irwin's hands. The whole matter lias been a botch from the beginning, and the fact lias stirred 1 up considerable 'll-feeling. It. seems to Ilia 1 ferah/ as it xpl nations were in order. -v.

To the people of Crnwfordsville, and its city officials who have shown so 1 much consideration for the oflieials and of a re our people in this matter would seotn to be the "cut direct" and to relieve: ,, Columbus of the dilemma under which VjOOQS o0l& Oil HICLSY JR3yiIltjntS. she has been placed, this explanation of the affair is given. The truth about the mutter is tha» the sending out of the invitations were either grossly neglected, or intentionally omniitted, and whether one or the other, much bitter feeling has been engendered by it. Many of our people desired to go but their self-respect restrained them, as 1 receiving 110 invitation they could not know whether they were of the "elect" or not, and so chose the safe side—and and stayed at home. The Mayor exp?cted an invitation, and anticipating it. made arrangements for 11 gentleman to go in his stead, he being unable to go on account of the illness of his wife, 1 but as his invitation did not. materialize ha declared th't matter off to his substiUite. One or two business! men who were in it. would have gone, if they could have found company to go with.
