Indiana Peach Crop.

Another fortnight will wind up the peach season in the great belt of prolucing orchards extending along the Ohio river from Madison. 1ml., to W'estrt, Ky., and the exultant growers pronounce the crop the largest ever known. Their satisfaction is doubly increased, for even with the immense crop lS'Jl, the market prices have been reasonably high and firm throughout the season. A conservative estimate of the crop, obtained from one of the loading growers, and a man well posted on the output of orchards, places the crop in the peach belt at '200.000 bushels, a large part of which has already been marketed.

"Lona John" All Right.

The friends of John S. Hranyon, '90 of Wabash College, have heard that be is still in the land of the living. When his mangled and mutilated remains could be found nowhere it was gravely insinuated by some of the good people who participated in the search that the gonial John had probably gone off without telling his friends and not been murdered at all. It is now learned that he is working with a surveyor's corps somewhere in Washington. It is not known just where but enough has been learned to make his friends believe that his restless ghost will not trouble them soon. "Long John" was a great boy and never bore the ap]earanee of having been marked by a cruel fate for an early death.

Withstanding the Contractors. \t tin? last meeting of the common council tho contract for the putting in of a sido walk along the property of Grandmother I Lea ton on l'luni street was awarded to a tine old Irish gentle man. Now it so happens that if a side walk is put in there the fence of neces sity must le taken down and the we tilled up. In view of this fact Mrs. Lleaton and her family do not favor tin proposed improvement at all. Veeter lay the line old Irish gentleman came along with his force of hands and started in to swipe things generally and car ry out the mandates of the city fathers, lie had not given the fence more than three or four whacks, however, when Mrs. Heaton's daughter, Mrs. Hills, appeared and ordereil a cessation of hos tilitios. She meant, it and hostilities ceased. Kngineer Sharp was called in and for the time decided in favor of the defendant projM-rty owners. Tho matter is now in statu quo and nothing will be done further until after the next council meeting.

After the Doctors.

Dr. Keogan has received tho following letter from the Secretary of the State Board of Health and it applies to a number of physicians in this county who arc very lax in regard to reportin deaths: :.

INDIAN-ATOMS, Aug. HI, '01.—DEAH l)orron.— Prompted by a desire to in crease the elliciency of Boards of Health I desire to call your attention to the following facts:

Tho population of your county ac cording to tho census of 1N!M) is 28,025. Assuming that tho death rate in this State is at least sixteen to the thousand your annual mortality will be 4-18.

If your reports fall short of this mini bor you may know that you are not ceiving complete returns and you should ferret out those who fail to comply with the law and compel them to do their duty. In this connection your atten tion is called to Sections 10 and 11 of an act passed Feb. 1!), 1HJI1, entitled "An act to establish a State Board Health," etc. Yours Truly,

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Towuship Trustees Make Some Chances In School Work To-Day. The county board of education met to-day in Su]Hrintendent /tick's office and transacted quite a good deal of important business. The subject of vonti lating the school rooms was discussed and each trustee resolved to instruct his touchers to ventilate almost entirely by lowering tho windows from the to}'

Every teacher in tho county will be instructed to go by Crawfojdsville time. The school hours though will bo the same as last year. Instead of one oxiinination this year there will be two, one at the close of the term ending Deoomlier '24 and tho other just before the tinal dismissal. Every teacher wil. be required to furnish the parents of the children in the school with monthly reports of grades, absences and tardiness. The most important work done, however, was in reference to the teachers holding exemption licenses, that is teachers who having taugiit six years in a county and who having secured a two or throe years license, 'ire allowed to teach in future in that county without standing an examination. Tho board resolved to have the Superintendent examine a!! such teachers. If they make a grade of 05 they shall be entitled to the same pay other teachers holding a three years license get. if they make rado of 90 the same pay as those lioldnga two years license if a grade of 85 the same as those holding a one veai

L'ense. If they should fall below 85 the trustees will refuse to givo them schools. This resolution is in direct opposition to the stand taken by tho Atirnoy General but for all that it isj boug enforced in other counties and itonsidorod to be just about the thing.

AFTER THE MIDLAND.

All the Agents in This County to Be Dragged Before the Court. Last Spring during tho row and rum pus with the Midlaml railroad, Wm. II. Hicks, of near Pawnee, got a goodly judgment against the road for stock o! his which had been killed. To satisfy this judgment Judge Snyder issued an order that the agent at Pawnee should on the tifteenth of each month pay to the county Clerk for Mr. Hicks one half the receipts of the office. Tho road said nothing but went to sawing wood by working such a system that then should he no receipts at the Pawnee office. Tho agent sells no tickets and passengers pay on the train. Thus Mr. flicks was allowed to whistle with his hands in his pockets. Ho finally tired of this, however and placed the matter in the hands of Humphrey ,t lieeves.

L'liey are preparing to make wnr on the Midland and will have the Pawnee igent arrested for contempt of court All the Midland agents in the county will be dragged up as soon as the cir cuit court convenes and very iikely the onductors running through the county They will be given their instructions to turn in receipts to satisfy the judgment favor of Hicks, and when this is done it is hardly probable that tho Midlaml road will attempt to avoid pavnient any longer.

Postoffice Inspection.

l'ostollico Bonnell has received fron the Postmaster General a courteous re piest to visit all the postofficos of the county for tho purpose of general in piiry and suggestion with a view ulti inately to elevate and improve the Bor vice. Ho is furnished with a list of six teen quortions which ho is requested to answer in regard to each jioBtoffiee, Mr. Bunnell will mark each postmaster "poor," "fair," "good,"' "excellent," "perfect." Tho elements to enter into the rating are the following: Convenience of location of the office, cleanliness. order, keeping of tho accounts, [Msrsonal attention of the postmaster, improvements made in tho servico during tlio last year, and growth in tho business during the past twelve months. Mr. Bonnell expects to begin his visitations about tho 14th of September. As there are thirty postofficos in tho county it will require nearly a month's work. His work will bo a voluntary offering as there is no appropriation to meet tho expenses.
