THE HEADING CIRCLE.
The programme for the State Farmer's Heading Circle which will meet at Indianapolis, August 14, in the rooms of the State Board of Agriculture, [is as follows:
The Farmer's Heading Circle a Necessity, by Hon. James A. Mount—Discussion by Hon. Aaron Jones, Dr. E. H. Collins, and Hon. Milton Truster.
The social feature of the Heading Circle Work, by Miss Kntherine Callaway— Discussion by J. N. Babcock, and Mrs Virginia C. Mtr.dith.
How to Make the Reading Circle Work Attractive, by Mrs. Laura D. AVorley—Discussion by Prof. Latta, Mrs. J. A. Mount, and Mrs. Busiek. The State Farmers's Reading Circle is a movement which has the hearty endorse" ment of THE JOUKNAI., and we are glad to see that Montgomery county is to be well represented at the meeting at Indianapolis. It is unfortunate but a fact revealed by the late census that the majority of farmers have few or no books It is also true that a great many farmers do not take a good magazine, and some are found who exist without a newspaper. It is this condition of affairs that the State Farmer's Reading Circle seeks to change and improve.
THE FAIR.
The fair is an institution which proba blv belongs to everybody in tho„countv and everyone should lake deep interest in its success. At least one day should be spent at the exhibition each year and everyone having anything of more than ordinary importance should enter tho same, not alone for the premium, bnt to aid in swelling the exhibition, all Bhould thus assist the reputation of fair would not only be sustained but largely increased. In this connection it would not be out of place to hint that the property owned by the association should be taxed as low as possible or entirely exempt. This would work no hardship upon anyone as all are more or less interested and all benefited.
Churches, colleges and other institutions are exempt, for the reason they are considered a public benefaction and rightly^ too, and why not oxtend exemption to the fair on tho same principal
THE faces seen the farmers'procession here last Saturday are never seen at the meetings of the Farmer's Council. The members of the Farmer's Council were none of them in the procession. The one class of farmers seek to better their condition by uncertain political methods, the other by the practical methods of discussion of scientific farming nnd experimenting on the same.

SCIENTIFIO DEDUCTIONS.
THE average laborer wears out five ounces of muscle a day. EsrERiMEXT has shown that when coal is burnt in an open grate from one to throo per cent, of the coal escapes in the form of unburnt solid particles, or "soot," and about ten per cent, is lost in the form of volatile compounds of carbon.
IT has recently been observed that when liquid carbonic acid is allowed to escape into a stout canvas bag in tho dark, and by its expansion to freeze into a snowy mass, the effect is accompanied by a pale, greonish violet light and electric sparks.
