Those .Practice Runs.
Tiio practice runs by th tiro depart, liiont have licon disoontiimod indetinilely and possibly for all litno. For some time past several (Mtizens have made loud complaint to 11. 0. Smith, of the Fire Hoard, unci ho was at lasL obl ged to listen to Iheir importunities and for the present at least put a quietus 011 the rims. Several of the citizens'objections became so vehement in their protest, that they threatened to have the entire department arrested for fast driving the next lime a run should bo made. Chief Dorsey hold that these practice runs are nwossary for tho good discipline of tlio firemen and horses as well and intends to mtiko a lifht 011 this ground. There has been no regular alarm now for near ly a month and such is frequently the case. In view of this I10 states thill- the department becomes rusty for want 1 practice and therefore should have it le.ist once a week whether there is a ii re or not. At the next meeting of the council the tire department will Vicing tho matter before the anions in die form of a petition or ordinance and some definite action will be taken. Like most other issues there are two sides to the question and thft council would do well to deliberate well upon tho. matter before acting.

A MILLION a YEAR.
Lottery and Prize Schemes used to Sell Aluin and Ammonia Baking Powders. A New York concern, manufacturers if an ammonia baking powder, boasts that its yearly profits are ovt-r a million lars. While, perhaps, none of the makers of alum jxiwders individually an show so largo earnings yet. their profits are enormous.
A business so profitable, will alwavs '.trae!, to itself tho.?e whose greed will auso them to utterly dirogard the effect tlieir truilic may ,'iavo upon tho health or life of otliero.
Alum baking powders arc introduced largely by gifts, prizes and lottery schemes. A pioco of glassware or china, a child's wagon, sled, a pewter spoon or some other article of attractive appearance, but of small intrinsic value or cost is given with each purchase or a umber is attached to the can which entitles tho customer to a similarly numbered article, or to a prize of some kind. It is in sotno such way as this that tho rade in alum and ammonia baking :\vders, which lias now attained such giant proportions and their consumption by tho public which lias reached an extent which is truly alarming
The highest authorities of ail countries condemn the use of alum in lire: it without reserve. lu America the most listinguishod physicians, chemists and hygionists have declared that the truilic in alum linking powders should be sup pressed by law. In England and France where the subject, of pure food, •ind its oll'eet upon the sysLem, has been more fully considered and made the •mlijeet, of extended experiments by the scientists, so serious a mutter is the use of alum in broad or other food considered to be, that most stringent laws have been enacted to prevent it. These laws aro rigidly enforced, and the sale of alum baking powders would not lie permitted for an hour. Any one who attempted to make them for use in food, or attempted to uso them for raising bread, biscuit or cake would sutler severe penalties.
The ill effects upon the system of food raised by ilium baking powders are the more dangerous because of their insidious charaelor. It would be less dangerous to the community were it fatal at once, for then such food would be bo avoided but their deleterious action lucaiiso imperceptible at first is no less certain.
Tho puckering effect which alum has when taken in the mouth is familiar to everyone. Physicians say this same effect is produced by it upon the delicate coats of the stomach and intestines.
What housewife would take homo to her family 11 can of alum or atnmpnia baking powder if she knew it. Such nvders not only undermine the svstm, lmt it is pointed out that ammonia taken into tho system in even infinit imal doses day after day, imparts to the complexion a sallow and blotched apparanoo.
I!, is safe lo discard all baking powders sold with a prize or gift. What a misnomer are the words "Absolutely Pure,"' as applied to baking powders two of tho largest selling brand, one made from alum, the other containing ammonia and both of these drugged baking powders hnve stamped upon their labels and circulars these words absolutely pure, as a matter of fact they are "Absolutely Poor,'' as shown bv oflicial exatninatioi s.
