"Yes, you see it's this way. When I I brought my horse down here the streets were dark as pitch. Couldn't get tlie town to light 'em. Tried every way I knew how. "How about the horse, though?" "Well. I'm coming to that. This is nil awful bad road, isn't it? My friend, the councilman, doesn't own a horse. He too mean to buy one. pickles,-and he finds they are very generally adulterated with poisonous substances which render their use not only unwholesome, but absolutely dangerous. We quote as follows from Dr. Jackson's report of his investigations: "Salicylic acid is almost universally used by tomato-catsup manufacturers for the purpose of cheaply preserving the catsup from fermentation. The manufacturer also uses it to preserve the large quantities of tomatoes which which he buys when cheapest, in a sort of tnash or pulp. Salicylic acid is injurious when taken in more than very small doses not frequently repeated, as it causes emancipation or wasting of the tissues. "The coloring matter—aniline red— as a matter of fact, often contains arsenic. How any one can imagine that tomatoes could give such a color to catsup as is possessed by this article, it is difficult to conceive. It must be remembered that arsenic is not to be trifled with, and that, like all metals, it accumulates in the system. "Ten samples of domestic and foreign pickles were examined, with the result of finding impurities and adulteration in thirty-two per cent. Copper was present in two samples, sulphuric acid

Vickies of a vivid green eolor invariably contain copper. It is still a common practice with many housewives to 'green' their pickles by allowing them, with their vinegar, to stand in brass or copper kettles for twenty-four hours or more and it is also advised in some cook-books to place a few pennies in the pot while cooking the pickles. How it is that any one should be so ignorant as to do these things, it is difficult to conceive: yet it is done. Many cases, some fatal, of poisoning from eating pickles colored with copper, have .been reported."— Good Health.
How S|»onye« Are Captured. The sponge is simply marine animal. and it grows in the sen, just as an oyster or clam prows. The best sponges arc cuught otT the Florida coast. The work of catching sponges is a regular industry. Men go out in boats with long spears and hooks. The sponge catchers wear box-like oblong g-lasses that fit over the face and around the front part of the head. There are magnifying arrangements in these boxes, and the glasses nre made to enable the wearer to see through the water. Whenever sponge is descried from the surfaao of the water the catcher thrusts down his spear and hooks up the flabby mass. There is a good deal of work necessary on Bponge before it Is roady for the market, and in the proeestes of preparation there is much adulteration Sponge is sold in wholesale by pound, and very often the material weighed with s'aud, glycerine and other things to increase it* value.—St Louis Globe-Democrat.
