Wo iloHiro to cull tho attention of our rcuikTs to the poems which iippenr every ilny on tho second page of TiiK.IoriiNAi.. Thoy are reallv "gems of verso" from the best poets both living and dead and will amply repay reading. Among the poets whose production liavo appeared and will appear aro James Whiteomb Uiley, Cliarlos Kingsley, J. O. Holland Will Carleton, John Bovlo O'Reilly, Joaijnin Miller and others.
Orenn Bubbles Came Out.
John Edwards, of tho Edwards llonso says ho was once bitten by a mail dog. lie lost no time but hustled across the 1'iiuntry forty miles to where a mad stone was kept. It adhered to his arm for seven hours. It was afterward boiled in sweet milk for one hour to get the poison out and it had fairly gotten warm before green and poisonous bubbles began to issuo from the stone, thus demonstrating beyond the shadow of a doubt that the stone did draw the vrnom from tho wound.
.: Is Marriage a Failure. What is one man's meat is another man's poison, and tho same things appear to different men in different lights. This morning in tho Clerk's ofiiee was presented a curious 1ml by no moans an unusual spectacle. At tho front table in the room stood Joseph White making application for a marriage license, while at the back table stood Mrs. John Foreman, with her attorney Judge Sellar, filing a divorce suit. Major Foote dipping onco in tho ink wroto out tho marriage license and in almost every case the. women file the divorce suits It's a naughty world but tho balance of virtue seems to bo in favor of the ladies.
A Large and Lively Meeting, X: At tho regular meeting of tho P. O. S. A. last night three persons were initiated in the Red Degree, and several propositions for membership were received. H. J. Billman was elected treas-, nrer to fill tho unexpired term of Parker Willis, resigned. J. T. Layman was appointed »".sistant Recording Secretary to fill a vacancy caused by tho res ignation of S. J. Billman, who had been elected Treasurer. Tho meeting was largely attended, and at tho special meeting to-night the White and Blue degrees will bo worked, and those who are entitled to receive one or both of these degrees should present themselves at tho lodge room by 8 o'clock. Tomorrow night tho Uniform Rank will complete their organization, and every person who is on the application for a

A. T. Hicks has a big snake tale to toll, lie say tho snake was nine feet long and was in a shock of wheat.

A Statement Prom Oapt. A. E, Kay -A ',/•. Oase of Dog Tray. To tin: KilltorTlio Journal.
WAYNBTOWN, July 27. —I want to say for the boys of my company that tliev feel you bavo grossly misrepresented them and have treated them most unfairly in not giving them the space they asked for in which to reply to your charges. When tho matter was called to my attention at Camp Ilovoy by Col McKoe at Adjt. Ruckle's instance I inado a full statement of the facts as they occurred which, of course, were accepted. Being set right before my superior officer I had concluded to say nothing more for niyselt but gave the boys ]ermission to make what reply seemed necessary bv them in the case, cautioning them to make simply plain statement of facts for publication in your paper. This, I am sorry to say, you failed to do for them, leaving out tho mam part of their reply and reiterating the charge as to more than two as my company being engaged in tho row of Sunday afternoon. That was simply impossible for none of my men except Horron and Karsner were in your city until nine o'clock, when -we passed quietly through to tho
Yandalia depot, formed there, took possession of tho car assigned to UB by tho agent nnd were then excused until 10 o'clock. Not a man of my command was intoxicated nor had any trouble from tho time we reached your city until wo left.
Ilerron and Karsner were in Crawfordsvillo in disobedience of my orders for which I punished them as far as I could at that time. If thoy needed a thirty days' jail sentence as you say in your paper, that was in the power of your city government if you have any and would have met with no complaints from mo had it been imposed.
I have no wish to shield the two mentioned from any amount of csnsuro anil from whatever source it may come but I do object, emphatically, to liavo Company II "as a unit" classed among the roughs and toughs. Among our members are Montgomery county's representative in the State Legislature. We have two S. S. Superintendents. We have two common school teachers of high standing and more than two-thirds of the company are consistent Christian gentlemen and members of tho various churches.
Of courso wo have boys who are dispotod to be rudo lint no more than any other company in the Legion. Our record at Camp Ilovoy were tho best in tho regiment, but one man having missed a roll call or duty of any kind
I can not think that if you realize tho mischief your report has caused. All tho Indianapolis papers had it and it is duo tho Company that tho matter be made right in a statement of the actual facts which you are surely aware of.
Respectfully, R. E. RAY, Capt. Co. II.

Exilod Athenian Sluggers Show Michigan Oity Points In Boxing.
Everybody is awnro of the fact that a majority of our local prize fighters aro sojourning in Michigan City basking in the sunny smiles of Ed Cory "tho noblest Roman of thom all." Ed Cory, Joo Allen, Chuekoy Fell and "Bony" Harris, all Athenian products, took part. in an ontertainmont of a very elevating character the otlior evening in Michigan City of which the Michigan City -Yen's has the following to say:
Ed Corey's athlctic ontertninment ai Morzart ifall Saturday evening proved a success as an entertainment, but after tho oxponsos wore paid thoro was not much money left for tho projectors. Tho various other attractions no doubt accounted for the comparatively Btnnll attendance. Tho advertised programme was rendered in detail and proved very interesting. Ed Corey, champion heavyweight of Indiana, nnd Roddy Fell, who fought Corey at Waynotown last February. were next introduced and engaged in a lively threo-rouna sparring exhibition, in which both mi'tie a good showing. Tho next contest was threeround set-to between Joo Harris, champion light-weight of Ind ma, at"'" Qeor burham, Michigan liffht-" oi&jt champion. CiiAwroiiDsviLLr, Ind.. duly 29.---T tho Editor of .ToriiXAi.—1)EAH Silt:— see in yesterday's edition an article headed "Luther's Sunday Clothes, which stated that I refuse to pay to Constable John livers tho cost of the suit which I had with tho landlord of the Robbins House for wages which was justly duo me. I will state to the readers of TIIE JOURNAL that so far as my refusing to pay tho cost of tho court, is a mistake. I have never refused to pay tho cost and if the Rev. John Byers ha." of beeu man enough to present his bill I would of paid it without any controversy. But no, he has never boon the mnn to ask 1110 for a cent. Tho Rev. John Byors (some may think 1 call him reverend for contempt but such is not tho case, ho is a learned preacher) has held me in contempt for some time and simply because his wife, Mrs. Sno Byers has not charge of the organ at the Baptist church and as all ignorant men will do ho is doing his best to pull mo down in tho estimation of the public. I state again that 1 have never refused to pay him and had paid a part of it to Justice Chunierso when ho levied on my clothes, v- L. R. MONIIOU.
