JEWELS IN THE SEA.

An Incident In (li« Ufa of tin, Austrian Kv-ICmprc** of Mexico. Sixty fWl below tin* surfmv of tlio sea, says tho »V\v York Ucronl'-r. at tin1 fool of the rocks where Sehh»s Miramar is l.milt. ropes of prieeless pearls are hunk in an iron eajre. They atv the property of tin? now lrmentel Kuipress Chariot te of Mexien. The mi-, fortunate arehihiehess wore these pearK her husband's lirst jrift to her (lav anl ni-^ht around her beautiful throat, until her return from the disastrous Mexican expedition whieh cost her husbands Hfo and her own reason.

The irems sickened and lost their lovelv orient when she lay sick unto death at Vienna, after having received the news of Kinperor Maximilian's tnitric end. Thev suddenly turned a dull waxy yellow, and tin* jewelers who were consulted as to the best means of restoring them to their former tint declared that the only way of doinf so was to lower them to the bottom of the sea for an indefinite period.

Sehloss Miramar. as is well known, was the creation and pride of the illfated archduke, who. led away by his wife's insatiable ambition, left this par* adisc on earth to undertake a hopeless enterprise, which he regretted from the lirst moment that he set foot on the soil of Mexico. Perched on the edge of a rocky promontory, ami built entirely of the purest white marble, the fairy-like palace, with its glorious foreground of sapphire-blue sea and its background of jjreen hills and feathery palms, is beyond description either by prn or brush. From the windows ami t"rraees one looks down upon the deep water full eighty feet below, a water so transparent and pure that the eye can penetrate throu^n its twenty fathoms and follow the capricious and delicately-tinted submarine vegetation growing far down 011 the golden sand.

Th* gardens, rising in a gentle slope behind tin? castle, are a mass of blossoming llowers and of rarest trees and bushes, while fountains as magnificent as those of Versailles refresh the air in every direction.

It is to this unique ^laee that the ail* ing pearls have been taken, and it is reported that they are gradually recovering their beauty after their bath of over twenty-live years in the calm waters which once reflected the dark beauty of their fair wearer.

They removed the window casings, entered the cabin and remained for a week. The chief of the party by accident met the proprietor of the cabin about a week afterward, who asked: *'Did you into my house?" The chief replied that he did not know. After the Indian gave a description of the cabin, the surveyor told him his party did enter the cabin. The Indian said: "Delate nicka sick turn turn." (I'm very sorry it was not right). The surveyor continued: ••You were absent when I came to your house in a heavy storm. Would you have me sit upon your doorstep with your eaves dripping on my head because you were absent?" It struck the Indian a* I expeeted, and after a moment's deliberation he said: •'No, no, sir: you did right, and I am glad that I was able to afford you shelter."

After this satisfactory adjustment he made the Indian a present of two dollars and lifty cents, and he was the happiest Indian I ever saw. At the same time the storekeeper on the reservation was obliged keep a six-shooter and a club at hand to defend himself and drive bargains. That is, in my opinion, a statement of the Indian question from one end of this state to tho other.^
