THEB. OF E.
Its Work Will Be Oontinued Over For Another Week. Tho progrnmmo mapped out by the County Bourd of Review wus too long to be completed lust Saturday, and hence tho work will be continued over for another weok before tho final announcement will bo mado. From all that can bo learnod the Board has had pretty Eerions timo in equalizing the valuations and getting rid of all the inequalities which showed up on a critical examination of the returns of the Assessors. There have been some few assessments raised where there seemed to havo boon a too great discrepancy in values between adjoining property, but theso are the exception rather than the rule. Generally there has been whole sale reductions of individual assessment and equalizations made which to the Board eeemod fair and juBt. When all this iB done there will lien horizontal reduction mado all along the lino. Tho

from tho last amounted to something over 85,000,000, making tho total assessment of the county $20,000,000 in round numbers, as against 815,000,000 for tho previous assessment. Tho Board is of tho opinion that thoir adjustment will come as nearly giving universal satisfaction as it would bo possible to do, under the circumstances. It will at least they think have tho merit of pleasing the public because of a reduction in valuation to a basis more equitable than that arrived at by the Assessors.
A Sunday Drunk.
Patrick Brennan was brought into the presence of the Mayor this morning on a charge of drunk and disorderly. Patrick had loaded up on tamaraok Saturday evening and kept adding to tho load until he became convinced that ho could solve tho Irish problem in a few worda. He came in contact with another gentleman of Irish extraction, who had also boon viewing tho world through the bottom of a glass and who thought ho was as smart as Pat. In the argument about Parnoll, Dillon, O'Brien and Kittio O'Shoa theso two got into a wordy war which soon brought blood to tho surface and Pat was captured while the stranger got away. The prisoner was very humblo this morning and assured the Mayor that tho officers were mistaken, as ho had not been under the "infloonco" for throo years. Tho case stuck, however, with tho usual consoquences.
Galled to Depart.
The Voodersburg News says that Rev. J. W. Carney's congregation, when they heard of hiB late attempt to drink all the fire water in Crnwfordsville, has called for his resignation and will bounce him uncormoniously does he doay turning it in. Elder Maxwell, of thiB city, says Carney is a member of no church, but stylos him a "veritable re1 gious dude, a perfect wind-bag dis. gusting with hie everlasting talkee tulkce and saying nothing, that he is merely grazing at largo upon the Lord's commons attached to no flock," but exercising his vocabulary whorever op. portunity offers. Mr. Maxwell also says that Carney was dismissed from the Newlight conference soveral years since, and has been a religious bushwhacker ever since.
Tho Tenth Regimental Beumon. Tho fourteenth annual reunion of the Tenth Regiment will be held in this city on Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19. Handsome invitations have been printed and sent out to the members of this gallant organization and tho boys anticipate a happy timo.

A LAM'S LICENSE.
Superintendent Zook Interviewed On The Subject. Considerable talk has been indulged in in certain quarters in roforenco to the refusal of Superintendent Zook to isa ie a teacher's license to A Lam Moore teacher of music in the pnblic schools of this city. To put tho reasons for the refusal THE JOURNAL went to headquarters und interviewed tho Superintendent on the subject. Mr. J5ook said: "Yes I rofuBed to issue Mr. Mooro a license without passing the required examination. Heretofore it has boon the custom of County Superintendents to issue a license to Mr. Mooro without his passing un examination tlioy giving him a grade which would entitle him a license had he made it in a regular way. I will do nothing of that sort. I will only issue a license on a regular examination. If I do anything else I will bo violating the law, and I do not purpose to do that knowingly. I rofused to grant Moore a license last year without an examination but did tako a teacher's licence blank and wrote in red ink in the text that I knew Mooro to bo qualified to teach music. There were no gradeB set forth, QB showing thnt ho had passed an examination in the eight oommon school branches, which he refused to do, holding that as other Superintendents hod issued him license I was compelled to follow tho precedent set. Tho law dofines my duties and Bays for what license shall issue and proficiency in music and ability to toach it does not come under that head. In fact music is not a common school branch and tho hiring of a music teacher is not in accordance with tlio law, if he is paid out of tho regular tuition fund. If ono is hired to teach music, stenography, penmanship, elocution or any of the dozen other extra studies, ho must be paid out of some other fund than the tuition fund. If that hind is touched for anything save to pay teachers of the eight common school branches as provided by law, Bomo one is likely to got into trouble."
Tho probabilities are that there will be no music taught in tho city schools this winter, for tho reason that the special school fund has run short. The Trustees have taken up bonds until tho school debt of the city is no more, but in doing this they have diminished tho fund until there will likoly not be enough to reach the demands made upon it. While music may be cut off the city tax-payer will have tho satisfaction of knowing that the interest on the school debt has been cut off.
A Junction Spat.
In the Mayor's court of equal and exact justice was this morning arraigned Andy Plunkett, of tho Junction vicinity, charged with assaulting and battering hia Bister, Mrs. Campbell, during a little war of talk they had in tho quiet family circle yesterday. It seems that Andy and Mrs. Campbell's bettor holf had ongnged in on argument in which tho better half was getting tho worst of it, when with a womnn's proverbial lack of judgment in such things, she thought it was her turn to "chip in," which she did. This proceeding so riled the valliant Mr. Plunkett that he proceeded to chastise her with a club, in a very unbrotherly manner. This was the cause of Andrews presence in a court of justice, where he was disposed of with neatness and dispatch.
