A KILKENKV CAT FIGHT. Gen. John 11. liice, of Fort bcott. Kansas, is one of the originators and an ardent supporter of the Alliance movement in Kansas, but withal is an honest, man, and scorns to use the tricks of the demagogue and calamity shrieker to accomplish the objects of tho Alliance organization. On the (ithofJune last IV. C. \Y. McCitne, the editor of the .\nt ifiiul Ei'onoiiiMithe

national

organ of the Alliance and of the People's parly, published in the columns of that paper, the following paragraph in an editorial written by hin.: "The recorded mortgage indebtedness of Kansas was S2H'2.000,000 and that this only told one-half that the in-dobu-.lness 1 chattel mortgages, deeds of trust, bills of sale, notes and other debts of like character, would give $23:2,000.0lH) more, which added to the real estate mortgages makes a total indebtedness of 8-{''.."i,OOO.Ol.lO.

And concluded the article by saying: "The plain facts are, the Slate of Kansas is bankrupt- and her people ruined."

On the. 17th day of -Itinc following lieiieral Hico prepared with much labor and care, a communication in which he defended the State of Kansas against such monstrous declarations which could only result in an irreparable injury to Kansas and her jv-ople. In this communication he showed that the total bonded indebtedness of the State, conn ty. township, cities and towns was only 5f."J7.11 (iiOilO. and that the total indebt edness of the ]eople of Kansas, on mortgages, real estate and chattel, note etc.. was not more than S8"J.000,000 or a total of S12-J. 116.09(5. while in 1S00 tho actual value, of farm products and live stock and farms and city and town lots was $052,71 the assosts of the l-i-ople and State being Si i9,()03.36."i over all their liabilities. This was in addition to the money exjxmded by the State building of K"00 miles of railroad. f.000 school houses, 2.000 churches and the public and charitablo buildings of the State, all of which had been paid for and wero the boast and pride of the State. The treneral did not attribute .ntentional falsehood to l)r. MeCnne in :ho editorial in question but rather thought that the Doctor had "unwitingly allowed himself to be imposed on through his zeal in the advocacy of his

party. General Kiee respectfully asked the Doctor to publish his communication in the /••iH'jitii.st

Doctor "could do to undo the great wrong'" that had been done by the orig:nal article. This Dr. MoUune refused to do. but returned tho article to General Kice with tho message that he declined to publish it, giving no reason for his refusal.

The General publishes in the Knnsns City

Journtil

UHIH,

an o|en letter which he

l.ad then indited to Dr. McCuno in which ho recites the above and referring to the above communication sent bv him in reply to Dr. McCnne's editorial says:

You doubtless read it (the reply) but you have not- had the courage to reiterate your charges against us or the honesty to-day in your columns that you were mistaken. Your editorad is the most diabolical attempt to intermeddle with the business interests of the State and destroy the credit of a community that tho "world has ever known. All the facta connected with this matter now clearly shows to me that your editorial which was wickedlv false and maliciously slanderous, wiis intentionally published for a base and devilish pnr|Mise -for its i«jlitical elTect, regardless of i:s injury to us. For your article ^ias greatly injured our credit it has prevented, and will prevent, many of our people from extending their loans it will cause the foreclosure of many mortgages, and will be tho direct cause of turning many men with their families out of doors, when otherwise thov might have weathered the storm. Your statement that the people of Kansas owed on real estate mortgages $232,000,000, was, I boiiovo, a malicious lie. Your statement, that they owed on chattel mortgages, deeds of trust, bills of sales, notes, etc., $232,000,000. was another mons'r ins lie. And your statement that "The Suite of Kansas was bankrupt and her [eople ruined," was

walls of a prison, and which ought to consign you to infamy." The General goes on to say that the total indebtedness of the State is less than $1,000,000 that the jxHipleof Kansas are neither bankrupt nor ruined and can not lxvomo so only from the frowns of providence that will blight their props, or bv the folly of political harlots, like Dr. McCune, who would utterly destroy credit for political argument to bolster party.

We ask our Alliance friends whether they are willing to uphold a cause which is sustained not only u]nm false dx?trines but by mendacity of tho worst character.

more witnesses were heard by the coroner Tuesday in the ease of the upposed death of Uobert Musgravo by the burning of a cabin where he was in hilling on the banks of the Wabash river near this city. Nine-tenths of the people here do not believe the bones found in the ruins arc those of Musgravo, the former real estate dealer. It is known to certain persons that Musgravo was staying at the cabin, aiul it is said tracks have been found leading away from the cabin through a corn Held to a spot some distance V. where the foot prints are such as to suggest that the person who made them might have walked that far and stopped to see if the cabin would burn. One of usgrave's conlidcutial friends, who had visited him in his hiding place. says they saw men prowling about the locality Sunday evening. Musgravo had a watch, and. while his friends do not know as a matter of fact that he had much money, they say he usually had considerable money oa his person. The chief reason for doubt to the bones being those of Musgravo is their complete incineration an.l tl.o failure to find any sign of his clothii or shoes, while silver K. of 1'. medal, with his name on it. was found lying beside the bones. It is beyond belief that the medal would not have melted. The only motive suggested here for the ruse is that he may have been carrying heavy life insurance, but whether or not this is true has not been learned. No one believes in the suicide theory. None of his relatives have yet claimed the bones.
