A loiter has been received in this citv inquiring into the manners mid custom of Mr. De liruler, the author evidently wishing to learn if Hume is strictly square.
Qnietly Married.
Last owning at the residence of Tamos Mcliilliard in tho presence of only the immediate relatives and friends Rev. S. W. Brown iinitod in marriage iTohn Hoscluvindor and Miss Eva Stani]or. The young folks aro both well and favorably known hero and will begin marred life in this city under auspicious circumstances.
A False Alarm.
Tho firemen wore peacefully snoring nwny iu tho ongino house lust night at 11 Into hour when ull wore awakened hy loml bulToting nt tho door und iin unusual excitement and stir outside. Slipping on rubber coats and boots they liurriodly unlockod tho door expecting to find the city in llames. They woro agreeably surprised, however, to liiul that instead of a lire a wedding feast awaited them. A load of good things had been sent up fromjtho IloschwinderStampor wodding and the boys all feasted ijuite joyfully at Iho midnight hour.

Adulterations Pood.
Many Stiitc.s liavo stringent laws against fiHid adulteration, but they fail to cheek the ovil. It is on tho increase. Tho last report of tho Dairy Ciominissionor of New .Tersoy hIiows tlml -13.90 por cent., or nearly half, off all tho food preparations submitted to him for ex animation were adulterated. Some times the adulterations wore harmless and in tlieso oasos tho piirclnsor would be only swindled, but in many instances rank poisons were found in articles of every day consumption. A largo per contage of canned vegetable, such as peas and string beans, woro found to contain copjioras, used to give a green color, und a number of baking powders had lieen "doctored" with ammonia to give an artificial loavoning strength and to permit of their carrying moro waste matter. In these eases there is not. only fraud but danger to tlio public health *—A". 1*. Tribune.
More Abont That Foot Race. This morning a jmrty of young men came down from Ladoga and brought with Ihoin a foot racer named Williams. That was tho namo ho gave but the one ho was christened in the cradle wo woro unable to loam. Tlioy wanted to pit this gifted runner against a now arrival in Brazil who has made frionds undor tho namo of Kridor. Well, Hilly was a runner of tho old school and was rod hot for ii raco with the Ladogu man, and Brazil backers put up money freely on him until several lmndrod dollars wero in tho balance. Tho raco was supposed to lie for $(00, or S300 Bide. Promptly at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon a largo crowd assembled on a smooth pioco of ground along the Vandiilia track west of the depot. Tho runners started by mutual consent and wero to run sevonty-fU'o yards, lvrider got tho best of the start and held it to tho end, finishing it in 8J seconds. Long faces woro worn by the Ladoga parly who woro inclined to believe they had been beautifully dumped.—Uruzil Times.

ON MOUNT XAUOMA.
A Orawfoftlsvillian Makes the Asceut and Discovers a Volcano.
The Sumner Herald, of Washington, gives an account of a two weeks' outing made by Dr. E. A. Stafford, son of liev. (i. W Stafford, of this city, anil a small party, in which timo they made an ascent of Mt. Tacoma. The party made tlio ascent on July 2!) and HQ. spending tlio night of tho 30th the crater and descending on the 31st. Dr. Stafford succeeded in finding the stone monument u|mn which A. (1. Rogers' party from Enumclaw planted a Hag on .Inly 2, but the flag had been whipped to pieces and blown away. Dr. Stafford save the ascent of the mountain is a feat he docs not care to again undertake. When near the summit it is impossible, on account of the rariliod air, to go more than ten steps without resting. The trip is one of great peril ami dang.u, from narrow slippery paths and falling rocks. Tho party discovered an active volcano located about twenty miles southeast of Mt. Tacoma. Jt omits dense volumes of smoke and is decidedly active. So far as known I Inparty are tho original discoverers of this volcano.
Hunt-Strange.
Mr. Chas. C. Hunt, the popular young druggist on Market street, and Miss Mary A. Strange woro married at S o'clock last evening at the home of tho bride's sister, Mrs. Jas. llusenbark on Market street, in tho presence of thirty or forty relatives and friends. The room was prettily decorated with wreaths and flowers and every feature of the occasion was most pleasant. At the appointed time Elders Vancleave and Oliphant led tho way into the room followed by the attendants, John Fuson and Miss Lulu llnnt, and the high contracting parties, faultlessly dressed, when Mr. Oliphant performed the mar riago ceremony in his decisive, excellent manner, thus passing our young friends over to the sober, business part of life.
A brief, impressive prayer was offered by Elder Vancleave, and taking their soats tho beautiful bride and estimable groom wore congratulated by their many friendB and assured of earnef-t wishes for thoir welfare and happiness, After refreshments were passed the guests repaired to the room where the many handsome presents were inspected while tho liveliest conversation everywhere prevailed. An unusual wedding event and very pleasant ti ill I^ concerned, was the cir cumstauco of a procession of nearly all the guests accompanying the young married people lo their new home on Market streot that had been fitted for their reception, and where music and much social enjoyment brought to close this interesting, and on the part of some, long to bo remembered episode of lifo. Tiic JouitNAt- joins in wishing tin newly-wedded pair all tho pleasure and success that pertains to the marriei state.
Oruolty to Kittens.
Persons accustomed to drive out the coiintry roads for rcrontion are complaining of the cruel manner in which some people treat vonng kittens of which tlioy wish to bo rid. It is said that for livo or six miles out of tho city young kittens in a starving condition can bo sojn along the fences ovory few yards. They have boon takon there by people who doubtless think it cruel to drown thorn, but who by tossing them out of thoir buggies along tho country roadside commit them to tho far worse fato of starvation. Drowning or beheading is a morcy ooinpared to tho slow starvation to which those holploss little things aro consigned, and how tho people who cast kittens upon tlio roadside fancy they aro going to subsist, it would be hard indeed to imagine. Last Monday ono lady observed twolvo of tho little creatures staggoring blindly around in one fonco corner. It was presumably tho extra kittens of a whole neighborhood that had lieen deposited there by somo delegated lady who "did not hav.i tho heart to drown tho dear little things."
A Oomploto Surprise.
Last evening a goodly number of Odd Follows and thoir wives, with stores of delicacies wore driven out to tho residence of William Snyder on tho Covington road. Tt was a surprise party in ovory sonso of tho word. Mr. Snydor and his wifo woro completely overcome and tho children fled at tho approach of what Beomed to be an army. Tho guests took possession of tlio Iioubo and tho tabies woro spread with tho choice viunda which had been brought along. It was after ton o'clock boforo tho last talilo was cared for and tho remainder of tho evening wbb most ploasantly passed by tho guests. The following is the list of tho guoBts: T. N. Myers, T. B. Grimes, J. B. Barr, S. C. Scott, Frank Tucker, Elmer Marsh. Thomas IIoulohan, J. P. runes, It. A. Troutman, A. B. Quick, J. S. Wilhite, B. B. Snydor, J. 11. Snydor, Ira Snyder, J. A. llornbeclt, D. S. Morris, J. T. Williams, W. H. Webster, J. W. Snyder, F. C.-Bandel, P. C. Somorvillo, F. M. Alston and thoir wives Misses Clara Alston, Maude Unlet, Mrs. Henry Unlet .T. C. Hutchinson, E. C.
