MORE STREETS.

The Council Still Keeps Up Its Record aa a Wide Awake Progressive Body. The Council met last night with the fall quota of six present. Tho Board of Public Improvements :nade a verbal report to tho effect that the frog pond on east Main street was boing destroyed as rapidly as possible and that several new street crossings had been put. in. In regard to tho alley back of Green street between Main and Market, Mr. Reynolds said he wns in favor of getting out affidavits against all tho property holders along the line for maintaining a nuisanco as being tho only way to get, at" tho matter. Vanarsdall suggested that tho restaurant proprietors be compelled to put their Blop in a barrel and have it hauled. He didn't see how the filth could be made to run through a sower anyway. Mr. Smith spoke in bohalf of the property holders Baying they willing to pay for any improvement if the Council would order it.

Later in tho evening the engineer reported tho plans and expense of improving tho alley anU it was referred to the Board of Pnblic Improvement with power to act. Tho Police Board had no roport. The Judiciary Committee reported that tho Knickerbocker Trust Company had acknowledged the receipt of $5,119, but objected to getting it through Manager Sheotz any more. This is not a rcllection on Mr. Sheotz at all but only a notice that tho Trust Company prefers to receive its pay direct from the city. The amount paid settles all water and light bills up to Juno 80. Before paying the monoy John S. Brown gavo tho city an indemnifying bond for tho full amount.

The Committee on Petitions arid Overtures asked further time on the petitions concerning Wabash avenue and Mill street.

Tho Committee on Schools and Public Buildings asked more timo in tho matter of romov'ng the work house from the jail to the city's lot on Washington street.

Tho Committee on accounts reported favorably on a number of bills which wore allowed.

S. C. Kennedy was present and presented a numerously signed petition asking that a fire hydrant bo established on west Wabash avenue at tho corporation lino. The object, he stated, was not only to furnish fire protection but to enable tho citizens beyond Blair street to get water for springling purposes. The Water and Light Company had refused to extend-their mains although between eeven and ten persons wanted water in a dislnr.eo of 540 feet. Tho Council ordered tho hydrant established in accordance with tho prayers of tho petitioners, and referred tha mattor to the Water Works Committee to havo the work done.

A plat 80x20 feet on Washington street next to the new electric light plant has been vacated in order that it might be used by the city for tho plant.

The matter of opening Gibson street was referred to the City Commissioners who will assess benefits and damages. The proposition of Joseph Milligan to donate part of th£ land for this street and the proposition of Frank Maxwell to donate land in front of his property and do the graveling were both rejected.

The matter of opening Haw street from Mill street through to the Junction was reported favorably by the committee and tho report concurred in by a unanimous vote of the council. The city commissioners were ordered to assess benefits and damages. In the discussion of this report on Haw street some very interesting facts were developed. It was told that now there was no access to the Junction except through private property, which might be closed at ony time. There are some very hoavy tax payers who own property along tho lino of the new street and they are all heartily in favor of it. Thoro are also some citizens on tho street who aro in very poor circumstances, who were at first opposed to the street but who are now warmly in favor of it. There is now a great deal of transferring done at tho Junction both by tho express company and the U. S nxr. department which is liable to increase insitoad of diminishing. All of thoso things, together with the fact that some of our moBt important factories are locatetl-beyond tho Junction, make the opening of Haw street eminontly proper.

Tt was also decided to open another street, (to be named later,) across from Haw street to Indiana avenue just back of the Consolidated Tank Lino Company's building. This company offers tho right of way through its land freeThis stioet will open up tho way direct to the spoke factory and the wire fonce factory. Fire hydrants will also bo established on these new streets giving ample protection to the factories, a thing they have not had heretofore.

Tho City Treasurer reported a balance on hand of 841,41 G.99.

Mr. Smith suggested that Haw, Fremont and Perry-streets, being all in the same lino although disconnected should all have the same name, and said that someone had manufactured a name out of all three of them, Harmony.

A five foot gutter was ordered on the

south sido of west Main street from Grant avenue west to Marshall. The Board of Public* Improvements was ordered to rush the abutments of the Colloge street bridge through. The County Commissioners have agreed to build a bridge from 90 to 100 feet long. Tho gutter in front of tho Miller block is to bo improved. The mud hole in front of Dickerson's grocery on College street is to be fixed. A tile was ordered at the orossing of Spring and Walnut streets. Bids for printing were received from THE JOURNAL, the Argns-Netcs and the Reviexo. They were referred to the committee on Printing and Stationery.

Mr. Smith said that in Muncie they were substituting a fiat stone about two and a half feet wide for boulders in gutters and suggested that the stom be tried on the east Wabash avenue improvement. The stones aro less expensive than boulders and much more handsome and substantial.

Exchanged Trunks,

Otis Miller and wife returned yosterday from a weok's visit in Crawfordsville and Covington and their trip from Crawfordsville wns attended with an interesting experience with their baggage. The baggage assaulter at the Hoosier Athens checked Mr. Miller's trunk to Chicago and Miss Mary Hannah Krout's trunk to Lafayotte. AVhon tho train arrived at tho Lahr House Mr. Miller was surprised to loam that Miss Krout's trunk had been thrown off for him. Ho ran into the tickot oflico, telephoned to the Salem street depot and induced the agent thoro to hold tho trnin until the mistake was corrected. Miss Krout was disturbed from her quiet repoeo in the parlor car long enough to exchange checks. Mr. Miller says that it would have been a terrible misfit of clothing had the error not been found out. Miss Krout is tho talented special contributor to the Chicago Inter-Ocean, and she was on her way from Crawfordsville where her relatives reside. She was formerly connected with the Crawford&ville JOURNAL. During tho Harrison campaign she took care of the Indiana politics for the Inter-Ocean.—Lafayette Courier.

Union Still ELicfcinsr.

The Board of lieview sat in session to-day still hearing tho dreary wails on the assessment from the good people of Union township. A largo number appeared before tho Board to-day and unburdened their grievances in a way which did their hearts good. It is thought that the Board will not act upon all tho suggestions offered by the tax payers, but a number of them showed to their of thinking that the assessor had popped it to them rather hard.
