John E. Qtiitm Wants tlie Oity to Pay $2,500 Damages. This afternoon M. W. Hrtiner, as attorney for ilolm E. Quinn, entered suit against the city of Crawfordsville for S'2.r0()-dumage which ho avers to have suffered on the 2St-h day of last March. In liis complaint Mr. Quinn goes on to say that for the last three or four yours the city has maintained a dangerous and treacherous alley crossing on the sontli side of Market street between the streets of Green and Washington. This alley is 1'2 feet wide and 1(5 incites bolow the sidewalk, being used as a gutter to drain the alley. It is irregularly paved with largo boulders and is altogether an unwholesome spot even in day time. The curbing on either side is of plank and sticks up abevethe sidewalk, thus forming an elegant stumbling block by which to precipitate the weary passerby headforemost into the alley. Mr. Quinn further states that he was always exceedingly loary of this sjiot and always used great caution in crossing it. The night of March 27, '01, was a dark one and therefore although using great care and diligence Mr. Quinn missed his rekconing and stumbled forward into the alley on liis left foot and leg, throwing his left hip joint out oT place and otherwise injuring himself, lie suffered then and has suffered si nee great bodily pain. Since that time he has been unable to do anywork. Mr. Quinn asserts that he is by trade a blacksmith and can earn Sill a week, lie has therefore lost by not being able to work since March S2G0, and as his leg is permanently injured that is worth 82,000 more. In all to pay expenses and damages besides he asks for $2,500 damages and all proper relief.
What Secretary Morgan Says. W. AY. Morgan, Secretary of the Fair Association, grows more enthusiastic every day about the prospects of the great. Montgomery county fair, which will be open to the public between September 7 and 11. As has been neecessary every year since the fair was started so it will bo necessary again this year to build more stalls to accommodate the live stock. Mr. Morgan was at Frankfort yesterday and secured the entries of a large number of stock owners and will also go to Terre Haute for the same pur p. we. Over sixty horses are now entered in the speed ring which does not include the running races, or the 2:27 pace or the free-for-all trot.
These last two have been left open until Sept. 1. Tell all your friends about the fair and don't forget to como yourself.
The Mildest Mannered Man. The Indiana Bankers are now at West liaden Springs and are all heartily roasting the State Board of Tax Commissioners. Gen. Manson is the only one that has had a good word to say or the law or tlio commission. Gen. Manson took a mild, conservative view. He said he was a director in a small bank and the tax bill tvas all right. It could not lie expected that a [X'rfoct tax system could lie devised in a sixty-days' session, yet lie believed that this was the best tax law that the State ever had, hut he did not think the legislature intended to construe tlio law like Governor Hovoy and Attorney General Smith construed it. Tho question was before tho courts and they should allow tho judges to construe the law without outside interference.
Took AD Overdose,
Brown township is greatly torn up over a wild attempt at suicide madr there Saturday night. The wife of one of the most prominent citizens in that section took an overdose of "rough on rats" with the purpose of ending her existence. Fortunately nho took too large a dose in her zeal and so bv projier medical treatment was saved. It stvms that there had been a little scandal which led to a rupture between husband and wife which ended in liini offering her SO acres of land to leave him. This so worked upon her mind that she committed the rash act of Saturday night.
Gorman's Minstrels.
Tho departure the Gormans linvo made in their minstrel entertainment was evidently pleasing to tlio big audience that was present at tlio opening of the Globo Theatre Monday evening The Messrs. .Tames, John and George Gorman wore heartily received, seen often and always gave satisfaction, and Messrs. John Hymns, Alexander Cameron and .). M. XorcrosB contributed most acceptably to the vocal part of tho programme.— Iloshm Gorman's minstrels will appear at Music Hall Saturday evening.
