DAILY JOURNAL.

THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1891.

THE DAILY JOUHNAI. is for sale by Robinson & Wallace.

Not Caused By Beer.

Tlio Lafayette Journal consumed a column ouo day this week describing tho triiBtful and cooing relationship lhat it alleges exists between Lafayette and Crawfordsvillo, and says the reason for this intimacy is nnkuown—a problem that no ono has yet solved. Probably the brand of beer used in tho two cities is the same.—Delphi Journal.

This is hardly truo, as Delphi uses tho samo brand and more of it than either city too, but for all that isn't in tho Hwini.

Heading This Way.

Barnum & Bailey's advertising car number 2 is in tho yards hero to-day and tho town is being re-billed for the groat show, the only show, tho greatest show on earth and "tho on iy show that visits on lirst-elitss towns. This mighty "SSreS"t,'l,n will bo in Kokotno in all its gorgeous and bowildering vastnoss Tuesday, August 11. Poor old Anderson this 'most breaks her heart. A. F. Hamilton, tlio press agent, is also hore contracting for newspaper advertising.—Koktimo Gaztite-Tribulie.

Tho show is evidently lioading this way and its about tinto as it has been billed since May 1. Albert Miller is the only man in town who knows the dato, and ho is as mum as a Democrat on tho price of sugar.

Oaged for Fourteen Days. •, esterday afternoon a trntnp, named •Iohn Prince, was seen hanging around tho pards of tlio Indiana Lumber Company. About o'clock he made an indecent exposure of his jjerson to the little girls of Dan McNorny and John lvellev, following them about the yard and attempting to entice them to a secluded spot. He was observed by tho men working in tho yard who had him placed under arrest. This morning Prince was brought before Mayor Carr •i.nd entered a plea of not guilty. He was convicted, however, upon the testimony of Charles Barnard, and fined $14.50. Being nnablo to pay, he was sent to jail to lay it out. While the Mayor was figuring up the lino Prince and Barnard passed the compliments of tie season and proceeded to roast each other to the admiration and delight of a select ard appreciative audience.

Give Us aNew Station, Sumner. The Monon has a new superintendent, Sumner J. Collins having been appointed yesterday. Those who know him personally state that he is one of tho most competent railroad men in the country. Commencing railroading in his boyhood, for several years he was division superintendent on the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul, and it is considered a very fortunate thing that tho Monon has secured his services, as tho business of the road is now very heavy, taxing the rolling stock to its utmost capacity, and for the next few months is likely to be heavier rather than lighter. Last Saturday there was tho largest movemont or loaded cars on the Louisville, N\w Albany & Chicago system in the history of tho road. Tho earnings of the road from January 1 to July 7 are 8110,000 ahead of those of the oorresjwnding period last year. Tho passenger as well as the freight earnings are running far ahead of last year.—Lofiujeitn Courier.

Sumnor J. is probably all right and the road is undoubtedly doing a land office business, but neithor Sumner nor tho road will bo idolized around here until tho old death trap, ealled a station, is removed and something decent substituted.

yl AE8ENIG AND AMMONIA.

Remarkable Contrast in tlie Effect of Two Poisons on the Complexion. Tho slow absorption of many poisons changes in some more or less modified form tho complexion, but arsenic and ammonia show their effect about as quickly as any. Tho popular belief that arsenic clears tho complexion has led many silly women to kill themselves with it in small continued doses.

It produces waxy, ivory-like appearance of the skin during a certain stage of tho poisoning, but its torriblo after effects have bocomo too well known to mako it of common use as a cosmetic.

Tho effect of ammonia upon the complexion are directly the opposite to that of arsenic. The first sympton of ammonia poisoning which appears among those who work in mmonia factories is a discoloration of tho skin of the nose and the forehead. This gradually extends over tho face until tho complexion has a stained blotched, and unsightly appearance. With people who take ammonia into their systems in smaller doses, as with their water or food, these striking symptoms do not appear so soon. Tho only effect of lhopoi6on that is visible for a time is a general unwholcsomeness and sallownesH of the complexion.

Many people are slowly absorbing ammonia poison without knowing it. Tho use of ammonia in tho manufactures has grently increased of late, and it is unquestionably used as an adulterant in certain food preparations. Official analysis have plainly showed its use oven in such cheap articles of every day consumption as baking powders. Tho continued absorption of ammonia in even minute quantities us an adulterant in food is injurous not merely from its effect upon the complexion, but because it destroys tho coating of tho stomach and causes dyspepsia and kindred ovils.

Professor Long, of Chicago, is authority for tho statement that, if to fifty million parts of water there is ono part of ammonia, tho water iB dangerous.

A NEW DEPASTURE.

Organization of the "Crawfordsvillo Commandery, Patriotic Guard,P.0.S,of A." Tho members of tho Patriotic Order Sons of America met at their hall last evening and completed tho organization of the Uniform Rank. The meeting was called to order by Hubert Wilhite, and after the selection of a chairman and secretary tho regular business was taken up. The following officers were then chosen:

The First Sorgeant will also act as Recording and Financial Secretary, and the Second Sorgeant as Treasurer. Ohuckey Fell in the Swim.

Corey's athletic entertainment at Mozart hall, Saturday evening, promises to draw a large crowd. Largo hangers have been posted iu tho store windows advertising the affair. Among the features will be a friendly spurring contest for scientific points between Ed Corey and Roddy Fell. Corey and Fell fought at Wftynetown last winter. Both were arrested, and it was at their trial that the judge rendered his famous decision that prize fighters could not be prosecuted under the present laws of Indiana. Fell is a very clever boxor and they will certainly give an interesting exhibition. Coroy will also give on exhibition of punching tho bag and show other methods employed by pugilists in training. He will also wrestle a catch-as catch-can-match with Don. C.Walkeriez. Corey bus never been seen in this role in this city, but iB said to be a very olover wrestler.—Michigan City A'exes.

These men stand convicted before the low of the torriblo crime of effecting a forcible entrance into the old warehouse at Waynetown. Their attorneys in the vain hoj)e of saving their characters boldly battled (and enssed) for two long days loforo Just ice RaniBey, but to-day the drend decree was given and tho guilty men withered with tho agony of romoreo when tho torriblo truth was lxme home to them.
