Crawfordsville has assumed such definite shajH' that there is no longer any shadiw of doubt of its being a success. Tin meeting of stockholders was held last evening in the small court room accord ing to the call published in Tub .lorn N.u.. Although there were less than twenty-live persons present, yet they well represented Crawfordsvilie's lmsi uses intjre-t. Among hose present were Gen. Lew Wallace, (ton. M. IV

Manson, Judge A. 1). Thomas, A. F. Knmsev, Capt. W. P. Herron. liev. .1. 11, Dinnen, City Treasurer Nicholson, Col. I. C. Elston, John M. Schultz, 1\ C. SomerviUe, Tom Nolan, Cal Harnhill, Dudley Jackson, II. S. Brailen and l)r. I. A. Dotchon. About S o'clock Capt. Uerron read the call and moved that Col. I. C. Elston act as chairman. It was so decided ami Col. Elston took the chair. Walter Huleti was selected as secretary. According to the call there were three propositions to be acted upon, to increase the number of directors from live to seven, to reduce the capital stock from §500,000 to 3'K)0,000. making each share worth 8100 instead of $'25 and to elect a new board of directors. Capt. lierron explained that the ci nipany in which stock had been subscribed was the old People's Natural Gas

Company organized over a year ago, and whose attempt to pipe gas by the way of Lebanon was thwarted by Major Doxey building a line to Lebanon. Capt. lierron also told the stockholders that the changes proposed were suggested by the eastern parties who subscribed half the stock. lie offered a resolution inereas ing the directory from five to seven. This created ipiite a discussion when it was learned that she eastern parties would require three directors besides Mr. Dilkes, who represented thorn at Indianapolis, but it was finally adopted bv a lar^e majority. A resolution to reduce the capital stock from 8500,000 to $300,. 01)11 was carried unanimously without much discussion. It is divided into 3.000 shares of 8100. Directors were then elected as follows: W. P. Herron Gen. M. I). Manson and A. F. liamsay of this city, John II. Dilkes. of Indianapolis, II. Churchman, F. L. Potts and W. Webb, of Philadelphia. Thus tin directory stands, three from the Crawfordsville end. three from the Philadelphia ml and one in the middle wh may lie said in a certain sense to represent both ends, lis he is the agent for the eastern capitalists, and also is a subscriber to 85,000 worth of stock in Crawfordsville. besides having other in terests here. The total number of shares voted was -171. and tin onlv can didate receiving the entire votes was A.

F. liamsay, an honor lie has well earned by his untiring efforts in the great cru sadc for natural gas. By-laws were then read and adopted. Article 1 provides that the stockholders' annual meeting shall be held on the first Tuesday in .September, after a two week's notice. Article 2 provides that all elections shall be by ballot, a majority of tin stock making a quorum and the directors shall le stockholders. Article 3 provides that the directors shall elect one of their number President, aud that they shall also elect a Vice President, Secretarv. Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer and General Manager, anil authorizes them to fix silaries and make a report in writing each year. Article 1 provides for the meetings of the directors on the first Tuesday in each month. It also provides a capital stock and investment committee of two directors to look after the personal properly of the companyArticle 5 describes the duties of officers. Article tells how stock may be transfers 1 and how certificates of stock mav be replaced if lost. Article 7 authorizes the treasurer to keep the seal. Article .S locates the principal ofiice in Crawfordsville. Article gives a majority of the directors power to amend or abolish altogether tho by-laws and make new ones. The meeting then adjourned in good humor, as well it might, as a question of great importance to Crawfordsville has been definitely settled and in the right way.

In the course of the evening during the meeting and after it, the secret of all the mysterious negotiations of the past few months came out. According to tlie first arrangements made last June the Kapid Transit Company, of Philadelphia, was to take half the stock amounting to 8150,000 and a New York gentleman named Toles 875,0(10, leaving 875,000 to be raised here. But tho subscription came in so slow here that the Uapid Transit Company found another place to invest its surplus. Then Mr. Dilkes interested the Chester Pipe and Tube Company in the affair.and that company took 8150.0110 worth of stock. Still tho work at this end progressed

slow!v ami liuly Mr. Toles pulled out. In order to make up this dcfcciency in time to get gas in for tho coming winter the heavy stockholders of this place suggested that bonds be issued for tho 875.000 worth of slock not taken. Tho scheme was put through at the meeting last night. The bonds will lie issued and will most likely bo bought up

here in Crawfordsville. 'The four directors present in Crawfordsville met this morning at the olliee if the Indiana Live Stock Insurance Company untl wore in executive session all day. A short time before going to press a Joi'UNAi. reporter ventured into sacred precincts of their presence and found them in a very affable mood. They said the entire time had been devoted to laving out a plan of mains on a plat of the city and determing the size of pipes to be used on the different streets.

This is a rather tedious job and they had not. come to the selection of officers or letting of the contract. However, Mr.

Mikes ventured the remark that work would begin in about two weeks and finished sixty days thereafter. The books for stock are still open and are in the hands of A. F. Kamsav.

A SURPLUS OF ESCORTS.

Mat Goben and Sheriff Bible Wish "The Pleasure of Mrs. Kite's Ootr.piuy" to The Insane Asylum.

When the lunacy commission which sat upon the case of old Mrs. Kite, adjudged her insane last week. Mat Goben got a large sized hustle (in himself and had the commission to appoint him as the old lady's escort to the insane hospital at Indianapolis. Sheriff

Bible was banking on that pleasure, too, and it was naturally his as he had the old girl in his custody and was taking care of her in a most fatherly way. The job was worth about 820 to him as he •ould collect milleage on it while it was only worth expenses to the graspin. Goben. Mr. Bible was very wroth and when Goben made a demand for tho old lady he was refused by the Sheriff. Goben went sputtering away from the jail fairly wild with rage and for the past two days he has made a terrible noise. In fact if noise were all that be needed to bring rain he would discount the Dyrenforth method all to pieces.

The old lady Kite don't want to go with Goben and says she will dio first. The matter now stands unsettled but Goben seems to have slipped up on the new Sheriff and will come out of tho big nd of the horn yet.

More of What the Board of Education Did. In our other article about the proved in gs of the Board of Education it was stated that teachers who had bonne exempt from examinations under tho new law would be examined once a year by the superintendent-. It should have been added that tho only subject ii which the superintendent is expected to grade is what is known among teach ors as theory or "success." The board ordered Superintendent Zuck to have the rules and regulations printed and listrilmtcd by the last of September.

I'lie time for holding township institutes was fixed as follows: Kiplov, Sugar Creek and Union, (first section) first Saturday of each month Coal Creek and Wayne, second Saturdays Brown, Madison and Union, (second section) third Saturdays. The board gave notice that where teachers failed to perform duties assigned them at institutes they should forfeit a day'i even though they are present, journment was taken then until December 21.'

'This afternoon Miss Louie Brown's class in declamation held a contest to determine which one of the pupils should represent the city in the county contest at the fair next Tuesday.
