A PEIGHTFDL RUNAWAY.
Four Young Ladies Badly Scared and a Horse Ruined, Yesterday morning the daughter of l* rank Freicoe and three young lady friends started out in Mr. Freicoe's hucliboard for a day in the woods. It was a gay party and anticipation ran high until the horse concluded to run oil' and then excitement ran high. The horrid bruto took fright at a harmless bicycler who was desecrating the Sabhath and giving a snort of despair started down the street at break-neck speed. On the corner of Green and Wabash avenuo the buckboard was upset and all four of the young ladies spilled out under tlio croquet box and lunch baskets, while tho horse charged west on Wabash avenue. He fell at the corner of Washington street and becoming entangled in tho ruins of the h.irnoss and buckboard was captured. Tho young Indies were taken into the residence of Dr. Grillith and their wounds and bruises dressed. Fortunately none oT them were seriously injured although all were completely unnerved and badly scratched up. Tho horse was ruined, both tendons and an artery in one of his hind legs being cut.
Dr. lienefiel cared for him as best he could but stated that the valuable animal was practically done for. was a sad mess all around and the unhappy termination of what promised to be a happy day of sport.
A BOLD BURGLARY.
The Residenco of Mrs. J. M. Lane Raided on Sunday Mornmg, Sunday morning about 3 o'clock one of the most open and brazen burglaries ever perpetraU'd in this city was etTected at the residence of Mrs. ,1. M. Lane on east Wabash avenuo. About that hour Miss F.va Millen and the hired girl were both awakened by an unusual bustling about in tho kite-hen and dining room, lioth of them, however, supposed that, some ono of the family were sick and paid but little attention ti the noise. In tho morning, though, the kitchen door was found to bo wide ojion and it needed no thorough investigation to demonstrate tho fact that sundry and divers things wore missing. Tho rascally thieves must have eonio armed with clothes baskots as the amount of projxrty carried off was simply ap palling. Operations had chiolly boon contined to tho culinary department and a woulul depletion was there made manifest. Provisions were carried ofT with a reckless disregard of amount and consideration for tho owner's Sunday wel fare. If the burglars had slopped- with tho plundering of tho larder it would not havo been so bad, but in their eagerness to imiko the best of a good thing while the way lay open they also pur loined some old and very valuable silver warn which was highly prized by Mrs. Lane. Tho matter is in the hands of ho police.
A Wanderer.
Yesterday afternoon D. 1'. Smith captured a beautiful owl of an unknown species at his home south of the city. Tho bird alighted in one of his cedar trees evidently exhausted and was easily captured, dying toward night. Its back is of a beautiful gold and silver color, while its while breast is covered with spots of gold. Tho bird is supposed to havo wandered down from tin far north and Mr. Smith sent it. this morning to a taxerdermisl to havo it. mounted.
Council Meeting To-Night.
At the regular mooting of tho Com mon Council to-niglit much important business will bo transacted. Thousands of dollars worth of work on street improvement will bo lot, including the
boulovarding of east Wabash avenuo, tho bouldoring of Washington,Main and Market and sidewalks on I'luiu, Mill and Market streets. Other business will also come under consideration and a hot session is expected.

The Board of Review Criticise 1 To liie ICOItor of The Journal. Now that the County Board of lieview has mado its report, let us examine the report a little to BOO what has been done. Tho personal property of Crawfordsviile has been reduced per
cent. Very well. That is treating all men alike in tho city. Hut let, us look at Union township. The Hoard says tho realty is too high by $7 an acre on an average, hence it says after equalizing between individuals take off $7 per acre all around. Now lets see: Mr. A. has SO acres appraised at $"() per acre, which equals $1,000 §7 per acre off equals SIH per acre or 11 per cent off. Mr. ]{. has 80 acres appniiMyl at $25 per acre or $2,000 $7 |«t acre off or 28 por cent. C's land is valued at $12.50 per acre in tho samo way will give 50 por cent, off and that valued lit $7 ]er acre will bo Now where is equality if ono man's assessment is reduced II P°r oent. another 28 and another 50 and soon? But the law defining the duty of the Board, SIH 115. says: "To make such changes as may be necessary to equalize the same totween townships or divisions of townships ami to determine tho rate jer cent, to lx added or subliacted, in order to make just equalization." Has the Board done this? Has it not mado as many por cents, off as there aro ditiorent values of land? If Union township land was valued too high, then tako off certain per cent, as was done in the city, and it would havo been just and right and according to law. But the plan adopted by the Board seems to be neither just nor according to law EXAMI: KU.
Prevented a Panic.
osterday at tho colored camp' meeting the ceremonial of distributing parts of tho fatted calf to returning prodigals was observed. A tabic* loaded with choice lKMf and bread was prepared and tit tho word a largo crowd began to surgo up after an allowance. So great became tho throng and press that tho table and contents wore threatened with being trampled under foot. The chief dispenser of viands was equal to the occasion, however, and rising upon the table called out in stentorian tones. /Keep back from the table all you folks or ou'P got grease 011 your clothes. The admonition had the desired etl'ect and the surging mass fell back in horror. They were all attired in their Sun day best.
