HE GOT EVEN

A Sjtort Has the Poker Dens Closed Because Ho Couldn't Buy Chips. The "LHIVS" are all attired in sack cloth and ashes. Thing have been merry enough for some time past but are so no more. Yesterday there were three games of ]xker in progress, two on Green stnvt between Market and 1 'ike. ami one on Main between Green and Washington, but to-day all is silence and desolation. Yesterday evening a well known s]Hrt whose initials are M. S. went up to the Main street den with two companions and tried to get into the game. The proprietor refused to sell him chilis ami he became indignant and insisted. Mr. Proprietor told him to get out. lie then stated that if he was not allowed to plav he would have every den in town closed bv the jiolice. Upon this the proprietor lifted up his voice and cried- "Get out of this you blankety blank or I will kick you out of the window." M. S. got in short order but really carried out his threat of complaining to the jKilice and duly notified ollieers Brothers and Grimes of the games. The places were all closed this morning and the boys are loafing on the streets. The notices have not vet been given but the boys expect them this evening. It is pretty tough too as tlio fair week approaches which is usually a regular harvest for the kniglits of the green baise cloth.

A Rare Opportunity.

Everyone noticed the excellent music which was furnished by Gorman's band •Saturday nod was delighted with it. John IJ. Rico, in a conversation with the leader learned thai he was tired of the show business and the traveling incident to it. and that for a salary of SflO a month he would take charge of the Crawfordsville band. The gentleman is ''out of sight" both as a leader and 1! Hat cornet player and if the council votes the subsidy it will be devoted to securing his services. Crawfordsville would then have a band that would be band.

Almost a Wreck. yv.

.Saturday evening about .r o'clock there was a narrow escape from a full tied god wreck on the ilig Four inside of the eitv limits. A box car escaped from the rear end of a freight train which was pulling up the grade between the •tation and the trestle anil began to run back. The east bound passenger train was rolling in and prospects for a smash up about Walnut street were verv bright, but were happily averted by a brakeman who overtook the car and put on the brake just as the passenger came round the curve.

Sad Fate of a Greed Calf.

A queer accident occurred at Now Market on Saturday afternoon. The full blooded registered jersey calf of James Bennett met a tragic death. It was amusing itself bv browsing on a Iear treo in tlio yard and occasionally swallowing a pear whole by ivay of diversion. It finally tried to swallow a good big one but it was no go. Tho pear stuck and with a groan of anguish tho little calf laid over on its side and expired in two minutes.

MR. THOMAS AOOEfTS

After Making a Visit to tho College and Obtaining tho Promise of Certain Improvements.

The negotiations between Wnl.v College and Mason Blanchard Thoi..iw I have been characterized by strictly business methods. The trustees wroto to Mr. Thomas offering him the position of professor of biology and Mr. Thomas promptly replied by appearing in this city to look over the ground personally. He arrived Sunday night at tho Robbins House and left for Ithaca at five o'clock this evening. He brought with him a most flattering letter of introduction fr mi Prof. Dudley, of Cornell, to Judge Thomas. Prof. Dudley expressed the hope that Mr. Thomas would not accept the position as he would be very sadly missed at Cornell. Judge Thomas took him to Prof. Cnm:lell who showed him

over the college and especially through the museum and botanical laboratories. At two o'clock this afternoon Mr. Thomas mot with the executive committee at Treasurer Ristine's office whero the details of the engage ment were arranged. Mr. Thomas is to rcceive SI,200 a year, and the committee are to put certain improvements in the laboratory to tho extent of between $300 and 8400, among others a number of fine microscopes.

A JornN.u, reporter had the pleasure of an introduction to Mr. Thomas this afternoon and it was a pleasure, too. He is a wall built young man, with hair and mustache which might almost be called auburn. In manner he is rather retiring but in conversation shows that he is well able to take care of himself. Ilo rather regretted leaving Cornell for the reason as ho said that ho would not have nearly so much time for original resoirch. But he expressed himself as well pleasod with the college and especially with the new library which he said was probably the finest in the country for a college of this size. He also paid a high compliment to the gentlemen of tho college with whom he had dealt.
