"I was President of a national hank at OshUnsh. \Vis.,\vith aeapital of fifty thousand rlol.ar^ ami four hundred thousand dollars deposits. I felt assured that if the ^tvdietion was eorreet t.her(» was :rouhle ahead. arriv»»d h«n:)e in the *v«Miin«r at one^ calh^d the ilireetors VJijx'ther, told thejn tlie news and a«lrised that our li'inds he at oiiee eonvert?d into eunvney in order to he prepared :or a 'run* upon the hank. Th-'y agreed to it. I offered to loan them several thousand of my own bonds, and so we (unnamed to £ft together between three hundred thousand dollars and four hundred thousand dollars ofe bonds. I packed theni into my j^ripaml the same ni^rht left for niieapo. *\\s soon as the banks opened in the morning I went the rounds, trying to ?.\ehanye the bonds for currency. Nobody would touch them. They were afraid. They wen* in our fix exactly.
They wanted all the currency they could lay their hands on. So without waiting any longer I took the train for New Yor!r. "I went to the bank with which we lid business, and somewhat to my surprise they agreed to take all tin? bonds in exuhanffe for currency. They thought then* was monev enouirh in New Vork to help the country out. The banker, were cr» th°n s^ndinjf currency to Chicago. As it turned out. they were not as well oiV as they thought tliev were, and I was very lucky in my early deal. **\Wn. in less tV»an an hour tny trrip wasemptiedof the bond^and lilleilwitli currency. 1 went up to mv hotel and paid mv bill. While waiting 1 bought an afternoo:i paper. Tito first news I struck was a dispatch saying that every bank in t'hieajro had suspcndcl payment. 1 lenev.' what the elVcct would

If I sold only part, that 1 was sick but should start for home. If 1 was successful. that I was ipiit:j well. I telegraphed: 'Never so well in my life' and left J' »r »ino. "I reached home about 7 o'clock in the morning. The day previous there had been some pressure on tin* bank, but depositors had been assured that 1 was on my way back from Now York, and that as soon as I arrived depositors would be paid without do'ay. Un receipt of my tolerrram they were told that I would be in on the morniujrtrain. and that as soon a* the batik opened depositors would be welcome. "Well. I went the bank and made ready. There was a narrow table in the space behind the counter which stood up against the wall. On thi we piled the ledgers and other bijr bank* books, making a pile about two feet hi«rh and as many in length. We covered these books with the currency, and on top of that what coin we had so as to make it look like a solid pil.x of money. Wo ha«l enough, anyway, to mootall claims, hut we wanted, if possible, to prevent run. "In the meantime we sent out some of the bank men and friends, of the hank, who went blowinrr and talking all over town that 'Sawyer hud pot back with a cartload of money.' "Well, when the bank opened thirty or forty people came .running* in with checks in their hands. When they saw that pile of money it. staggered them.
Some stood their ground notwithstanding and tfot- their money, but mot, of them looked' sheepish, chucked their cheeks in their pockets, pretended that they had come in on some other business, or sneaked out without a word. The news soon spread, and although fifty thousand dollars was checked out. the whole of it and more was redoposited before night. The depositors at the other banks began drawing out and putting in with us ami threatened to run them out. "So we determined to put a stop to that and not have a panic In the town at all. We conferred with the other banks, and it was agreed that it should bo announced that 'Sawyer had brought money enough home to let the other banks have all they needed.' This did the business, and no run was made on any of us.".- v- ..

About lift ,- years UfSo a British physician maintained that it must. K- considered questionable if the existence of centenarians had ever been established bv sullicieut proofs. Modern statistics have definitely removed that doubt. According to the census of 1S!»0 I'russia had a year ago eighty-six centenarians, including twenty-three persons who had attained an age of 10.% years and upward. In Austria (including Hungary) 138 persons had passed their 100th year in France, 72 in Russia, 'JOS. The largest number of Prussian centenarians are found iu Silesia aud in the Baltic province, while in Russia longevity seems to increase southeast of Moscow, a circumstance due either to the free and easy life, comparatively speaking, of the southern Cossacks, or to the salubrity of the Caucasian highlands, with their large percentage of abstinent Mussulmans.

The Corean wears his hair braided down his back, it being considered unholy to cut it, or to even wear it loosely arouud the neck and shoulders. After he gets married, and not before, the law permits him to wear it curled up on top of his head. To tell a married Corean that he ought to wear his hair down is equivalent to telling him that his wife is the better man of the two.
