St.—The brakenien of the Vera division of the Lake Krie ,fc Western railway struck Wednesday on account of the unsatisfactory schedule submitted and insisted on by the company. Not a freight wheel has moved, and indications point to a bitter struggle. It is not likely that the conductors will Join the men again, the sentiment bcipsr against this second strike. Passenger trains are all running.

I'HANKEoitr, lnd., Sept. 3.—'The assistance of tho police of this city was asked Wednesday evening by the Lake Erie management in putting olT a freight crew which hail boarded the weiit-bound passenger at ilillsburg. When the strike had been declared on their train had been ordered sidetracked and the engine ordered to Muneie, leaving the men to get back to Lafayette as best they could. They boarded the passenger train anil rode through to Star City, the otlicers here refusing to interfere.

CHICAGO, Sept 8.—The remains of Rev. Dr. J. li. L. Soule, who died early Tuesday morning were on Wednesday temporarily deposited in the receiving vaults of Rosehill. The funeral services were held at the house of the son, Frank G. Soule, No. 2707 North Roby street, Ilavenwood, Rev. Henry Neill, of the First Presbyterian church, Uighlau Park, olliciating. [Dr. Soule was born April -1. 1S1.\ ftt Freeport, Mo. His boyhood and youth were spent upon a fortn. Entering Phillips Exeter nendomy, he graduated there In 1833, and also from Dowdotn college two years later. Prom 1S»1 to 18-13 ho studied law, but In 1&3 accepted the professorship of belles lettres at the Collegloto Institute at Terre Haute. Ind. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. Mr. Wright, of Mishawaka. Mayor Heed delivered an address of welcome and President Day responded. The regular addresses of the day were delivered by Revs. W. M. Hell, on "Our Union— What We Seek J. E. Gilbert, on "Fraternity and Improvement W. F. Taylor, on "Our Text Hook a Divine Revelation Timothy Nicholson, on "Whatsoever Thy Hand Findeth to Do." C. L. Meigs dis cussed "Our Union—What We Desire to Do." Over 300 delegates are present and the meeting is one of the most successful ever held. The visitors arc cared for at private homes.
