Mrs. Byers Heard Prom.
Mrs. Susan Byers, tho wife of constable John Bvcrs, replies to tho manifesto of Luther Monroe which was published in last evening's JOITHNAL. Luther's Sunday clothes have caused no little controversy and Mrp. Byers thus answers Luther for insinuating that she was sore because she did not get to play tho organ at tho colored Baptist church:
To tho Editor Tire .TOL'KNAT,: DEAII Silt:-—I see Mrs. Bvers'name mentioned in last evening's .TOCKKAI, in connection with tho altercation between Mr. John Byers' and Monroe's business. I have nothing whatever to do with it. think Monroo ought to pay his debts and let 1110 alone, and as far as that organ is concerned I play all I want to play. I think Monroo ought to keep church affairs sej mite and distinct from wordly affairs for I have not spoken a dozen words since ho has been in Orawfordsville. Becanso I knew him before he camo here, that ho was of high character and always sorry when anything like that occurs.

Nineteen Miles Free.
A. P. Ramsey received word from Lebanon last evening to the effect that tho board of commissioners of Boono county had mot yesterday and granted tho right of way to tho gas syndicate to pipo gas along tho pike for ninotoen miles freo of charge. Tho same communication informed Mr. Ramsey that Supt. McAlovy was meeting with all success purchasing tho right of way from private individuals.
A Valuable Stove.
Dr. J. N. Talbot, of Alamo, has a stove which is a reliablo weather indicator and boats a barometer all hollow. When tho doctor lights his firo in the morning the stove at once gives a perfect prophecy of tho day's weather. If it is not going to rain during tho day that stove will Emoko invariably, but just so sure as it is going to rain the stovo will draw perfectly and no smoke will bo emitted into tho room. Whenever tho doctor's family contemplates a picnic or a blackberry ing excursion they always rise early and light a fire in tho stove. If it smokes they know that it is not going to rain and start off feeling perfectly safo. The stove smoked this rning and the doctor left hiB umbrella at homo when he camo to town.
Effeoted Her Capture.
John Byers, tho warm-hearted colored constable, went out to Madison township yesterday after Mrs. Alice Whiteeotton who stands charged with tho terrible crime of trespass. Mrs. Whiteeotton was out blackborrying but tho wily John hid out in the bushes until slio appeared when he swooped down and caught her, David Thowlis, Mrs. Whitecotton'i father, waxed exceeding wroth and was going to rend Mr. Byers from limb to limb, but when John drew tho insignia of tho low he fell back abashed. Mrs, Whiteeotton wanted to know what would become of her children if she were car ried off to jail, but tho doughty con stable in default of a better answer said he hod no warrant for them and conse quently did'nt care. After some loud and spirited conversation tho whole del ogation wont over to Now Richmond where Thowlis and W. D. Jones gave bond of $100 for the appearance of Mrs. Whiteeotton beforo Ramsey next Tnes day. llltOWX'S VALLEIL.

SPOIDE BY AMMONIA.
The Terrible Agony Does Not Prevent Its Use. No poison brings death with moro maddening agony thnn ammonia, but that fact does not seem to discourage tho Buicide. The man Harrowitz, who deliberately swallowed a fatal doBo of tho dnig in New York recently, is only one of the many who havo gone tho nmmonia route to death in spite of tho oxcmciating pnin. Dr. Blytho has recorded thirty cases of ammonin poisoning in the sm all London district of which he is health officer Professor Mitchell mentions twen'y two c.30F,nnd four hove occurred during tho Bhort time Dr. Jenkins has been connected with tho coroner's office in New York.
Cases of slow poisoning from ammonia are of constant occurrence among men who work in its nmniifno tnro, or even in decomposing substances which give it off in considerable quantities. Ammonin, slowly and from day to day taken into the system, causes tho complexion to lose its freshness, and the skin of men who get heavily impregnated with it has a disagreeable blotched and discolored appearance.
Taken into the stomach from day to day in even tho small qui ties used to adulterate food, such as baking powder, it not only injures tho complexion but attacks tho lining of tho stomach, and is the source of much general ill health.
The recent rapid increase in tho use of ammonia for various purposos, and tho consequent increase in its manufac ture, have mado it ono of ll:e most easily obtained poisons and, although everybody is familiar with it in some form, there is surprising amount of ignoranco of its dangerous qualities. Its use as an adultorant in any food preparation is simply a crime, and as a crime should be punished.
