A "PINT" TOR THE 00URT. l)oes A Wife Hold An IntereBt In Timber On Real Estate?
Sometime! sinco Elijah P. Ilallott, of Alamo vicinity, sold some timber from his farm contrary to tho wishes of his bettor half, Rebecca. She raised a vigorous kick which was unavailing and Lija informed her that ho would do as he pleased that ho was boss of that rancho that ho would sell the entire gastod timber output of the farm if ho wanted to and she might kiok as high as she wanted to. He didn't caro if tlie toe of her Cinderella liko slipper went through tho moon, ho would let tho ax resound and tho saw buzz. In fact help yourself, old lady, if you can," was his decision. Mrs. Ilallett, not used to being thwarted, took tho ground that as her lord and master could not dispose of his real estate without she signed the deed and knowing thnt tho courts had decided that timber was considered a part cf tho realty, she argued that she had an interest therein and that Elijah should bo forced to disgorge one third of the money he socured for the timber, to her, to add to tho woight of tho stocking in the lower bureau drawer. So coming to tho city she employed H. D. Vancleave to bring suit for tho recovery of tho widow's third from tho grasping Elijah. The case was duly brought and duly tried. Much aloquonco was expended in its argninent, but the court decidod adversely to Mrs. Ilallett, and Elijah was mado as happy as she was forlorn, but rolling up her alcoves she has come aftor him again and will carry tho owe to tho court of last resort. Mr. YAHcloavo is preparing a brief now for the Appellate Court whoro tho thing will probably bo settled forever.

Tho Commander of the Tenth Indiana Battery An Enthusiastic Missourian. At the Encampment at Detroit last wook the writer mot Capt. W. A. Naylor, brother of Dr. I. E. Q. Naylor, of Darlington, and who commanded the Tenth Indinna Battery during the last years of tho war. Soon after he was mustered out he wont to southern Missouri and settled in Ripley county. Land being cheap he bought a largo body and held it for a rise. The rise came and he is now in ailluent circumstances. When ho went to that part of Missouri the people, his noighlxrs, were all rebels most of them having served in tho Confodonito army. The Bchool distriot in whieh ho lived was nino miles long by six miles wide. Ho at onco entered upon a campaign of education, tho first thing being to call a school meeting to take steps to build a school house. He succeeded in securing an attendance of four men, but two of them not being householders wore not voters under the law. Tho mooting was organizod, a tax was levied to build a school house and the machinery for a school set in motion. Now instead of one school house there aro six in tho territory comprising that one distil it, all supporting excellent schools. Wlieu ho went there but five Republican votes could be found in the county. At tho last elec tion tho Republicans came within five votos of carrying it. By tho next elotj tion thoy expect to go in with a whoop. Tho Captain, like the veterans of the war gonorally, begins to give evidence of increasing ago, but in spirit ho is as young as ho was a quarter of a century ago.

More Work of the lightning. Yesterday afternoon during theetorin tho large hay barn on tho farm of William Snydor, a few miles northwest of tho city on Black Crook, was struck by a bolt of lightning and destroyed together with its contents. It was full of hay, and also contained a self binder nnd other farming tools. Tho loss will aggregate sovoral hundred dollars. No insnranco.

Prospective Difficulties Among the Colored Population. The face of the moon is beginning to assume a crimson appearance and tho blood will soon begin to drip, all on tlie account of the weakness a certain wollknown gentleman of color has dovoloped for a certain white woman. ThiB white damsel has stolen the affections of this Linky pated Lothario from his wife, and tho fire which once burned on tho altars of home have boon extinguished by tho white chnrmor. In fact I10 iB in tho hands of the evil spirits. She has hoodoood him in great style, homo has 110 attrauti'ms for him any more, and when hints are dropped by bis partner that he should reform he iiios into a passion and smashes the furniture. Then he departs to bask in tho smiles of tho now Cleopatra. His wife then follows his trail and upon Beveral occasions in the still hours of tho night she has dragged him forth, not habited for parlor car traveling and by threats of calaboose and jail has marched him home, lie thinks ho is badly treated and when forced to stay at home sleeps with a rusty pistol under his pillow, while tho imp of jealousy perches on tho bed post. He swears there has been a man in the house nnd "Shoah as I gits eyes on im, Pll kill im." His wife, a most estimable colored woman has the sympathy of tho neighbors in her trouble with her recreant lord who sometimes drives her away from homo by his bloody threats. Last night she loft homo because ho was smashing the furnituro and raising merry Bheol and stayed all night with a neighbor. Tho White Caps will get him it I10 don't watch out. Thoro has I won some talk of dressing him down with apple Bprouts among tho neighbors and his only safe plan is in reformation—and forgetful ess of his white dulcina.
INHUMANITY.
A Case Which Demands the Attontion of the S. P. 0. A. A caso of barbarity and cruelty of dumb animals comes from tho Black Crook vicinity which demands attention from tho Society for the Prevention of Crnolty to Animals, and a vigorous prosecution, which would servo as a lesson to any who fool inclined to let the devilish depravity which possosseB them to do likewise. A young man of that vicinity had become possessed of a horse. The animal was a good one but on account of his not being properly fed became poor. Instead of procuring good pasture for it and caring for it as a man should, to avoid the expense he turned tho animal out to wander up and down tho parched and dusty road and to live if ho could on the dnst covered and scorched grass in tho fence Comoro. Tho horse could not live, and having no water got down in tho middle of a hot road last Saturday. Word was sent to tho young mnn that his horse was down and to come and attend to it at once. Ho failed to BIIOW up and the poor animal lay in the hot du6t in the middle of tho road all day Sunday without 11 drop of water, and tho sun pouring down upon him. Ho would struggle to get up until exhausted and then fall back and give forth tho most pitoous noigliB at every Bound. In the evening he died. Tho death of the horse under such circumstances is case of cruelty in tho extreme not only on the part of the owner but of those who Baw his sufferings and failed to relievo them. A gentleman who saw the horse as he drove by thinks that a drink of water would havo revived him. A few prosecutions in such cases would do a world of good to tho brutes which are so maltreated bp their ownors.
A Name For Helen.
Helen M. Gougar has announced her intention of going on the warpath and dangling tho scalp of Major McKinloy at her bolt and tho Fort Wayno Gazelle snggost8 that a turn le plume of a taking character would bo tho thing. Here is tho timely suggestion: "Let her take Bomo appropriate IIOII itc plume. What shall it bo? Voorhees has appropriated tho titlo of the "Tall Sycamore of tho Wabash." She can't have that. As she hails from Tip]ociinoe county, whoro tho Wabash receives the two tributaries, tho Tippecanoe imd Wildcat, wo would suggest tho "Wild Cat of Tippecanoe," or "The Prickly Nettlo of the Wabash." With some such taking title sho would swoep tho Buckeye State liko a wild lire, and probably elect McKinley by a phenomenal mnjority. Wo aro inclined to favor tho Nettle as tho most appropriate representative. Wo don't know of any purpose tho nettlo sorvos oxcopt that which its name suggests."
How They Did It in Tippecanoe, The Tippecanoe County Board of Review has finished its work and from the Lafayotto Courier wo glean tho following item in roferonco to its final report: "The Board of lloview has placed the additional per cent ujjon tho various townships as follows: Lanramie, 20 por cent! Randolph, GO Union, 40 Wea, 20 Perry, 50 Shelby, 50. In all the others the assessor's reports were jermittod to remain as thoy were returned.
