Knorniniis iron steamers, handsome brigs and thriv-Ina.-led schooiiers as large as the ships thenisi'lvc.-. pa-sed .".ml repassed, in bewildering SllCee^sioll. "1 think it's real nice to he a sailor," Baid Tad. enthusiastically, to l'olly, who was walking the deck, followed bv the small dog. l'olly had named liini ••Hoiinee," and as he trotted soberly at her hei .s, on a pair of very short, unsteady legs, he resembled nothing so imich as an animated bunch of black zephyr worsted. ill. I knew ymiM like it," was I'olly's eonlideiit answer, "and vmi'll like it all the better before tile voyage is over."
Tail was ijiiite delighted at this prospect. lint it occurred to him all at oiii-e—and for the first tim- —-that if the voyage should be a verv long one he was rather poorly oil' for clothes. Though perhaps (lie thought) Captain 1'lagg could stop somewhere on the way and buy him a few, out of the wages which he was beginning to earn. "Where is the vessel bound to, mi-^':'" asked Tad. respectfully, being much inijires-ed by the matter-of-fact manlier in which l'olly spoke of the voyage that lay lief, ire them.
W by, away down Kast, to liixport, where father and I live," returned l'ollv. with a comprehensive wa\c ol' her hand, which took in about half of the northern anil eastern horizon.
Bixport's a real nice place, though it isn't ijnite as big as Boston," she continued. explanatorily, ami Tad caught himself wondering if it was anywhere neue the Arctic regions of which wo had read, and if so what he should do for an overcoat—for even then he was beginning to feel chilly in his threadban1 suit. So the afternoon wore slowly away. Captain Klagg smoked and Ptvcred. l'olly played with the dog, George Washington got supper. Eph Whittled up another shingle (which he pulled out from under the hatchcovering), anil Tad meditated. "Strike eight bells, Mr. Small, and call the watch!" shouted Captain Flagg, in a stentorian voice, as a glance at his old-fashioned time-piece showed that it was four o'clock p. m.
The chief mate shut up his jack-knife reluctantly, rose to his feet, am'., dusting off his tarry trousers with great deliberation, struck eight resounding strokes oil the small bell for'ard. Then, lounging aft, lie relieved the wheel, and, seated on the rudder-head, steered witli one hand, while the i.er absently lingered his jack-knife in his pocket. Captain Flagg now'took a scat on the edge of thelittlc trunk cabin, yawned, si|iiinted his eye toward the western horizon, where the sun was g,ling down in a great sea of purple and gold, and patroiii/ingiv beckoned to Tad, who, with some dillidence,...sal down besidej tlie ancient marinei'ipfeftv.-:,: Xi •.

With a shy glance, at, nnc, inscious l'ollv. who was ianializing Houncc by swinging the big sun-bonnet by the strings, before his nose. Tad said lie liked 'em cvci'Vo much. "That's proper." approvingly responded Captain Flagg, "and mind lliat you learn all you can from 'cm. Fph is a trcmen'iis smart sailor." continued the Captain, lowering his voice as lie regarded the youth in jin-.-tiMI. "and what he don't know about ship's duties and reggei'latious :::ain't, worth knowin'."
As Tad's eyes involuntarily followed the direction of the Captain's gaze, lie secretly wondered whether it was eccentricity that prompted Mr. Small to wear a faded calico shirt, a battered slouch hat. tattered vest and dingy canvas trousers. For Tail's idea of a sailor's rig is derived from the ono or two highly-wrought nautical tales which he liad lead in his life, lie fancied that in all climates and weathers. .lack Tar wore a little glazed black hat wit Ii long ribbons, and a blue jacket resplendent with brass buttons, blue trousers', .silk stockings and low-ijnar-tered shoes. lint he's the-the greatest chap to whittle 1 ever sec iu my life," uursued

Indeed, the most that troubled him was the fear that Miss l'olly might possibly laugh when he ventured on deck, iiut, though l'olly had been brought up iu the eoimtrv, she had too much natural politeness to laugh: yet it must be confessed that the depths of the deep sun-bonnet hid a dimple or two, as Tad waddled forward. wondering what the matter could lie with the water to make the Vessel tumble about so.
