TAXES.
While there is ft fine array of kicking going on about the increase of assessments, there is one case which calls for a modification, That is tho case of the Agricultural Association property. Tnis institution is a public benefaction not only to this county, but the surrounding counties and should be dealt with accordingly. In reality the fair' property should be exempt from taxation because the Association has ever labored for the interests of this county. Objections might be raised because this is a private institution and exempting them from taxation would be considered partiality, but it shoulu be remembered that the individual members went into this affair at a risk without expecting returns, and in fact have not received anything for their risk, not to say anything about their true devotion. Let justice bo done.
TARIFF PICTURE.
The "reformer" wants to know what benefit the McICinley tariff has been to wool growers. Well it has so stimulated domestic wool manufacturing by reducing our imports of woolen goods for the first seven months it has been in force from S28,723,201

for the corresponding period last year, that the increased demand for domestic wool has kept the price nearlyjnp to its last year's figures, although Australian wool has declined in tho world's market from an average prico of S72.83

ARGENTINE'S paper money is worth only about 20 cents on the dollar as compared with gold. This is afar lower level than greenbacks ever touched in the darkest days of the civil war in the United States. But even in a period of peace wo could readily reduce the value of our circulating medium. If we follow the advice of the third-party men, and adopt the land currency whioj^ VimC organization favors, an'l w'-:j,jh'is similar to that largely ir in Argentine, thfe thine Vii'i -oo done.—St. Louis Globe1/cmocrat.
ALL the money tho farmer can hope to secure must xmie from tho sale of surplus crops. No matter where the market for these is found, he either must take what ho sells to that market or pay someone else for doing so. The nearer to his farm such market can be found the less the expense in reaching it. Hence tho one item of transportation really settles the question of economy in favor of tho home market. It is hardly necessary to add that protection builds up the home market.

Ho was born in Philadelphia, Nov. 3, 1831, received a common school education, studied law and went to Minnesota, where he was elected lieutenant governor in 1859 and 1881, and then went to congress, serving there from December, 1863, to March, 1869. Since then he has been active in literature, being famous for his "Ragnarok," "Atlantis," and work on Shakespeare. How Personal Conceit Distorts Charms of Nature.
The big head is no longer monopolized by theatrical stars It has broken out, says tho New York World, if ono may say so, in polite society, and the least of us may be afllictcd by cranial enlargement. It did not seem possible that tho big head could be contagious, but in these days of imitation it has been proved otherwise, and more than one of your acquaintances will bo found suffering from it. Tho society woman who has achieved some local success is the first to find her acquaintances observing this capital change they say nothing to her, of course, but they look unutterable things when she betrays herself and lior now solf-importanco. Very youthful persons, whom the world in which they move has kindly noticed, will carry round oe their sh.nddera a head out of all proportions with their moral size but they go unchallenged, because big head is now so prevalent that as a monstrosity it would prove a drug in the dime, museum line. To believe in one's self, to determine to win tho race, really to bo somebody, is all praiseworthy in the extreme, but the instant these noble endeavors fly to tho head all is lost. The head swells, and when that misfortune occurs all the symmetry of individuality vanishes, and a disagreeable personal conceit comes to distort tho sweetest natural charms. Modesty is a rare quality iu the present day. There seems to bo no room for its cultivation. Apparently, nobody has any use for modesty, and only blatant self-sufiiciency, with the inevitable result, big head, now has the floor.

One Kats KffK*. Shell and JA11, and tha Other Crunches ilouei.
There was an account recently given hero of a man who crunches tho shells of the boiled eggs that he takes at breakfast, says the New York Sun. There is another man in town who eats bones, and who is known among'his friends as tho "great American bone eater." He is a scientist, and when question was put to him he said: "I do not follow this habit for any fantastic reuson. I believe that the organic chemical elements found in bones, such as phosphate and carbonate of lime, are greatly needed in the human frame for the development of the osseous system. I do not make a dinner of bones, but merely taking a liulo bono delicacy at times, when not in company. I will go through the rib bones of a spring chicken or quail, or what not. I will have the grilled leg bones of a young chicken, which are easily eaten when well grilled, and are very nice. Then there are the grilled bones of a sucking pig, or of a lamb, and, in fact, thoro are sundry bones that can be propared iji various ways to the advantage of the eater. I have had benefit from one eating, and I know several bono eaters. Some of the African negroes, who are very strong, eat the bones of game after making them erisp at the fire, and the books tell of the bone caters of Europe in olden times. 1 would advise you jet a. few dainty bones in nice order