Jacob's Joke.
Jake Freed, the rnmseller of New Market, is on the war-path. He says he is being persecuted for righteousness, sake and he doesn't intend to stand it any longer, so he doesn't. He complains that ono of tho minors to whom he sold liquor is 2 years old, and not a minor at all, and that the man who mado the affidavit knew so at the time ho mado it. .Take says that when he is cleared anil vindicated in the Brown township courts ho will go in and make it everlastingly warm for those who havo taken up arms against him.
The Band Concert.
The streets wero jammed with people Saturday evening and presented an oldtime nppearaniui as tho smiling young ladies and smirking young moil brushed by each other in the crowd taking advantage of the press to whisper sweet nothings. The band played its sweetest melodies and showed that there wero 110 Hies in its immediate vicinity. F.voryono was highly pleased and it is to bo hoped that not anothor warm Saturday ovoning will pass without tho band discoursing pleasant music on the court house corner.

A MAN OF STRENGTH.
The l-iirquatftd IYiitu Performed by an Elslitaenth Century Sainaon.
Tho first thoator manager of Berlin, Johanr. Karl von Eckonhcrg, WUB tho so-called "man of strength" who showed himself nearly two hundred years ago, first as a Juggler, then as athlete. Of his Ufo little Is known except ns In his career as theater manager, OA bo was tho founder of tho first Berlin theater, no was extensively writton of, and an artlclo nnder tho title of "An Athleto of tho Eighteenth Century," puhllshod somo years ago and recently unoarthed, gives an interesting account of his prowoss, as follows:
By an athloto of tho eighteenth century wo do not mean tho l'rlnco Frederick August, of Saxony, King of Poland, commonly called August tho Strong, who could knock off tlio heart of an ox with ono stroke of his sword, and hesidos distinguished himself In all kinds of reBpoctable performances of strength, hut another Itorcules, who would have wrapped tho strong August around his llttlo finger if such a thing would hove been permitted. This man was tho athloto Joliann Karl von Eckenberg, who in tho twenties and thirties of the last century showed his productions of strength tn publio. lie was the most stately of all gymnasts, and was born in tho town of llarzgorodo, and, out of respcct to his native town, ho called himself for a time on his bill posters Samson Hercules, Harzmann.
It bordors on tho fabulous what his contemporaries rolatod of his romarkoblo exhibitions of strength. Ho broko on anchor ropo as if It wero ordinary thread iron nails ond bolts ho turned playfully between his fingers into scrows a cannon plpo ho carried around as if it wero baby. Ills tooth woro as strong as iron. Ho hit Into a piocc of oak wood then a strong cart-horso wna harnessed to it. In spito of tho horso being urged on, it was unable to pull tho stick out of tho juggler's mouth or to pull tho othloto from tlio plooo whero ho stood. A bench mado of wood, sixteen feet long, ho grasped with his teeth by ono ond and carried It around, while a trumpeter, blowing his Instrument, sat on tho other end.
His arm was moro poworful than his tooth. IIo spread out his hands, on oacii ono was placed a bottlo of ivlno, then a ropo was attached to each wrist and to oach ropo there woro threo mon from tho audlenco who pulled with all their might, so as to tnako it imposslhlo for tho Ilorctiles to convoy tho wlno to his mouth. All their zeal was without avail, as tho arms of tho gymnast bent themselves irresistibly, and brought tho Jug to his mouth without spilling a drop of wino.
IIo generally saved his grandest performance of Btronth until tho close of tho exhibition, no ascended a scaffold of beams, under which was a platform of thick planks fastoned on strong chains. A trumpeter mounted on a horse, clad as a herald, rodo upon tho platform and played his tuno, Tho Horc.ulofi then took a ploco on tho point of tho soaffolding, held a glass of wlno in ono hand and with tho other, by means of tho chains, lifted tho heavy platform, tho horso and tho trumpotor high up from tho floor, and for a llttlo while held tho whole weight, tho trumpeter shrilly blowing a tune, whilo tho athloto drank tho glass of wine, at tho samo time giving toast to tho magistrate and tho citizens of tho city In which ho happened to bo staying.
When llerr von Eckenborg liecamo older his power gradually left him, therefore ho gave up the herculean business and b' came chief theater manager of Berlin, whero ho for somo timo possessed two show booths, which, however, did not bring him as largo an lncomo as did his exhibition of strength. But when ho had tho largo lncomo ho did not know how to savo. llo had a competitor, l'otor 1111 fording, who had a show booth with privileges, and at tho samo timo was a practical Joker and clown under the naino of I'antalon do Uisognosi. Provoking quarrels with this man emhlttorod tho llfo of tho "man of strength," so that ho took to drinking, which was his ruin at lost. His numerous creditors seized both his booths with all belongings, complotoly impoverishing tho celebrated Hercules, who died In tho year 1754.—London Spectator.
