An Act of Vandalism.

The spirit of destructiveness which inspiris some peoplo is impossible to fathom. The other night some vandal lisoncd the tish in Ashor Wert's pond north of the city. The following morning Mr. Wert picked up Mil line lisli which were floating on the water and scooped large numbers of small ones out of the pond. The poisoning was irobablv done by the administration of tish berries and the matter is now in the hands of the police. If the rascal is caught lie should receive the worst punishment possible. lluv, R, S, Inglis Gives His Cougrngatiou a Pleasant Surprise Yestuiday. "When the pursontook his text

He looked so very much perplexed." 'J he congregation of the First Presbyterian church tiled into their places as usual yesterday and the bustle of fans alone disturbed the quietude of the leaceful ,Sabbath morn. It was a warm day and when the organ began to plav, and the choir (lied in and the young pastor ascended the platform the good people settled back in the cushioned pews and prepared for an hour's enjoyment. Hev. H. S. Inglis prix-wdod gallantly through the preliminaries until it came to the announcements. Mere he began to waver, a social was announced and the prayer meeting, and the audience began to stretch their necks and wondered what embarrassed him so. Just about the time that several good old men had become resigned to hearing themselves churched the cause of the pastor's embarrassment was made evident by another announcement, which was a cordial invitation to the congregation to attend his wedding to Miss May Pierce, of Minneapolis, Minn., on September 1. Il was a most original and pleasant way Mr. Inglis took for announcing his approaching marriage, and was highly appreciated by his congregation. Miss Pierce is a daughter of ex-Senator Pierce, of South Dakota, and is Raid to be a most charming and estimable young lady. The people of Crawfordsville will welcome her most warmly to a Imine in this city and Tun JoritNAi, predicts for the young couple a long, happy ami prosperous married life.

lu a Filthy Hole.

Poor old "Sassafras George" Carson was sent out to the poor farm some time ago and has been there ever since suffering with rheumatism. Health Ollicer Keegan called at the farm Saturday and found the poor old man in a perfectly filthy condition, lie was jammed up in one of the outside cells and had evidently had no attention, His person was vile and tho walls of his cell damp and foul. He was suffering greatly and all for want of jiroper attention. This neglect of an old anl infirm man does not speak well for the new management of tho county asylum. Patients should receive all possible attention and when age is coupled to their infirmities neglect becomes a positive crime. Ex-sa-loon keeper Cioben would do well to brace up. lie has been in oflice too short a time and has a past, of too bad odor to begin to neglect his duty now Dr. Keegan ordered a reform and il Ooben does not give it he should 1 given a free ride through a horse pond.

A Stiff Price.

Satuiday afteii.uon was a time of exilement in Wayn town. There was a ood crowd in town and everyone wm talking about the rise in the price of wheat. When the talk was at a fever heat Morris llerzog, "the Hebrew merchant," ap]H'ar il at the door of his esa is an a a of I is voice that he would buy all tho wheat in Montgomery county for a dollar a bushel, provided that it would be delivered within a month. He made pile of contracts at once and oven bought several good lots at one dollar and two cents. This morning ho offered several of the large farmers 31.02 for their wheat and one man holding 2,000 bushels was offered SI.03. It was a boom for Wavnetown.
